Melbourne, Australia – 17th April 2016: Atomos invented the all-in-one monitor recorder category and now redefine it with the Shogun Inferno. It is the combination of the most advanced monitor technologies – 1500nit/10bit/HDR, the latest recording capability – 4Kp60 over Quad-SDI, along with playback & editing functionality that encourages on set collaboration. Shogun Inferno makes mastering a high resolution, high frame rate, high dynamic range workflow available to all filmmakers.
Shogun Inferno sits as the flagship model in the new 8-strong Atomos HDR line-up which has expanded to include HDR as a free update to the Blade HD series, Ninja Assassin, Shogun and Shogun Studio along with the recently announced Flame series.
Shogun Inferno has all of the premium monitoring features previously announced on the Shogun Flame i.e. 10 stops of dynamic range with AtomHDR, 1500nit brightness for outdoor monitoring & 10-bit processing for smooth color transitions.
- AtomHDR; AtomHDR lets you shoot with the high brightness range of your camera’s Log profile and previewthe final, vibrant post production HDR result.
- 4K 60p; Record and play out pristine ProRes/ DNxHR in 4K resolution and 24/25/30/50/60p frame rates.
- HD 240p; Apart from 4K recording, high frame rate HD from 50p to 240p can be recorded from cameras thatoutput these high frame rates.
- Quad SDI; The Quad SDI inputs let you connect from cameras with 1.5/3/6/12G SDI outputs without the needfor converters.
- Raw recording; Capture the RAW output from Sony FS7/ FS700 and Canon C300MKII/C500 over SDI,recording to either ProRes, DNxHR or CDNG.
- 10-bit monitor; 10-bit monitor processing increases the number of colors from 16.7 million for standard 8-bitpanels to 1.07 billion, minimizing color banding on screen.
- 7” 1500nit brightness; For Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) shooting ramp the brightness slider up to 1500 nitfor hood-free outdoor monitoring.
- Apple ProRes & AVID DNxHR recording; Record to visually lossless Apple ProRes or AVID DNxHD in Rec709or Log formats as an edit friendly, visually lossless industry benchmark independent of the camera brand used.
- PQ in/out; Take PQ out into larger HDR compatible screens or feed HDR from your NLE into the PQ input forHDR grading using the Inferno.
- Custom looks; Apply a custom look to footage by uploading and applying “.cube” 3D LUT’s. View in full/halfmode on screen, output it to a monitor or record into the footage.

Impressive. This meets or exceeds the Odyssey 7Q+ in a number of areas. Finally, a full HD screen. And it does 4k/60p from HDMI.
I notice the Shogun Inferno claims to support 240 fps in HD. But other than the Sony FS series (FS700, FS5, and FS7) which can output 240 fps as a RAW signal (in 1080p or 2K modes), are there any other cameras that can output these higher frame rates?
Are there cameras that can output 240 or even 120 fps as an uncompressed signal over HDMI or SDI?
Even cameras like the Sony a7S II which can record 1080p120 internally can't output that signal over HDMI.
@davedv , I take it you need hdmi 2.0 protocol for the bandwidth for these high frame rate modes, we will probably see hdmi 2.0 on the new cameras in the second half of this year Is my prediction
Yeah, I think HDMI 2.0 is probably needed for 240 fps, although 120 fps may be possible with HDMI 1.4b.
But some cameras have HDMI 2.0 ports already (cameras that support 4k at 60fps need HDMI 2.0 to be able to output that resolution and frame rate). For example, both the Sony FS7 and Panasonic DVX200 have HDMI 2.0 ports. And while both of these cameras can record at 1080p120 internally, I'm not sure that either camera can output 120 fps over HDMI.
I looked at the specs on the Atomos site as the Inferno is a pretty interesting product. I was waiting to see if the regular shogun would get RAW high frame rate as an update as the Odessey 7q's sub HD screen, and additional $1k for raw. Now while the inferno looks great, the 7Q can beat it with 4k 120fps burst and record 2k raw up to 240fps because of its ability to raid drives. The 7Q's HDMI is 1.4a only and I don't know how the 1500nit high bright screen on the Inferno will compare to the OLED on the 7Q so one can only wait till we can actually see some side by side comparisons or try one out.
From the Atomos site, https://www.atomos.com/inferno/:
Supported Codecs & frame rates (record & playback)
====
Raw to CDNG (Record only)*
Codecs Cinema DNG for supported cameras (Sony FS5/FS7/ FS700, Canon C300MKII, C500, Panasonic Varicam RAW*)
AVID DNxHR HQX. HQ, SQ, LB
Frame rates 4K DCI / 4K UHD; 24/25/30/50/60p
The Odyssey 7Q can record 4K 120fps RAW bursts from the Sony FS700 and FS5 using a 3G SDI input. The reason this works is because the cameras have an internal memory buffer for the frames (which is also why it is a time-limited burst). Once the memory buffer is full, the camera plays out the frames at a slower frame rate (24 to 60 fps).
It's possible that this may end up working on the Shogun Inferno at some point as well, although historically the Odyssey has had the best support for the Sony FS cameras.
In terms availability expectations:
1) The original Shogun was announced in April 2014 at NAB with an expected ship date of October: https://www.atomos.com/wp-content/themes/atomos/PDFs/Atomos_Launch_Shogun_at_NAB_2014.pdf If I remember correctly, it didn't actually start shipping until the very end of December 2014
2) The Atomos Power Station was announced in September 2014 at IBC and started shipping in May 2015.
3) The Atomos Ninja Star was announced in April 2014 and started shipping in July 2014.
So they have had some delays in the past, although not quite to the same extent as Blackmagic. With the Shogun Flame and Ninja Flame, for example, they were announced in mid-March and available a couple of weeks after that.

Hi guy, how would you judge the loudness of the fans? Mine starts off pretty quiet but the raises the fan noise to very loud level after around 8 min of recording. That makes the atomos unusable for quiet scenes, even a few meters away good mics will catch that fan noise. Do you have the same issue?
Melbourne, Australia – 9 April 2018 – ProRes RAW is available today for Atomos recorders, delivering a powerful new RAW workflow when combined with Final Cut Pro 10.4.1. Simply install the free AtomOS 9 upgrade on the Atomos Shogun Inferno or Sumo19 monitor/recorders, connect to one of the nine supported cinema cameras, and begin recording in ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ.
Users can immediately enjoy the benefits of the amazing new RAW end-to-end workflow that combines the incredible performance of ProRes with the flexibility of RAW. Atomos devices are the only monitor recorders to offer ProRes RAW, with pristine recording direct from the sensor output of Panasonic, Sony and Canon cinema cameras.
The response to ProRes RAW from the creative community has been incredible:
“The hills are alive with the sound of ProRes RAW, and Atomos has heard it….Apple has a new format, and it’s everybody’s darling. The malleable nature of RAW and the beauty and (and necessity of) ProRes are together at long last, and Atomos has you covered.”
“This announcement is a big deal. ProRes has been an industry standard codec since its inception back in 2007, now 11 years later Apple is looking to position ProRes again as the go-to codec.”
“Apple has unveiled a new video recording codec called ProRes RAW, a move that instantly makes the high-quality format more mainstream...Atomos' Shogun Inferno and Sumo 19 recorders, meanwhile, will be the first to offer RAW recording for cameras from Panasonic, Sony, Canon and others.”
Come and see for yourself how Atomos is unlocking creativity at the NAB show, booth C9425 and at the 17th Annual Las Vegas SuperMeet on Tuesday 10th of April. There will be product demos, as well as the opportunity to get hands on with the gear and workflow with both companies.
