    At 1.0 inch, the image sensor on the PowerShot G9 X camera is larger than the ones on most other compact cameras. This allows it to capture a greater range of light, so bright areas of the image, like clouds on a sunny day, can be more detailed and less likely to be washed or blown out. With low-light scenes, like when you’re indoors or outside at night, an ISO range of 125–12800 lets you use fast shutter speeds to help keep photos sharp and virtually unaffected by camera shake.     The PowerShot G9 X camera has an impressive zoom lens with a remarkable optical zoom range, helping you capture wide shots like a big party scene or a gorgeous canyon, or enabling you to zoom in and get a wonderful close-up. The fast aperture goes as low as f/2.0, meaning it’s possible to see the subject and take clear photos in low light, often without a flash. Combined with Intelligent IS image stabilization, it helps to ensure virtually shake-free images, even in dark rooms or outside at night.

    At only 7.37 ounces (209g), the PowerShot G9 X is a compact camera that’s not much bigger than a deck of cards, and can easily fit into a pocket or purse. These work together with features such as the DIGIC 6 processor to help create high quality photos, even in low light.     The 3.0-inch touch panel is designed to take advantage of both hands while holding the camera so you can make adjustments while still being ready to snap a photo. The menus are customizable, meaning the settings you adjust frequently are easily accessible. For example, if you’re trying to capture a dog playing in the sun, you can quickly adjust the shutter speed with a tap of the menu and a twist of the control ring to get the amount of detail you desire, while keeping a bit of blur to show action.

Featuring high-quality optics and large one-inch image sensors, both new models are ideal for advanced amateur photographers looking for a highly portable, advanced point-and-shoot camera equipped with built-in Wi-Fi®* and NFC** capability for easy sharing of images and video to social media networks as well as printing to compatible Canon PIXMA or SELPHY printers with the PIXMA Printing Solutions app†.

    Both new models feature a one-inch, 20.2 Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor that delivers optimal performance with an ISO range of 125 – 12,800. The sensor, along with a proprietary DIGIC 6 Image processor, creates Canon’s HS System to provide photographers with vivid and detailed still images and video, even in difficult low-light shooting scenarios.

    The PowerShot G9 X

    Slim and lightweight, the PowerShot G9 X is the camera photographers will want to show off to their friends as much as they shoot with it. The camera features a bright f/2.0 - f/4.9, 3x Canon Optical Zoom Lens (focal length range equivalent to 28-84mm) along with Canon’s Intelligent Image Stabilization (IS) system for virtually shake-free images in a wide variety of shooting conditions.

    The camera’s intuitive three-inch LCD touch panel with a new user interface allows for quick and easy changes to camera settings even while taking pictures. In addition to the touch panel, a lens-mounted control ring can be utilized to adjust several functions, including customizable manual focus. For shooting fast-moving subjects from kids at birthday parties to athletic events, the PowerShot G9 X camera has continuous shooting speeds up to six frames per second (fps) so none of the action is missed. It is available in classic black, or in a retro-style, silver-gray body with brown stitched leather accents.

    Shared Features

    The PowerShot G5 X and PowerShot G9 X models both feature three convenient ways to charge the NB-13L lithium-ion battery pack: (1) via an optional USB cable connected to a powered USB socket to charge the battery while it is still in the camera body, (2) via an optional USB-connected AC Adapter to charge the battery while it is still in the camera body, and (3) via the standalone external battery charger that is supplied with both cameras as standard equipment.

    Both new PowerShot models incorporate a broad range of exposure modes from fully automatic to full manual, and both offer users the choice of RAW as well as JPEG recording modes for still photos. Additionally, both new models incorporate a built-in ND filter for enhanced exposure control in bright shooting conditions.

    Price and Availability

    The PowerShot G5 X and PowerShot G9 X camera kits are scheduled to begin shipping in November 2015 at suggested retail prices of $799.99 and $529.99, respectively.

    The G9 X appears to be the lightest and most compact of cameras with one-inch type (13.2 x 8.8 mm) sensors currently available. Its nearest rival is the Sony RX100 Mark III, which measures 101.6 x 58.1 x 41 mm and weighs 290 grams with battery and card.

    The Canon Powershot G9 X is a compact and stylish digital camera that is designed to be small and pocketable whilst still delivering excellent image quality. Thankfully this is something the G9 X is highly capable of, with bright colorful images that pack in plenty of detail. Whilst compromises have been made in order to make the camera as small as it is, with only a 3x optical zoom lens, this is something we would be prepared to live with, as it lets the camera fit easily into pockets.

    Image quality is great - as expected - but the overall experience suffers a little in comparison with the G7 X as the lens has a wider overall aperture range. If therefore you find yourself often shooting in low light situations, then the G7 X may be a better option.

    The PowerShot G9X carves its own niche within this busy range though by being the smallest. Smaller in every dimension than the G7X and RX100 series, not to mention lighter too, the G9X is the most pocketable conventionally-designed compact with a 1in sensor - impressively it's roughly similar in size to Canon's own S120, despite packing a sensor with 2.8 times the surface area. Sure you can just about squash a G7X or RX100 into a trouser pocket, but the G9X slips-in much more gracefully and its lighter weight won't drag-down a shirt pocket either.

    Recording video is as easy as ever thanks to the dedicated video recording button. Once pressed, the camera will start recording video in any shooting mode, so you are always ready. The camera is able to record at Full 1080p HD at either 30fps or 60fps, 720p HD, and VGA resolutions. We are a little surprised at the lack of a 4K video mode, which is becoming much more popular on mid-to-high level compacts. Our samples show a well exposed and very smooth playing video at both 30fps and 60fps. They can easily be played back by downloading the videos to a computer or by playing them on the camera itself. With an optional HDMI cable, the videos and still images can be viewed on any HDTV and controlled by the camera. The camera also did very well with the audio, capturing all of the sounds closest to the camera with very little unwanted noise. With that being said, there was no wind while we were shooting. When using the optical zoom while recording you will notice the very loud clicking noise as the lens moves. This is something that you cannot avoid if you are going to zoom, but keep this in mind if you are looking for the best audio possible while shooting video.

    There are a whole lot of pages in the Canon G9X's menu system -- by my count, around 20 of them in total. Yet each has a rather non-descriptive name shown at top right of the screen, for example "SHOOT1", "SHOOT2", etc. Some of these pages disappear in certain operating modes, and the menu items on a given screen vary from mode to mode. Many of them also have fewer menu items than would fill the screen.

    The Canon G9X is an altogether better camera than was the G7X, and it presents a much stronger challenge to the best offerings from rivals. Especially with the inclusion of a really easy-to-use Wi-Fi mode that gets your photos onto your smartphone in short order.
