Straight trade in? Seems interesting
Thousands gather at Hollywood and Highland Centre for their Samsung trade-in cameras. When Samsung runs out, they'll trash the joint!
When visiting Hollywood & Highland, step into a piece of history. With its unique ties to Tinseltown, the Center’s architecture references the epic 1916 movie set of D.W. Griffith’s famed and fabled masterpiece, Intolerance. Based on the Babylon set of the classic silent-film, Hollywood & Highland brings to life an important piece of cinematographic history, which became a notable landmark during Hollywood’s golden era before being torn down in 1919.

Must've been an interesting sight to see a bunch of tourists lining up to trade in their cameras, hopefully they all remembered to take out their memory cards full of vacation pics.
Do these trade-in promos really help sell more of a product? When Microsoft did a similar promo, Surface tablet for a Macbook Air, people were saying that MS couldn't sell them, so they were basically giving them away. Seems like this kind of promo only helps to seed the idea that the product is somehow inferior. With that said, I'd be all for Panasonic pulling a similar promo - I've got an older model Canon that I'd swap for a GH4.

Microsoft is facing media war (plus their own issues with pricing and marketing, of course). Media get direct instructions that they can't allow now third alternative, it is too much for now, hence all the proper coverage.
So, if I had for example traded in a Rebel t2i - what would I have paid to get a Samsung NX1 (that's the good one right?) Hard to tell anything about these to be honest...
They probably make their money back selling you replacement batteries, lenses, etc. Plus, having more Samsung cameras in the street is great publicity! Makes DSLRs look like old news. So far, no similar offer on the Samsung killer robots!
