Earth is just lump of dirt with a very tiny, thin skin of biological activity on its surface. One smallish asteroid...comet...super volcano...crop disease...and most aspects of our species is gone - except a few with ammo and food/fuel stockpiles, perhaps. Never to rise again (no easy resources).
