The fast f/1.7 maximum aperture and associated depth-of-field control are the key features that will attract buyers of this lens since its modest wide-angle coverage is included in all popular kit lenses. Aside from that, the excellent build quality and well-designed external controls will be welcomed by serious photographers.

The color and contrast give the images a look similar to the Panasonic Leica 25mm f/1.4, which is fairly high praise in my opinion. All of this is packaged in a tightly assembled great looking and tiny package.

Short test of the lens on the GH4. Really nice optics, compact and lightweight, good color and sharp.
Centre sharpness is respectable even wide open at f/1.7, sharpening up nicely by f/2.8, while the edges are acceptably sharp from f/2.8 to f/8.

The Summilux 15mm delivers high contrast images with very crisp details even with the aperture wide-open.

After 2 months shooting exclusively with this lens attached to my GM1, here is my personal review of it (and I will say upfront that I've fallen in love with it), with plenty of pictures taken at the Spanish Pyrenees to illustrate my opinions: http://gonzalobroto.blogspot.com/2014/08/new-lens-old-grounds-review-of.html
Optically it's very good indeed. Even wide open. The point of focus is very sharp and the images have a slightly different look to other m4/3 lenses I've used. It's more like a (D)SLR lens type rendering with a nice rich colour depth and contrast.
Sharpness is perhaps the strongest feature of this lens. It’s wonderful wide open and you may not want to stop it down. In fact, it only marginally improves until you start to see diffraction at around f5.6.

I decided don't buy Olympus 17mm 1.8 (less sharp than Lumix 20 1.7, makes noise at focusing), but 15mm could be good especially for x2.3 crop of 4K, it turns 15mm lens to 35mm POV full frame. I can't find answer to follow question: How Leica 15mm F1.7 dealing with AF-C autofocus (on GH4)? Now that will very interesting because of work with gimbals and steadicams (face detection autofocus mode). I can't touch manual focus ring during my work on gimbal. I upgraded from Leica 25mm 1.4 to Olympus 25 1.8 because of very bad autofocus AF-C. I very impressed of AF-C compatibility of Olympus prime lenses on GH4. Second Leica lens I have is 45mm 2.8 MACRO lens, it makes bad AF-C too, Olympus 45 1.8 real better.
In the case of lenses with very fast apertures, there is often a noticeable decrease in sharpness before f/2.8. Not so with the 15mm f/1.7. The lens is almost as sharp at the center at f/1.7 as it is at f/2.8, which in turn, is nearly as sharp as the sharpest aperture of f/4.
