Chinese manufacturers catched leaders and went ahead of iPads
  • I recently wrote about upcoming tablet using Retina screen (from iPad 3) and RK3066 chip.

Other manufacturers already started making quad code tablets.

They are based on Freescale i.MX6Quad, containing 4-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU, L2 1Мб cache, and 4-core Vivante GC2000 GPU.

    Tablets using this LSI:

    • Sanei N10 quad core (aka Ampe A10 quad core or Hiapad F10 quad core )
    • Chuwi V90

Here is Ampre A10 (10" tablet with 1280x800 screen):

  • Samsung was enjoying a record operating profit of $9.6 billion for its third quarter in 2013 and shipping Galaxy phones seemingly as fast as it could make them. Now? The company announced its operating profit for the period will be down to between $3.6 and $4 billion, which would be its fourth straight quarter of declines.

    Real tragedy.

  • According to the latest NPD DisplaySearch Monthly Tablet PC Panel Shipment & Value Chain report, total tablet display shipments declined 10% on year in the first half of 2014, while combined tablet display shipments to Apple and Samsung fell 34%. While the two companies had a 42% share of tablet panel shipments in the first half of 2013, their combined share dropped to 29% in the first half of 2014.

    How sad.

  • China-based vendors shipped 101.7 million smartphones in the second quarter of 2014, increasing 24.6% on quarter, according to Digitimes Research.

    Sales go to definite direction.

  • IDC estimates that Samsung's smartphone shipments saw a rare year-over-year drop in the second quarter, taking it from a lofty 32.3 percent market share down to 25.2 percent. That's still enough to give it a comfortable lead, but a shock for a company which is used to growth. The cause, analysts say, is the rapid rise of Chinese brands that cut directly into Samsung's business.

    Things happen.

  • China white-box tablet shipments reached about 25 million units in the third quarter of 2013, up 56.3% sequentially and 40.4% on year thanks to strong overseas shipments, which accounted for 80% of the total volume.

    Huh.

  • The world is still Android's oyster. Strategy Analytics estimates that the OS has crossed the symbolic 80 percent mark, reaching 81.3 percent of smartphone shipments by the end of September. Not that Google was the only company doing well -- Nokia's strong US sales helped Windows Phone grow to 4.1 percent of the market, or nearly double what it had a year ago.

Strange, Windows Phone must have died long ago according to analytics :-)

IC foundry Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC) capacity utilization of its 28nm processes has fallen to 70% due to a slowdown in orders for high-end mobile chips, according to industry sources.

With demand for high-end smartphones staying weaker-than-expected, TSMC's 28nm chip customers have moved to decelerate their pace of orders recently. Consequently, TSMC's utilization rates for its 28nm processes have slipped rapidly over the past few weeks, the sources noted.

    Who could have thought....

  • Android models accounted for 97% of the second-quarter smartphone shipments in Taiwan, followed by Windows Phone models with 2% and iOS ones with 1%,

    Hmm.

  • A number of branded smartphone vendors have recently reshuffled the top management of their operations in China as they are struggling to stay afloat in the country's smartphone industry amid the rapid rise of local brands, according to industry sources.

Among international players, the lackluster performance of Nokia and BlackBerry might be caused by the low popularity of Windows Phone and BlackBerry platforms in China, while slumping sales of Android phones offered by Sony Mobile, LG and HTC in China might be blamed on their pricing strategies and their cooperation relationships with local telecom carriers, commented the sources.

Additionally, while struggling in the mid-range to high-end Android segment, HTC, Sony Mobile and LG have been reluctant to step into the sub-CNY2,000 (US$327) segment, further weakening their competitiveness in the China market, added the sources.

  • In addition to Allwinner, China-based Rockchip also has entered the tablet supply chains of Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Toshiba and is the one of the potential partners of Asustek and Acer.

Facing competition from China IC designers, Qualcomm and Nvidia have seen weaker shipments. Nvidia is even reportedly considering launching own-brand Tegra-5-based tablets, the sources noted.

  • The company said on Tuesday that its revenue from China fell 14% year-on-year to $4.6 billion in the quarter ending June 29. The figure looked even worse on a quarterly basis, down 43% drop from the previous and marking the first time that revenue decreased in those three sales regions

And all this despite all major media playing for Apple and trying to fully ignore guys who made all this damages.

  • It was bound to happen, after a certain level of functionality and feature set are achieved people won't be upgrading every year for a little bigger screen etc

Right now it is not very big problem. As screen resolution is still increasing, same is happening for RAM and CPU. Big problem is chinese manufacturers who enter all markets, sometimes under local brands or chains own brands.

  • The new Nexus 7 looks interesting.

  • Apple's iPad shipments are expected to drop to only 10-12 million units in the third quarter, down from the company's announced 14.6 million units...

Of second-quarter shipments, 10-11 million units were iPad minis and 3.6-4.6 million units were 9.7-inch iPads, the sources estimated.

In the second quarter, iPad's share is estimated to have dropped to about 30-35%.

  • Disappointing sales of higher-end smartphones might have a negative impact on Siliconware Precision Industries' (SPIL) sales performance during the second half of 2013, according to market sources.

Suppliers of ICs for use in smartphones, particularly high-end models, are holding unpackaged chips due to a slowdown in end-market demand, the sources indicated. SPIL will likely report lower-than-expected revenues for the third quarter as its mobile-chip customers delay orders, the sources said.

Seems like high marginal products sales by Samsung and Apple have issues.

  • Samsung Electronics, currently the world's largest smartphone vendor, has continually downwardly adjusted its shipment targets by 10-20% during the past two quarters, causing Taiwan-based supply chain makers to worry about decreased orders from Samsung due to its slipping global smartphone market share, according to those Taiwan-based makers.

Apple seems to be not alone now :-)

  • Fun thing - SmartQ U7 Projection Tablet

  • LG Display’s net income for the quarter was $3.1 million, according to the Associated Press, which cited Hanwha Securities as estimating that LG Display’s iPhone screen sales had fallen by 42 percent, compared with the quarter before, while iPad screen sales fell by 31 percent.

    Things are not good.

  • China Business says Apple has rejected 5-8 million iPhones from Foxconn because they weren't built well enough (read - because they can't sell them at all).

    News become better and better.

  • Why is there never GPS in Chinese 10" tablets?

Because people do not use GPS in China, I guess. Hence in integrated solutions GPS support is usually absent.

  • Apple has reportedly stopped placing component orders for its Mac series products recently and related upstream suppliers so far have not yet received any word about when the US-based vendor will resume its orders, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.

The sources revealed that Apple's Mac orders to the supply chain dropped to almost nothing after the Lunar New Year holidays. Apple had high hopes for its Mac product lines and placed aggressive orders at the end of 2012; however, the company is now badly affected by the decision.

    Hmm.
