AVCHD maximum image quality settings and testing

  • @stonebat no that was for 1080p24 12 GOP (default) and to safely get AQ4. I'll certainly run a few tests at 12 GOP 720p60 for you later.
  • Why does everyone ignore me? I'm already tired of changing the firmware to 720 50p.
    If I use a 44M + 720 50p Gop 6-12, AQ 2-4, 28-42 Mbit, then GH2 dies. If I use http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/comment/14632#Comment_14632, GH2 dies too.
    When I use 66M + 720 50p Gop 6-12, AQ 2-4, 28-42 Mbit:

  • For those who want moderate settings at 1080p24 12 GOP try this 66M/44M set - the L setting should span (needs testing) along with 55M 1080i Long GOP & 720p60 default GOP.

All settings are AQ4 - so you can lower them with ease!

Tried a few 250 shutter with these and seem ok with fast lenses, etc...

  • @Botvinic That's because you cant just guess settings even if they are lower than any published here. They have to be tested mate. Youre tired?!!! I think Ive done around a thousand firmware changes this week alone!
  • @Driftwood

Your setting with FSH 1080 60i 1/125 f.8 ISO 160 image forest in sunlight day, lens lumix 100-300 OIS on, autofocus on, freehand, sandisk extreme pro card all ok but with Ext tele ETC camera freeze after 15 seconds.
  • @Ulisse Thanks. At least someone is testing the settings! You mean SH setting. Haven't looked at EXE tele mode with these settings... I'll take a look.
  • @Ulisse try changing the AQ4 to AQ=2 for me if you could. cheers.
  • Yep sorry was FSH 1080 60i, very sorry again for the big error.
    I correct the precedent post.
  • Now i test the SH 720p
  • @ driftwood
i tried your 56m settings -720p50 1080i50 - ( i am in a pal region). 720 is completely unstable for me even with sandsisk 32gb class10 in any condition, instead of 108050i, that is quite good and stable for now.

    Thanx
  • @bardamu That's because I havent tested against PAL land yet. I mentioned this yesterday. I'm doing PAL land at the moment...
  • "@bardamu,

at the moment is only for 60p 60i.
  • Driftwood,

Ideally, I'd like to go with 88Mb/s AQ2 to offer a decent bitrate and not steal to much SDHC card space.
Also, I'd like to be able to crank up the shutter speed for 720 60P. 720 60P is great for fast action and many will want to be able to max the shutter speed without an error. Do you think FSH/SH=47M and FH/H=40M will be decent enough to maintain quality and not crash at high shutter speeds? AQ2 for all modes.

For what I mentioned above, will these settings work? Or, will the larger difference between 1080P and 1080 60i / 720 60P mode cause 1080 60i or 720 60P to fuck up?

    Video Bitrate 24H=88000000
    Video Bitrate 24L=66000000
    Video Bitrate FSH/SH=47000000
    Video Bitrate FH/H=40000000
    Auto Quantizer for 1080 modes=2
    Auto Quantizer for 720 modes=2
    1080i60 GOP Size=30
    Video buffer 24p=0x3600000

    Or am I safe with:

    Video Bitrate 24H=66000000
    Video Bitrate 24L=44000000
    Video Bitrate FSH/SH=47000000
    Video Bitrate FH/H=40000000
    Auto Quantizer for 1080 modes=2
    Auto Quantizer for 720 modes=2
    1080i60 GOP Size=30
    Video buffer 24p=0x3600000
  • @proaudio4 Il run a few buffer tests on your suggestions.
  • @driftwood, I been using your 200 test settings and so far so good. The 132 Megabyte 24p mode is just gorgeous but it eats up card space. Luckly I found a 32GB class 10 200x flash card for £20, now we got the GH2 going at crazy bit rates- We just need big flash memory cards, which at the moment are fairly cheep but still £100 for a 64GB class 10.

I haven't been brave enough to push the 1080i 50/60 fps higher than 56 megabytes a second but hopefully we can get to go just a bit further.
  • @chrimsbroome On the current settings you wont be able to push them up beyond 56M else you'll either get fail/or bad buffer charts (ie huge drops in bandwidth). My settings maximise the bandwidth on all settings according to the set bitrate/buffer realisation. Everything has a ratio, and it starts from the p24 settings... ;-)

    Yep, 132M GOP3 is sublime.
  • Sorry guys i thought it was nearly the same between settings for 720p60 or 50 frames.
However thanks a lot for your great work!
  • @bardamu love your pseudo, big Celine fan
  • Thank you Driftwood!
  • I used C Brandin's 44MB set on some 720p stuff this weekend. Did some shots of chess pieces and then a torch lit scene the following night. The footage looked awesome, huge improvement in 720p 60.

  • @driftwood.....Yes I think this may be its maximum setting and I bee doing some tests and the video is very clean. I even tested it in premire CS5 and mixed some video together and it comes out as clean as it went in which is a huge bonus. However I am faceing a small problem- The camera stops writing to the card about 3.88 GB and I think its down to the Fat32 partion the camera supports. You menstiond that it should continue on from 4GB and split the file. It could be my memory card is not fast enough, it says 23MB on the card but its a class 10. I have orderd a faster can and a bigger size on a 32 GB. Hopefull its just the speed of the card thats making it stop all of a sudden half way through.
  • @driftwood....I see what its doing, I remember in the Panasonic Manual it said you can only write 30mins per continues shot so its because the camera creats a fat32 partistion and fat32 only supports max of 4 GB files. I am trying to think of a way around this. A bigger card might help but still you end up with a max of 8-10 mins per shot / sean. Can you think of a solustion Draftwood?
  • me too lenuisible :) i read all i can about him
  • The 30 minutes limit has nothing to do with FAT32, it's a European custom thing and can be deactivated with the hack (thank you, Vitalij, even this alone was worth it!).
Plus, since the limit in FAT32 would be 4 GB not 3.88 something else is wrong, might be your card.
