Specs:
The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II raises performance and quality to new heights in a compact, brilliant design. Canon 1.5-inch, 12.8 Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS Sensor
Almost as large as the APS-C CMOS sensor found in many EOS digital SLRs, and bigger than those found in 4/3 system cameras, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II's sensor sets the standard for sensitivity and resolving power in compact cameras. Each cell area is 4.5x the size of those found in 1/1.7 type sensors and is thus able to capture more light at the pixel level. This means better detail, even at higher ISOs, with minimal noise and distortion and, thanks to the sensor's wide cell pitch, breathtaking dynamic range. The PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera natively captures images in the 3:2 aspect ratio, which is the same as Canon EOS SLR cameras. The PowerShot G1 X Mark II also features a new Aspect Ratio function, enabling RAW image capturein both 3:2 and 4:3 aspect ratios while maintaining the same angle of view.

WOW! I didn't see that coming from Canon. Looks real interesting. I like that it's only 12.8 Mpix. Don't know why more companies don't go that route at this point. It's clear that packing more and more pixels isn't really necessary and hurts the DR.

It is not true. If you look photos is same resolution DR is usually same.
damn, that thing looks HUGE! Would be way bigger than a GM1. Though it does look interesting. Who knows, maybe in years to come I might pick it up cheap on a sale :-P
@IronFilm. Yes it looks bigger than a GM1, however the Canon also sports a bigger sensor than the GM1! Canon's 1,5" Sensorsize is between Micro Four Thirds and APS-C shttp://cameraimagesensor.com/size/#89,53,15,a
Looks like a very interesting camera indeed
Why would someone buy this over an a6000, or gm1, for instance ? It's amazing that canon has rested this long on it's past laurels. If it wasn't for ML, it would be even more embarrassing ! Truly, it seems only panasonic is willing to exploit their cameras potential to the fullest.
May be because lens is good with 9 aperture blades? Sensor is bigger than m43?
Plenty of reasons.
Great focal length! Too bad the video is only 30p. http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/canon-g1x-ii/canon-g1x-iiDAT.HTM
So far I'm sticking to my RX100 mk1 and hopes Sony gives the mk3 as good 1080 video as the RX10/AX100 and a faster lens.
Any one knows if the Magic Lantern crew have tried to improve on these Canon models?
Its the same price as a6000w/lens w/o evf. And canon wants 300 for the evf ! The sensor difference is minimal between 1.5" and m43. The lens specs are nice . It'll be a tourist walkaround camera champ...or photojournalist who want to look like tourist ! At this late date...it should have had 60p at least.
It is always good to understand that your opinion is your opinion. And plenty of different people with different needs exist.

I thought that was implicit in my post by mentioning "tourist walkaround camera champ". Yet in comparison to it's price competition, it appears to be lacking in the feature set category. Do I need to state " that's just imho ! Also, do you really think this camera...and I'm talking in video terms, is competition for the rx10 ?
Story of the PowerShot G1 X Mark II Development
Canon Powershot G1 X Mark II will start shipping at May 9th.
Depending on how soon the lens get to f3.9 the increased low light performance from a larger sensor will be offset by the constant f2.8 lens of the RX10.
I would be interested in the cam if it had 24p. Surprised it doesn't.
