@matt_gh2 and @griplimited Thanks to you both. For the most part I'm trying for a cinematic look with everything I do regardless of the project. The only limitation is often.... me. That said, talking heads and documentary work often dictate a different style. eg: A cinematic look for an interview would most likely be inappropriate or just flat out wrong. The attached vid, music composition and scenes, were initially for tests but will be part of a documentary I'm working on.

I'm doing a shoot at the ad agency i work for now and the crew I've chosen is using the Canon Mark II and III. Compared to the GH3's footage it's often close. Sometimes the GH3 looks better. Lots of variables in that analysis though.

As far as the GH3 goes I have to be honest. Even though I've personally invested in the M4/3 system, I'm still a bit in denial regarding its small but albeit powerful sensor! It's as if i still don't want to admit how technology is changing, getting better and I also need to change. Old thoughts and perceptions need to go out the window if I'm going to evolve, grow and move forward with the technology. That's hard to do sometimes. The real elephant in the room is money. If I, or anyone else, has a "professional problem" with the GH3 or other M4/3 systems I can just buy a....Red Epic. I don't have the money to buy a Red anything. So I guess it's inspiring and sometimes quite humbling see what folks on this forum are able to achieve with more "limited resources."

@maddog15 That sunset shot with the man and woman looks great. Have you used GH3 for anything narrative/movie focused? I'm curious what people are achieving with GH3 for movie look.

Dynamic range test with MP4 footage. Quite a bit of information there waiting to be pulled out/up. Even areas that seem close to crushed at first glance reveal a surprising amount of details when lifted in post. I'm very happy to see how much I was able to color correct, balance color and exposure for a silhouette shot. Though it may not look like it in the screen grab the sunset was really bright. Makes me wonder how much more information would be there had I set the contrast profile to -5 vs -2. Damn...oh well. Lens: 20mm f1.7 pancake.

I shot this week a wedding with second operator in 70d and one gopro, my settings in several lighting conditions and my -2 saturation and -5 contrast are almost the same with gopro that chooses always automatically what to do :P

The "Oh my god the camera's been on MP4 mode for 3 hours" shoot. No CC or grading.

@maddog15 glad that worked out for you! What is the bit rate of the mp4 files?

One other thing I'll add is that most projects are web delivered. I'm not super interested in amassing huge amounts of data so even if there was a super stable ALL-I hack, if it was over 100mbs, I probably wouldn't be that interested.

Shot this company spotlight over at DV Expo yesterday. GH3 + Voigtlander 25 + Monopod. Audio captured with Juicedlink RM-202 direct into the camera. Mic was Sennheiser 416 mounted on top of the camera.

In-camera settings 0, 0, -2, 0. I'm messing around with i.Resolution (yeah, @maddog15, I know you said don't do it ;-D ) and had it set to low.

I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. Minor color correction in FCP - just took the blacks down a smidge and increased the saturation a hair. I was pretty happy with the in-camera color balance, which was set to 2800k. I shot some stuff the day prior at 3200k and it was pretty difficult to get skin tones back to normal. I feel like you really want to "nail the kelvin" on the GH3. BTW "Nailin' the Kelvin" is also the name for a great track from the soundtrack for the JJ Abrams Star Trek reboot!

@maddog15 thanks for posting. My initial tests with iResolution just showed that it brought some more sharpening on the edges. Need to do more tests. Maybe this week. I'm using the GH2 as my "holy grail" for sharpness. So far tests have shown that GH3 is much softer. I haven't read through the entirety of this post. So I look to you guys for filling in some of the gaps on what I know/don't know. :)

@miza have you tried decreasing the contrast on the picture setting? also, which picture profile are you using?

last, you might be able to recover some of the shadows while color correcting by lifting the midtones.

Hi @zihan I have shot iso 3200 in f3.5 and though my footage was total lost, even though Hit the record button. Y got to premiere CC and my surprise is WOW is usable ;-)

Also keep in mind lenses have lot to do with noise. I tested Samyang and Panny lenses only.

So didn't have experience on GH2, but as for sub 2k canon dslr the GH3 is MILES AHEAD, in both DR and LowLight.

For me, higher than iso 1250/1600 go for AVCHD below that .mov.

Only issue for me (no real problem), is RED colour, its weird how GH3 manaje that channel, mostly if you dial saturation and contrast down to -5, sometimes so good sometimes greyish that affects skintones badly.

With T0.95 lenses, you can shoot very nice noise at iso 1600 almost no light.
