Those instructions confuse me. How do we update the lens if we're using the GH3?
Just download the file from the page I linked a few posts back, put lense on gh3, format sd card, extract downloaded file, copy to sd card from PC, put card in camera, turn camera on, press play, update will start :)
Well that's what I did on my gh3 and it worked!
Got both these lenses and the 45 comes out the bag much more often. Just seems to produce crisper results. Has to be extreme low light for the 50mm to get some use
Underrated lens?
Underrated lens?
45mm underrated? Are you serious? :-)
@Vitaliy_Kiselev, sorry, I meant in video, because few people use for video, but in still photo is considered one of the best M4/3 lenses.
i have this lens from the start and only used it once.. it sure is great quality glass but imo i prefer the character of my old minolta lens. also, the filter size and focus ring are not friendly to me.
Hey guys my cent and a 1/2. Rigorously unscientific.
BTW tests show that different lenses may she suited for different jobs/looks/situations, MHO.
Also photography it's another different matter... nevertheless IQ wise (non MTF speaking) these two lenses have some distinct strong personalities... and the Rokkor has this HUGE focus ring that turns and it focus and has no wire and still has numbers in it and focal measurements, wow!!! while the Oly guacamoly it's elegant and barbituric yet light and super tight, uhhhh.
Hope you're sensitive enough to appreciate the hardwork on the video cover, ja ja ja
Maybe someone can answer this:
On a full frame camera a normal 45mm lens is somewhat wide angle and a 85mm a tele lens. The slight tele lens 85mm features a bit of compressed space and slims the face in an elegant way. So if I use a 50mm designed for full frame and crop it 2x It doesn't have this slight tele function. It is just a cropped normal lens. My question: Is the oly 45mm designed to mimic a true 85mm lens for full frame with the compressed space and slim features or do I get the same results with my 50mm 1.4 takumar or nikon AIS with a 2x crop@100mm?
Well - You get about the same for example with the 50mm 1.4 compared to the 45mm Olympus - Why? Because the field of view / angle of view is about the same on the crop format - Only the the max. possible image circle is different (the 45mm 1.8 Olympus is designed for Micro 4/3 for example - The 50mm 1.4 for full frame sensor / 35mm film format). You also made the mistake, that you think, that a cropped 50mm isn´t compareable with a 100mm full frame lens for example (with 2 times crop) - Because: That´s more or less the same.
Sure - The angle of view (the 50mm lens on 2x crop vs. the 100mm lens on full frame) is still not 100% the same (if you MEASURE it - As there are lens model variations - And variations in crop formats and so on) - But it´s ABOUT the same (as through cropping the image you also limit the angle of view of the 50mm to about the angle of the 100mm on full frame).
I hope I didn´t confuse you too much ^^.
The major differences (more important points) are more often the lens characteristics: Background rendering (bokeh), micro contrast, overall contrast, sharpness, abberation resistence, flare resistence, color rendering (last both through different coatings) and so on. And here the 45mm 1.8 just "shines". Btw.: AF is also quite important. I LOVE my vintage glass collection - Especially my Yashica ML 50mm F1.7 (and the Zeiss pendant) - BUT: I missed THAT OFTEN lovely scenes because of the missing AF (i was just too slow to focus). So if you really want something for portrait work (and run and gun), don´t think too much about it - The Olympus 45mm F1.8 is a lovely lens - And fully recommendable! ^^
Thanks a lot for this info and since it's all in the normal lens/slight telephoto lens territory I bet the 45mm will perform well on uncorrected raw photos.
But I still need some more information which is more related to my GH4. In 4K the various cropfactor measurements go to near 2.6x and for the new picture aspect ratios it pushes crop factor further even more.
When you look at this post and start doing some serious cropping you'll end up getting wideangle distortions when you think you are using a telephoto lens.

If the subject is placing his/her hand towards the camera it will appear much bigger on a wide angle than on a telephoto lens. There is no lens correction possible, because the hand covers essential data. It's not possible to correct these individual distances between objects. So lately I'm seriously thinking of swapping the GH4 for a Sony A7s to use a true 85mm and have a lot less problems with hands and feet that point towards the camera. I also enjoy playing with DOF and bokeh.
EDIT: oops my question is answered in the same tread I just mentioned. It is de distance that matters and the relative distance of the camera to the subject and the individual distances between the subject and the hand.
