I could never find a 2.5mm angled stereo plug. The only other alternative to the regular straight plug which stick out of the camera and could potentially snap while inside the camera, is the 3.5/2.5 angled adapter. I found these adapters to be quite dangerous because they sometimes can loose contact and therefore are not very reliable. So I assembled my own version which works perfectly.
These two plugs are quiet standard i've seen them in shops and on ebay, easy to find and cheap. Make sure that the "golden" plug fits strongly into the GH2 plug to make a reliable contact.
Take the interior part of the golden plug and the exterior part of the silver plug, bend the interior of the golden plug or just cut it off so it fits the the shape of the silver plug.
Fit the golden interior part into the exterior silver part of the plug, so that the little "minidisc" (red arrow) of the golden plug is outside, if not it doesn't make contact. Sorry - I just realized that the exterior angled silver plug has a plastic inside whith which you fix the cable. I forgot to put it into the photo. But obviously that helps a lot the stability of the plug.
Done!
To confirm, then, you are saying that this converted plug has a more secure fit than the regular 2.5mm to 3.5mm angled plug many folks here use? I am pleased to hear it if so since the most recommended such plug frequently looses contact in my experience.
Is there a specific manufacturer of the above plugs that you used?
@WalterH Definitely more reliable in my experience. This plug doesn't spin around like the adapter does. I don't have a specific brand for this. I just bought them in a normal electronic parts shop. May be this one, it looks like it, but I am not sure: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Audio-Stereo-Cable-Nokia-MP4-2-5mm-Male-Plug-Connector-Adapter-Metal-Gold-Plated-/300601736274?pt=US_Audio_Cables_Adapters&hash=item45fd427c52
Great to know. Will explore myself. Thanks!
@WalterH I've only found one source for those angled adapters Walter. I ordered one and waited a week. What I got was an angled 3.5 to 3.5 adapter. I sent them a "Your a dumb ass" email and got a We must have had a slip up in our inventory department and will correct right away. Let us know if you want us to send the correct one.
I figured I could use the 3.5 to 3.5 so I ordered another 3.5 to 2.5 and a week later got a 3.5 to 3.5.
Another "you're a dumb ass" email and the same damn email I got before.
I wouldn't order another one if they were paying me!
@peternap as far as I know, 2.5mm angled adapters don't exist. What you get are these 3.5mm angled ones. Neutrik has a good reputation:
@gameb Great idea and definitely better than the adapter I'm using that adds cable.
@gamebgameb They may NOT exist but they sure are advertised: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000QU3JN4/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00

@peternap this is the adapter I was talking about not the plug. This adapter does exist. I have it. But this is the one that is not reliable. What does not exist (as far as I know) are the angled stereo plugs 2.5mm.
This one also looks promising http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-shipping-wholesale-2-5mm-to-3-5mm-audio-adapter-cable/440984440.html
@kavadni The first link shows a 4 conductor plug cable. It is not a single plug and as far as I understand the 4 conductor plug is not usable for our purposes. We need a normal 2.5mm stereo plug. The second link is an adapter, which I try to avoid, due to the well known problems.
A 4-contact plug works the same as a 3-contact plug if you short the bottom ring to the sleeve.
Good to know, thanks
@gameb .. the second link is indeed listed as an adapter.
However, it's a short length of cable. If you search, you can find them up to 6 feet long .. you attach your connector of choice to the other end.
The adapters that cause the issues are a sold piece of plastic not much longer than a plug itself.
That said, the quality varies of the 2.5mm plug itself.
Personally, I bought a 1metre long 2.5mm RA to 2.5mm RA cable and cut it in half, giving me 2 x 18" short cables, I then solder to the other end.
I really like that nuetrik connector and have ordered a couple.
@kavadni I have a few of those adapters (In the link) and they lock up solid and work well. I just hate all that extra cable dangling.
I also have couple of metal bodied 4 pole connectors that @crunchy sent to me, I'll ask him where he sourced them from, if he doesn't spot this post .. oops not RA, but there may be one available
This was bought in one small local shop and they were quite expensive (3 EURs for one). However, they are much more reliable than any other 2.5mm 4-pole connector I used before. ;-)
For reference, here is a pre-made 2.5-mm right angle cable that I've used. It has two wires coming out which can be separated, if you want to send them to two separate mics for stereo.
