My wife wants this phone and I was about to get it for her, then I saw this link and got really excited, then I read some reviews and there are comments that the camera quality isn't good, but it does have features, but the DR and detail etc suck. I can't tell on this laptop. Anyone have it and care to give feedback?
Went to Verizon to test one out today, and probably going to be picking one up as soon as Costco starts stocking them... Anyway, the duo camera doesn't seem to perform any better than other defocus camera features that are just baked into the software. It's not terrible, but it's not great either. As far as picture quality, it's a marginally improved sensor from the HTC One (M7) and it's a love hate thing for most.
For me personally, a cell phone camera is a cell phone camera. They all suck compared to a dedicated camera, especially with a nice lens in front of it! The HTC One M8 is by no means the best cell camera out there, but it's by no means the worst either. Motorola usually takes the cake for that...

Teardown
@brianl this phone is all through amazing, incredible build quality also. HTC gives online the bootloader unlock code for each device if requested. I was flashing it few times recently.
Actually I'm quite sure that there are already some tweaks and hacks for improving its camera functionality, check on the XDA developers forum. Otherwise something will be soon there.
I otherwise fully agree with @MagicMountainMan, but if you need to shoot a picture now and no dedicated camera but only the cell phone is in your pocket (like usual) then you're glad to have at least good camera on it.
