That's a walking stick. Apparently they aren't quite harmless as they can be pests to oaks and hardwoods. Who knew. I guess they eat the leaves and the tree can die. State parks here in Wisconsin have problems with them from time to time.
The Sphinx moth is just beautiful. It's about as big as a hummingbird and just as fluttery. I got 3 or 4 pics out of about 50 that were in focus. Not very common in this region. They emigrate south every year. They have a super long proboscis for nectar. It was very interested in the petunias.
