    Is there any practical use for this? I don't get it.

    If another person writes a text for me, it isn't any more personal than an actual e-mail since it still wasn't me writing this thing.

    Yes, it has big practical use. It is still much more personal than any email, as about "written by me", if you want to write it yourself, just do it, do not demain it from people who made very interesting thing.
