BlackMagic: Official $2,995 raw cinema camera topic

  • Regarding the new Blackmagic Cam, the naysayers are really killing me. IMO the idea that users won't know what they're getting into is preposterous!!! Yes there will be a new work flow to adapt to, but was it any different for new adopters of the RED Scarlet or even the 5DmkII. Anytime we're talking about a new acquisition device there will be new things to adjust to. I mean come on, this is the site where people are creating new Hack Patches for the GH2 every day!!! That certainly meant Learning new things about the Hack Functions, Testing and upgrades in SD cards and a new understanding of what you could do with the files recorded. Yes SSD, RAW, SDI, Thunderbolt and the many other new aspects of this cam will present a different set of requirements, and learning its limitations, but that's going to be pretty apparent to anyone who researches and buys this camera. Do you suppose that they would buy it somehow missing all these discussions about the new aspects of this camera? It's not a DSLR and I doubt anyone actually believes it is.

I think this is a new vista for many who have been looking to get a certain set of features from DSLR's and have been somewhat disappointed. The GH2, 5Dmk3 and D800 aren't obsolete because of this camera, but there is now a VERY compelling alternative to those cameras at this price range. Now there will be interesting discussions about how people will end up actually using this camera.

Do you go for this verses an FS100? Do you buy into this system assuming that there will be further development that bring new features closer to those of the Super35 cams? Is there any overlap with how people use DSLR's or Super35's now or is it in a class by itself? How will the images it produces compare with everything else and what new possibilities will exist with the RAW capabilities? Very interesting times. It's the 1st of a new class of camera. It's accessible to many more people and i'm excited about it. Instead of just renting some expensive exotic cam, A person can own and live with this camera and fully explore it's capabilities and master it's strengths.

  • I dig you guys' attitude about shooting ProRes in the interim. Enough willpower and gusto you can pick it up. Maybe some of you will actually become colorists. =D

  • I can't understand why people are saying they will be disappointed with a RAW workflow. For most of the stuff I have ever done ( I work in TV as a motion designer) it is very short form and I more often than not will do a colour grade to tape or now file of the rushes from a shoot. This is pretty much the traditional way of working going back to when I used to shoot on film and then telecine to tape. You always did a one light transfer or graded your rushes before the tape got ingested for editing. I see it as a way to sell more Da Vinci's ha ha! For greenscreen work this will be fantastic, to have the uncompressed data raw from the sensor for this price is a dream come true. Of course for a faster turnaround I suspect people would go with Pro Res or DNXHD. This is great too as you just drop it onto the timeline and away you go. In this respect I would expect footage to be more "baked in" in terms of look, but still be pretty good when grading in comparison to the dog that is h264. The 2 workflows are very different and yes people might be surprised by a raw workflow but I for one don't think it's an issue. What I'd like to see is whether you can change the flavour of ProRes in camera. This would be hugely helpful in making those SSD's last much longer in terms of how much you can write to them. @johnbrawley maybe you could whisper in Blackmagics ear to have this option. It would seem sensible to have a few options for ProRes shooting, considering the market this camera is aimed at.

  • @bwhitz, come on apple developed prores and that is a great codec, sure apples focus now is consumers mainly, and they did mess up final cut now, but they have done some good stuff in video world.

  • I will wait to see what BMD does on version 2. I will also wait to see what Panasonic does to compete with the FS700. I love the dynamic range of this BMD cam, the color space, and file format, but little else.

  • Apple would take the RAW image and make it the "Fun Codec" at "Good mb/s".

  • God forbid Apple buy BMD.

I read multiple times that this is mostly a Mac thing. This interview suggests that Apple actively contributed to the development of this camera. I wouldn't be surprised. It looks so neat and it works with FCPX out of the box. It also has the Thunderbolt port which is pretty unique as well. Resolve was also one of the first programs to work with FCPX XML. By now, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple buys BMD in the near future. Maybe BMD is going to build the next Mac Pro ;)

  • Raises some interesting thoughts

  • I too will shoot mostly in DNxHD as I do now on the Hyperdecks. I think I will venture into RAW with music videos. I also think I will be best served if I develop a more defined offline / online structure.

  • I'm certain I'd rarely use RAW. For all the reasons you guys say. It's kind of like having 4 wheel drive on your car, you'll rarely use it but hey! It's nice fucking knowing it's there if you need it!

  • @Brian202020 Thanks. I had looked before, but didn't venture into the support area.

BlackMagic list of drives. In their support department under the Shuttle II....

  • @kavadni I am aware of their converter and many more. I was trying to wish/think outloud was for a simpler, less expensive converter for the camera to hdmi monitors... For the $295 range, I might as well upgrade my monitor to one with SDI in. Less clutter.

I do not like big rigs. I'm not in the business of shooting with large crews and huge rigs. I'm more for small setups. I just spent some time shooting the blooming flowers in our yards with sunlight, GH2, and smallHD 4. Pain in the ass outside moving around in the bright sunlight. I like the monitor, but it's not the end all.

  • Native 800 ASA.

  • @jfro

Go to the Blackmagic website and look up the recommended drives for the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2. Since some of the tech of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera is based off the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2, I bet that is the list the employee was talking about.

  • @jfro

Yes it works for CS5.5. Just use it as you would with DPX files.

  • In a BlackMagic floor interview, one of the employees mentioned they have a suggested list for SSD's. Anyone know where to find the list?

  • @Vitaliy_Kiselev "As far as I know Premiere must open any CinemaDNG files."

I assumed that (since Adobe invented it and gave it to the community). I was asking if anyone experience and I'm also assuming CS5.5 would work.

@kavadni I'm in same boat with my SmallHD4, but they don't make it with BNC (as far as I know). I'm hoping within 3 months there will be an small and inexpensive converter for either the sdi to hdmi, or thunderbolt to hdmi cable. Might be wishful thinking, but I'd think either Black Magic or one of the monitor companies (smallHD) would find it to their benefit to develop and market such a piece.

  • @kavadni

Thanks for the info about ultra scopes working under Windows. Just wasn't sure...

I'm looking into the new Windows-based laptops coming out with the new Ivy Bridge cpu and thunderbolt ports; should be a great combo with an internal SSD.

  • Good for the people who are aware of what raw workflow entails. Sucks for those who don't. Oh well. They'll adapt, eventually.

  • I think many will be disappointed about the raw because they have heard some much about it but the workflow and know-how will just be too much for them. But I think the Prores/dnxhd at 10 bit and log output is going to be still very very good. You might loose a little DR and gradability but it will still be much much better than the baked look in 8 bit 4.2.0 to 4.2.2 that most of us are using. It will closer to the $ 13 000 Sony F3 or $ 50 000 Alexa. I think in this way blackmagic has really a mature product an approach. In 9 out of 10 case people will find the compressed output more than enough.

  • @kavadni "I wish I had added the SDI option to my DP6 when I ordered."

You can send it back to them for the upgrade. Price isn't too bad, it's on their website.

  • @kavadni video range is probably Rec. 709 an film will be some kind of log gamma...
