I am a complete novice, so please bear over with me if my video vocabulary is a bit limited.
I consider myself a still photographer and thats why I purchased the GF1 in the first place. For some years now, I have enjoyed using a video capable P&S camera for small (poor quality) video sequences and put them together in Windows Movie Maker but it doesn't really work with the GF1 video files. I enjoy the very high quality I achieve with the hack and would like to preserve it when editing the video

So what is an inexpensive, easy to use application which can run on a low end low spec laptop (1.5 years old 3mb RAM 2.1GHz MS Vista with some insignificant spec'ed on board graphics chip)?
    These are my requirements:

    * Price below USD 100
    * Must be able to run on a low spec labtop (I don't intend to upgrade for this purpose and I am willing to be patient when working)
    * I use LPowel's reliable patch and I am shooting MJPEG only
    * User friendly: I dont want to learn more than absolutely neccessary
    * I usually shoot small sequences of around 20-60 seconds and need to trim them and combine the clips into small videos of max 5 min.
    * I need fade transitions between clips
    * I need some simple sound control as I don't pay much attention to sound when I record video (for example I need to be able to use some ambient sound from one clip to replace the sound of another).
    * Some text functionality (placing some explanatory text during the video).

With possible exception of intelligent use of limitied computing resources I would expect my requirements is covered by most products, so what would be your recommendation for a user friendly application that doesn't require to much PC power?

    Thanks in advance

  • Premiere Elements 2019

The Elements team is excited to announce the release of Photoshop Elements 2019 & Premiere Elements 2019.

    The 2019 release focuses on:

    • streamlining the apps' usability to get you up and running quickly
    • discoverability enhancements so that you can get inspired, learn and uncover fun new projects to try out yourself
    • improved performance across the board.

A home screen designed for you

The first thing you'll notice when opening Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements 2019 is the brand-new Elements Home Screen that welcomes you every time you open the apps. The new Home Screen offers a personalized experience by surfacing info on what's new since your last version of Elements and content suited to your level of expertise.

Auto creations, made just for you

Beautiful photo and video slideshows and collages are automatically created just for you highlighting memorable moments like birthdays and vacations and delivered upon launch in the Home Screen. It's all thanks to photo and video automation powered by Adobe Sensei AI technology.

Beyond the Home Screen, there are a number of exciting new features and enhancements across Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements 2019 to help you create stunning photo creations, videos, and movies so that you can then quickly share your memories in print, DVDs, the web and across your social media channels.

So, let's dig in to what's new and enhanced.

    Redesigned photo collages

In this release we've redesigned your photo collage creation experience so that you can create collages with fewer clicks and quickly choose from stylish new templates that look great as Instagram posts and more. You also have the ability to customize your photo collages by adding frames and changing up backgrounds for the perfect finishing touch.

    Guided edits

Photoshop Elements 2019 is introducing four all-new Guided Edits, bringing the total to 53 step-by-step photo editing guides to help you quickly edit and create.

Create amazing multi-photo text: Now you can design visual text that features a different photo inside each letter to make words or names that look great as wall art, invitation cards or scrapbook pages.

Make fun memes: This Guided Edit walks you through the process of typing in text, adding filters, borders and more to turn your photos into memes that are perfect for sharing on social media.

Turn part of your photo into a sketch: Make a unique artistic statement by turning part of a favorite photo into a sketch by brushing on the medium of your choice, including colored pencil, old paper, or an aged photo look.

Add polish with text and border overlays: This new Guided Edit teaches you how to embellish photos with borders and text that make them stand out -- whether you plan to print it out or post it online to social media.

Enjoy better performance and HEIF support

The team worked hard to improve your experience with Photoshop Elements, and you'll notice it right off the bat with a faster download and installation process and improved performance throughout common photo editing tasks. We've also added support for importing and editing HEIF images on macOS.

    Redesigned Quick Edit mode

Creating your movies is now easier than ever with our completely redesigned Quick Edit mode. The new, user-friendly, editing interface presents you with two options:

Smart Trim, which automatically finds your best footage and walks you through a series of steps for trimming a video.

A simplified Sceneline for combining clips, photos, titles, music and more into a unique production that you can then share on DVD, the web or social media.

    Guided edits

Premiere Elements 2019 is introducing two all-new Guided Edits, bringing the total to 20 step-by-step video editing guides in Premiere Elements that help you get started.

Make glass pane effects: This Guided Edit helps you make the action in your scene appear like its taking place behind the glass. You'll learn how to add a video overlay to create this sleek look.

Create Luma fade transitions: Add a professional looking dramatic scene transition, which walks you through the process of fading in the colors from darkest to lightest in your video creations.

Enjoy better performance plus VFR, HEIC and HEVC support

Just like in Photoshop Elements, you'll experience the same faster download and installation process and improved performance on common video editing tasks. We've also added support for variable frame rate (VFR), import and editing of HEIF images on macOS and HEVC video on macOS 10.13 and above.

  • VEGAS Movie Studio 15

February 27th, VEGAS Creative Software releases VEGAS Movie Studio 15. This brand-new version makes it the most powerful two-in-one solution for video and audio editing in its segment.

Based on the core technology and features of the award-winning VEGAS Pro, the latest update of VEGAS Movie Studio enables professional results with minimal effort. 4k video editing and hardware acceleration improvements (support for Nvidia and Intel's Quick Sync Video) bring top-level standards of video excellence and speed, whilst the new HEVC support allows users to significantly compress large video content while maintaining perfect quality.

The new modern user interface is now fully customizable to benefit experienced editors. Firstly, a new “hamburger menu” button has been added, giving users the power to decide which button set should be visible in each window. The most noticeable update from the previous version is a logical, modern docking window behavior and control that allows users to arrange the workspace to individual workflows. You can even select between dark or light shades of interface background color according to preference.

For the beginners, a Quick Start dashboard has been added to guide with step-by-step instructions for video production, making it even easier to get started. An integrated ‘Show-Me-How’ tutorial feature that already exists from previous versions is still there to help. On top, new features like picture-in-picture scenes, freeze frames and split-screen sequences provide a professional look-and-feel to the video with just a few clicks on the storyboard. YouTubers or Vloggers will love the sharing-workflow-automation feature, now with improved file format support including iPhone video files.

For advanced users, the Suite version additionally offers iZotope RX Elements to achieve high-quality sound, as well as top-notch film effects coming from HitFilm and Boris FX.

“With the new VEGAS Movie Studio 15 we bring the powerful technology and high efficiency of VEGAS Pro to everyone who wants to make best-quality videos with minimal efforts,” says Gary Rebholz, VEGAS Product Owner.”

Depending on their requirements, filmmakers can choose between three different versions of VEGAS Movie Studio 15:

  • Anyone know much about Power Director 11 got some good reviews from PCMag vs some others talked about here? It does mention supporting 4K interesting in a cheap $85.00 editor.

  • Fun thing made for tablets by Magix

  • @subco

    It is really weird review.

To be short, if you have modern CPU and GPU, it is much better idea to get latest version.

  • @Kihlian Thanks for the info there. The program is very good for all the reasons you have listed. I was just expecting it to be a good performer from the word go so I unistalled it pretty quick. I will have to go back and revisit it now after your comments and VKs.

Perhaps it was not taking full use of the available CUDAs or something, definately worth investigating

  • @Sph1nxster The performance and stability in rendering could be improved but I find you have all you need in one cheap editor: (denoiser, plug-in support, slo mo with frame interpolation, multicam, titles, transitions, sound fx ecc.). With the patch 12.0.1.4 the color correction goes really faster and I believe they will improve the Editor more and more. If you read the manual there are many changes that you can make to make the Program faster, the preview rendering are also fast.

@subco Thank you for the suggestion with the audio. Audio always give me headache! About Lightworks, it´s sad becuase it works really fast, but the interface is really complicated without reason and the developers in the forum really ignore all suggestions of the users. I find that a modern NLE must have more features than cut & rendering. They now try to correct the program don´t know if the project will end in a good way, I find they have few fanatic users becuase it´s free. The crashes are not for me a big problem because it saves before the project with the last click you do. In two words: Complicated and poor in features.

  • Just noticed there is now a patch for MEP 2013

Changes in the patch 12.0.2.2 versus 12.0.1.4:

    • Uncommon start-up errors fixed
    • Audio problems with certain MOV files fixed
    • Color correction is now calculated on the GPU making it significantly faster
    • Image repitition or jumps occurred with non-integer framer rates in certain object constellations
    • Hairlines fixed in certain image-in-image effects
    • Improvements made to title handling, quick access feature buttons, exports, preview rendering and online features
  • @Sph1nxster

Magix will also have some update of video line early in the new 2013 year.

  • I know, i'm saying Corel is what i use currently and that is why I am thinking of moving.

I have Videostudio X5 from Corel and it has no multicam editor. Therefore I am between MEP 2013, Video Pro X4 & Vegas Pro 12.

If I can get MEP 2013 to run faster then that is what I will go with.

  • @Sph1nxster

Sorry? I am talking about Magix pro offering not about Corel product.

  • Faster?

Because if Magix Edit Pro 2013 is no use then it will be between Pro X4 and Vegas Pro 12.

I love Corel's simplicity but no Multi Cam Editor without some serious work arounds is no use and taking too much time to put together these segments.

  • @Sph1nxster

I suggest also to try MAGIX VIDEO PRO X4

  • Thanks, i'll give it another try then.

I really wanted it for the multi cam editor

  • @Sph1nxster

I think if you'll use intraframe and remove frame interpolation it'll be quite good.

  • Yeah downloaded latest trial version of Movie Edit Pro 2013.

  • @Sph1nxster

    Is it last version?

Plus Magix is not really great for realtime rendering if you have multiple things running.

  • @kihlian I tried Magix Move Edit Pro and although the lay-out and ability to edit was fantastic I found the performance to be really poor.

For example I added two AVCHD 28mb/s clips, applied minor colour correction, slowed them both to 80% and a simple cross-fade and it literally ground to a halt.

    PC = Intel i7 - 64bit - 16gb RAM - SSD - Nvidia Geforce 670

We normally use Corel X5 and it never really slows down at all, even when working with multiple tracks. (I dont use the Smart Proxy feature)

So I dont think the capabilities of the PC are the problem. Is there anything I may be doing wrong? It was a trial version but I cant see how this would make a difference.

  • After month of trying to work with Lightworks I give up. Simply basic function like know or decide where to save the projects is not possible, you could not decide frame rate or size of the Video. Third party plug-ins like Twixtor are not supported. Every request that people make in the forum receive an answer like: This is a professional NLE and we don´t care about it. (F.E. frame interpolation in slow motion). They only take care of positive feed-back. So thanks V.K. suggestion I switched to Magix Video DeLuxe 2013. Has little stability problem wen rendering but it´s really good, (I used before Premiere Pro CS4). It has a really powerful denoising plug-in that helped me a lot with high ISO footage. Opposed to Lightworks It´s really simple to learn. Here is a low budget footage that I made for a distillery completely cut with Magix Video DeLuxe 2013:

  • New LIghtworks Accessories: (A lot to spend at the high end but free version still available)

    image $140

    image Console $2800

    http://www.lwks.com/index.php

  • but it´s really weak in colour correction

Last time I checked it had quite standard color correction options (shadows, midtones, highlights). One for primary and one for secondary color correction.

  • I download the trial version of MAGIX, like it has slow motion with frame interpolation, image stabilizer, nice effects but it´s really weak in colour correction, has not level adjust.

  • @thepalalias

    I have no idea.

In this niche MAGIX is the leader. Plus they have very good sales as I am aware.
They buy developers and companies and just add all this to their bundles (check their Samplitude Studio).
They are also known for not destroying software teams.

  • @Vitaliy_Kiselev Any ideas as to what feature(s) or support led to the reccomendation?

If you look at package it has special "Recommended by Panasonic" badge :-)
