The Evil Empire 3
  • "Loyalty is not just to a nation but to friends and interests," Schmidt said in a speech at the opening ceremony of the CeBIT technology show here today. "That will change everything for citizens, states, and society."

"The Web unites all of us in sentiment and action."

"In times of war or suffering, it will be impossible to ignore the images that come out," "It will be far easier for communities to mobilize against autocratic regimes."

"Forty countries today engage in online censorship," up from four a decade ago. "I think we'll see more, but they'll fail. The Internet and technology are like water: they'll find a way through."

Here you'll find all the stamps and ideas of already quite formed beast.
If you want to talk to your friends, somehow you must do it by providing huge amount of information to large corporations.
This corporations also decide that you could do and also that ideas, information and groups are fine and that can not be allowed in their owners interests.
After this they declare that they know that "regimes" are allowed and that are not really (people who live in this countries usually do not count).
If some countries protect themselfs against all this techniques, it is certaily "online censorship" and "they'll fail".

Yep, war moved to the information side. And Google, Facebook, Twitter are no different from tanks, bombs and rockets in their real effects.

  • So you're saying the forces behind social media deliberately shape opinion of the masses? That they're propaganda machines?

  • So you're saying the forces behind social media deliberately shape opinion of the masses?

They are not only shaping opinion. They are just a tools. New generation of tools. Much more dangerous.

    That they're propaganda machines?

Propaganda is too limited word for this. They are new kind of weapon.

Making analogy, something like a lion. While he is young , he is fun to play and all. But it won't be against eating you later :-)

  • Okay, but how does that work since most of the content is user generated?

  • Vitality, you have a point..I was telling people this a few years ago and they laughed at me, but as I recall they laughed at the man who over a hundred years ago who tried to tell people that microbes, invisible to the human eye, were the cause of infections..now we know better.

  • Okay, but how does that work since most of the content is user generated?

"User generated" are just bad words for real situation. As I said, this guys filter groups, help fight opponents, prevent organization of one people and enforce organization of the other. Plus it is giant database of your actions (also tracked on many outside sites), your data, your comments, your contacts.

Don't like some new politic in small country who can make problems for your corporations stealing resources? Send him his sites visits and few comments made in private mail and conversations 15 years ago then he was in school. Sounds nuts? Nope. This is real goal of all this stuff.

  • @bostonmike

Even worse things is the "clouds".
As this guys also offer foreign companies to move all the documents, finance and mail in them :-)
And many companies are doing this completely unavare that all this data are monitored, stored and will be used in the future.

  • I wouldn't be surprised if ten years from now people were getting tiny implants surgically put in their bodies..tiny things the size of a grain of rice that can manipulate brain waves...no more invasive than a tattoo or piercing and can offer increased sensory awareness, increased health, etc...whatever the manufacturer tries to claim they can do..these would become fashionable, people would want them like an iphone...next thing you know, once society is hooked on the craze, the government can easily step in and say "hey, this great, we're going to implant newborns 'for free'..this will offer heightened intelligence, better immunity blah blah blah...kind of like telling us flouride is good for us" what they've really done is marked every individual in the country so they can be traced, tracked and their brain waves registered..see what you like, what you hate, market things to you...all of course in the matter of your 'best interest'....then what happens when someone figured out how to control these implants to manipulate brain waves on the masses....its not science fiction, its the not so distant future...actually I think this is how Obama got elected.

  • I wouldn't be surprised if ten years from now people were getting tiny implants surgically put in their bodies. tiny things the size of a grain of rice that can manipulate brain waves

Do not worry, our science is very far from anything like it :-)

  • Our technology, yes… ;-)

  • @brianluce "Okay, but how does that work since most of the content is user generated?"

But they control that. You really think all "vial videos" and such arise all on their own? The elites at youtube/facebook can spike and/or promote any video they like on a whim... and vise-versa. We just don't have access to the data to determine weather or not some video receive "phantom" hits or not.

Why do you think all these creators are getting such exorbitant amount of money for these websites and social media outlets? I don't think they're making it all back with advertising. They just want the control of information flow. That's what's justifying the billions spent for outlets like facebook.

  • @bwhitz Okay just to be devil's advocate, most of the viral videos are home videos of cats or japanese teenagers blinking vacuously to webcam.

What it seems like to me is that social media only really want to sell me viagra and yoga lessons or whatever appears on the sidebar.

And data mining? Oh geez, I feel sorry for the FBI if they're stockpiling my biodata. Boring! They probably have me on "Ignore".

  • I'm sure if there's ever a surgical implant, Vitaliy will work out some hacks.

  • There's an upside to social networks too.

KONY 2012 from INVISIBLE CHILDREN on Vimeo.

  • Brian, that dude who put out the Kony 2012 video is one of the biggest hypocrites around. He's the type of white guy that will throw a pregnant or elderly white woman out of her seat to give a young black guy a seat on the bus...I go by the motto, "equal rights for all, special priviledges for none"....we need more Ugandans in this world anyway like Telly Savalas needs a hair dryer..but it makes white liberals feel all warm and fuzzy to help Africans..

  • One thing for sure about Kony 2012, it's some shoddy ass excuse for journalism.

  • the whole kony campaing is very fishy to say the least! but really what im most afraid are cookies and trackers on web pages all you broswing is linked this is becoming very dangerous. ill said bye google soon.

  • It's not so bad. Soon they'll offer you a second chance, a witness relocation program for your facebook crimes.

"Eric Schmidt suggested that young people should be entitled to change their identity to escape their misspent youth, which is now recorded in excruciating detail on social networking sites such as Facebook."

+1. The guys who made that video are the most dangerous/worst people on the planet right now...

Reverse-sociopathatic narcissists who parade around like they're helping "the people". Using emotional manipulation and social media to sway people...

  • @bostonmike "...that dude who put out the Kony 2012 video is one of the biggest hypocrites around. He's the type of white guy that will throw a pregnant or elderly white woman out of her seat to give a young black guy a seat on the bus..."

So when you can't find any real dirt about someone you detest, you just make shit up?

  • We need more Ugandans in this world anyway like Telly Savalas needs a hair dryer.

So genocide is a good thing in this case? This sounds like something out of pre WW2 Germany.

  • Well said Bwhitz, well said. Some people are very naive and impressionable when they see some putz making a white liberal video...I remember some white liberal in my neighborhood one day, holding up a cardboard sign with starving Africans on it. I was at a red light and he asked me for money and I said "no"..he said "c'mon, don't be like your grandfather"..I said "WHAT?" my grandfather died in WW2 leaving my mother orphaned, fighting for his faggot-ass...I bitch-slapped the guy right there and tossed his "sign" on the ground. These clowns are a plague upon society.

  • @bostonmike "These clowns are a plague upon society."

In my opinion, race-baiting internet blowhards are a plague this forum can do without.
