@IronFilm It's like they hate us.
It has nothing with hate.
Canon made fully proper move to dual pixel AF. But it added them problems due to next thing.
Yet, they faced huge issue at LSi front, as compact sales dropped too fast. Plus design and manufacturing cost for lower norms are much more expensive. For their system to work good they need good advantage in LSI design over competition, and they just do not have any of this. If they put just more elements into LSI, it becomes too hot to be used, so they cut functions, add crops, etc.
Interview in Japanese about this camera
I've heard it said that the EOS-R has an Anti-Alias filter which softens the image a lot compared to the likes of the GH5 so that 4K looks like upscaled 1080 - however I don't think it IS just upscaled, as Canon would be toast in the video world if that were true.
Anti Aliasing filter can be only set to work on frequencies typical to full resolution of sensor for photos.
As for 4K resolution for EOS R - it is simple scientific ways to see it, not all this bla-bla-bla stuff.
YCImaging‘s YouTube channel looks dramatically better since switching over to the Sony a7 III. The clean image and excellent detail is achieved by downsampling the 4K image from 6K and there’s the wonderful full frame shallow depth-of-field, along with pleasing skin tones.
Meanwhile, though I dig his meticulous attention to lighting and the orange and teal grade, Armando Ferreira’s video, recorded with the EOS R, looks like it was shot with a potato (pun intended). Lack of detail, combined with aggressive sharpening and noise reduction, along with a preposterous 1.8X crop in 4K, make Canon’s first foray into full frame mirrorless the one to avoid in 2018 (and beyond).
Note: Armando's overhead shots, taken with the a7 III, not only have more natural color, but also have true detail.
