...they took a step back, technique-wise, from how typical creatures are being done both at ILM and other high end facilities. Instead of a more physically-accurate approximation of skin over muscle over bone this was a model being distorted by deformation shapes which would have been closer to state-of-the-art about ten years ago but it still totally works.
All of the kaiju were designed so that their overall proportions allowed for a human operator, as if the skin was a suit. It was a respective nod towards the "suitmation" of TOHO.
