Big box/big corporate suckology. School photos.
  • My kid's school pics came today. Like last year, the class group pic totally sucks. Worse looking that a iphone photo. Terrible resolution, color rendition, everything. The outfit is called Mytouch and seems to be some corporate juggernaut. Used to have a local shop do them. They were way better. Now our school has gone corporate and the quality is garbage. This fits my conspiracy theory that these big boxers, Wallmarts, etc, are in actual fact not competitve in terms of product and services. Buy local.

  • +1 I was watching a "photographer" take pics for the local soccer league last week and had to just walk away! My girlfriend told me not to look! haha

  • There's a huge problem in these kinds of industries: schools don't want to put the work into determining the best photographer, so they just hire a company with a brand they can trust.

These companies hire the cheapest labor they can, who do a mediocre job.

But frankly, for 98% of people, the mediocre job is good enough. We can chide them for that, but if it's a choice between convenience/price vs quality, 98% of people are always going to choice convenience/price, especially on things that require specialized knowledge like photography.

  • And guys, obviously, these corporate hacks are killing guys like us! Personally, I'm not really an event guy or stills guy, but there are a lot here at PV. This is OUR action.

I'll tell you strange thing. During socialism most photographers doing such things here were really good.

Now it is not bad, but digital stuff made it highly competitive race, where your marketing skill and connections matter most.

Get last Rode contest. Mass media connections and bots won the race.

Same with the Doritos Superbowl "contest". The "winners" had connections to marketing people who were running it. They got boosted to the finals instantly and bypassed the initial judging of thousands... not to mention, all the finalists were part of a team that basically made them all with shared budgets. Not really a contest at all. Just another way to generate traffic and buzz. Online contests are mostly worthless.

Profound lesson here. Seriously. Life is politics. Who cares about talent and integrity, what matters is having a 25 y/o MBA with a nice set of tits and a powerpoint.

  • @bwhitz You must live in LA!! Every year when that damn contest comes up, I see big production companies out shooting those damn things. I've had friends in them and they say the feel like they are in a real national commercial shoot. Just crazy.

  • I grew up in the French education system and still keeps all my B&W school photos. Thru the years, we had the same photographer, he either used a view camera or his Mamiya TLR. I know he developed himself the B&W photos as I learn B&W developing from him.
