The only adapter I've seen is this one: http://bit.ly/obeiGG

Looks nice, but it costs $320!!!!! (seems very over-priced)

    Anyone know of alternatives?

  • Don't do it. Those B4 lenses are not made for CMOS sensors. Just buy fast primes.
  • There are some nice examples of these lenses working well on gh1 (and maybe gh2).

The advantages of using these lenses are:

    1. much *more DOF* (b/c of tele-option on gh2);
    2. many b4 lenses are parifocal;
    3. lenses have constant (stepless) wide aperatures (f1.8) throughout the zoom range.

These lenses would be great for documentary or event shooting work.
  • @qwerty123

You can mount B4 lens using this thing (see my posts)
    http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/52/how-to-fix-lens-to-adapter-looseness/p1

You'll need to remove rear bayonet mount, most probably.
But it looks like throw is not enough (you need longer threads).

Contact sellers, they wanted to make version suitable for B4 and similar stuff.
    Talk to them.
  • Btw, cheaper B4 adapters also exist on ebay, they are just not so easy to find.
  • Hmmm. I'll look around ebay a bit more. Perhaps an alternative would be finding a cheap b4 to nikon (or canon) mount, and then double mounting onto gh2.

BTW, you thought $320 was a lot? Looks at this thing: http://www.abelcine.com/store/HDx2-MFT-B4-MFT-Optical-Adapter/
For that amount of money you also loose a wonderful 2 stops of light!
This is why the extended tele mode on the gh2 rocks.
  • Aren't those B4 lenses designed for 3 chip cameras? http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-CCD_camera

Are you sure B4 lens will give good sharpness and good color tone on single chip CMOS camera?
  • Check out this link: http://www.componentgeek.com/lenses-micro-four-thirds/b4-lens/canon-j8x6b-6-48mm-gh1/ There are also some links to more footage towards the end of the article.
  • I found a broadcast lens in rare c-mount before, a Fujinon 7.5-105mm f1.4. I've seen many of them in B4 so was lucky to pick it up. Hence I was able to modify it for GH2 to use with ETC mode:
  • I spoke with the guy at www.leitax.com and ask him if he could make an adapter that would screw over the current bayonet and we could end up with something like a canon ef mount.

He told me he could give it a try and that sounds like a good idea.
He needs a lens to make a prototype. If someone is interested email him.
    info@leitax.com.
  • I use Canon B4 ENG lens on my GH2 with B4 -> FD -> M43 adapter. It's made for 2/3 inch sensors and it fills whole GH2 CCD correctly when I enable built-in 2x extender.

It's somewhat soft when open fully wide, but it's plenty sharp when zoomed in, despite being built for Betacam SP.

Rumors of "being built for three chip CCD's and thus unusable for single CCD" are untrue. Three chip or not, all ENG lenses have same chromatic focal point, thus will focus all colors in the same plane. Back-focus needs to be adjusted though.
  • Is there a way to correct the slight chromo in post?
There is some skew there. I get more in J lenses than in "YJ" B4 mount lenses.
  • @ed_lee83 Not to change the subject... but that was probably the most awkward wedding video i've seen. The bride wasn't looking at the groom at all, she didn't seem interested, and the kiss was really awkward.
  • @x_worpig_x
No problem. You are right, though....

Figured out why chromo was better in the "non B" lenses,
The B in Canon's naming system is for adjustment for the 3 ccd prism.
Evidently, this feature loses that adjustment after a while.
Which correlates with a main varible on how well an individual ENG B4 lens works with the GH2... It's overall condition.

I am testing for other features which are especially helpful in a GH2 system. Anyone know what the suffex's IX12, SX12, PX12 refer to?
  • @bubba

I am having the B4 J with 2x extender built-in lens and it is behaving wonderful, the resolution is great, I have no CA issue just some edge blur on wide open aperture, and it is first time that I heard that the YJ lens is better than the J lens, can you post some footage I would like to see the performance of the YJ lens, since the YJ lenses are a lot cheaper the the J series, I might consider of buying one.
  • @ed_lee83
Well you showed off your ENG technique! Fast focal-length changes and *that look* you only get with ENG lenses. Great video. Did you use a 2nd camera at all? Did you have to ask the talent to repeat anything for the camera? If not, extraordinary coverage for a 1-camera shoot!
  • @oneday

I figured it out... See my post following the one you responded to.
A newish YJ easily outperforms a worn out, maladjusted J.
The B prism adjust feature is just another thing that can go wrong with an ENG lens. Not having a feature means that it can't go bad.
BTW, these are great lenses...all of them!
  • @oneday
If they're cheap, buy a good YJ.
These really are great lenses...all of them!!
  • @bubba
    >Anyone know what the suffex's IX12, SX12, PX12 refer to?

the X is optical " X -Element" which corrects colour aberration to a much lower level than with conventional optical elements and layouts. Using these innovative technologies, the length is 13.3mm shorter and the weight is 70g lighter than the previous models, M.O.D. is 0.6m. = from Canon brochure

  • @x_worpig_x haha very true. The bride was rather nervous and jittery. This wasn't a paid gig so it wasn't really my concern.

@Roberto thanks man, one-man shoot it was. Had to ask someone to cover me with an umbrella though, haha.
  • Somebody in China has started making B4 adapters at less than half the price of the European machined ones.
Any test results welcome. See http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/360416729005?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_3655wt_1274
  • looks like the canons are jealous, they will get their B4 optical adapter that spreads the lens to fit APS-C sensor

  • Anybody tried the jinfinance b4 to micro 4/3 adapter? Feedback / thoughts?

    cold hearty palms?
    I've seen that video before.
    Are you in Raleigh?
  • qwerty123 January 3 "Anybody tried the jinfinance b4 to micro 4/3 adapter? Feedback / thoughts?"

Yes I ordered some. The notch is not at the top where it's supposed to be but at an angle. It's fine for lenses without a zoom servo / handgrip, but if you're planning on keeping the servo / handgrip on then it's no good because it points down at a 45 degree angle.

I bought more than I need and because of this I would like to sell some of mine. I don't know the protocol for listing "for sale" items in this forum but I will sell them at a $10 discount through PayPal so the cost is $110 shipped within the U.S. for forum members. I haven't gotten around to listing them on eBay yet.

I also have some B4 lenses, the Polish adapters, and a Hirose cable / battery system to power the lenses. I would like to start a new thread to list what I have for sale but I'm not sure what's allowable / not allowable in this forum as far as listing "for sale" items goes. Thanks.

  • @oneday That's very pricey, plus there's the 2.5 f-stop drop. The GH2 plus its Ex Tele function is simply the best cam to use with these broadcast zooms

  • @ed_lee83 "The GH2 plus its Ex Tele function is simply the best cam to use with these broadcast zooms" 2.6x crop means 2.6x more visible noise and 2.6x deeper depth of field. It's very washed out and milky wide open in Ex Tele mode. It's better down to about f/4 but in low light it's better to use the built-in 2x extender. I shot this wide open with a 14x B4 lens and the built-in 2x extender, wide open.

  • @Turbodog Are u using that 800 pound MTF adapter? I agree ETC makes more noise but it's only evident for me past 400 ISO. Ok not the greatest for dark situations. Deeper DOF? Subjective and preferential. Milky wide open? Depends on the lens. Fortunately some of my broadcast lenses are mint so they're sharp wide open. But 800 pounds for that adapter, damn. I guess i'm really saying is that GH2 owners already have a good solution without buying that.

  • @ed_lee83 No, I'm using the $300 Polish adapter on the GH2. The $800 one is to spread the image across the Canon APS-C sensor and even then you still need to engage the 2x adapter. I don't think it's even for sale to the public yet.

I don't know the ISO on this footage because I was using Auto ISO but I know it went pretty high at times.

The depth of field is 2x and with 1:1 crop mode it's 2.6x -- so yeah not that different. (Actually compared to 2/3" camcorders, the depth of field is actually the same on full sensor and 1.3x with ETC !)

I not been able to use the B4 lenses wide open in 1:1 crop mode myself, mine all look washed out, especially bad at wide angles. Which broadcast lens models do you find to be the sharpest wide open in 1x / ETC ? Do you have any wide open footage to share?

  • @Turbodog I currently have Fujinon 7.5-105 f1.4, 10-140 f1.8 and 7.3-88 f1.4, all c-mount. The latter two have not been modified yet so I'm just waiting till they're all prepped for GH2 usage before I do test footage. I'm also still figuring out which hack is best for ETC. So far I'm eyeing Driftwood's Aquamotion. Watch this space!

  • @ed_lee83 OK I thought we were discussing B4 2/3" lenses. The ones I've tested, Fujinon, Canon, Nikon, all look milky at f/1.7 in the ETC mode. I'm not sure what the deal is because they were obviously intended to be usable wide open originally. The Fujinon 7.5-105 f1.4 sounds like a 1/2" lens. I bought one on eBay in B4 mount, a Canon 7-105mm 1.4, but the backfocus was wrong. It had a shorter flange distance than the 2/3" lenses & it didn't focus at all using the MFT adapter. I didn't think I could modify it so I sold it. I pretty much gave up on searching for the holy grail in c-mount lenses because almost all of them vignette on the full sensor. ETC mode is a nice feature but only the full sensor gives you the full latitude of dynamic range that the camera is capable of.

My goal right now is to find someone to produce a B4 to Canon EF adapter. Then I can use a Canon 2x tele-converter to provide full coverage of the 4/3 sensor. My tests have shown that a Canon 2x tele-converter improves the edge sharpness over the built-in 2x extender which wasn't originally designed to cover such a large sensor.

Of course it would have to be designed with precision accuracy to get the back-focus correct for infinity focus. If you know anyone who might have this capability please put them in touch with me via pm. Thanks

  • @Turbodog Damn you're right, everyone here's talking about B4 mounts, not broadcast zoom lenses in general. Sorry.

  • @ed_lee83 That's exactly what I was looking for. Same supplier as the MFT one. Thanks.

  • This video, shot with a Fujinon 14x 8.5-119mm f/1.7 lens was embedded in an eBay listing. Cameras used were the GH2 and AF100. It's sharp, and with the 2x extender engaged, it covers the entire sensor.

  • @balazer Yeah, that's me... my cover's been blown!! :-)

  • Then I am curious to know why you would sell such a supposedly nice lens. ;)

Actually the sharpness looks good to me, but I don't care for the overall look. I can't put my finger on why. Maybe the contrast is too low or there are aberations. I take it these lenses were for SD cameras.

  • @balazer Looks like he's got a mess of them! Probably duplicates....

  • Yes I have a number of them, plus the MFT adapters -- something I buy and sell. They were for SD video cameras but it is professional grade glass that still holds up quite well. With fixed aperture, parfocal zoom (stays in focus across the whole zoom range), step-less iris (no click stops) and macro. Plus you can power the zoom servo with the cable I made & the battery doubles as a 6400mAh external battery for the GH2. Not as sharp or with bokeh as nice as an SLR lens, but still you get a lot of versatility with these lenses. Sharpens up as you stop it down.

A nice solution to the problem of slow variable aperture, varifocus zooms without smooth mechanical zooming or step-less iris for shooting video.

  • My Chinese adapter just arrived. Tried some shots with my Fujinon B4-mount 10-120mm. Quite impressed. Easy to manipulate even though the servo does indeed sit at the bottom. [not unusably though, the W -T rocker switch is at the side; power the thing up with 12V and you could put your hand in from the top then under the strap, rocking the zoom with your thumb]. For some reason I have to use the back-focus ring with the ꝈMacro on it; I'm guessing the lens just needs to be collimated. Overall, I was struck more by its sharpness when compared to my Zenit C-mount 17-70 zoom.

  • @Roberto: I am interested in getting the same adapter do you have any pics of how your's mounted with the lens? Do you have any focusing issue with this adapter?

    Thanks

  • @spcamno No focusing issues other than mentioned. I'm quite happy to focus shots using the back ring for now; the quality is very good and I've also given a new lease of life to this lens just by adding a $100 adapter.

  • @Turbodog did you already try the B4 to Canon EOS adapter with your Canon extender? I'm very curious as I read that the adapter is a replacement for the EOS mount. I am really looking for a B4 to Canon FD mount adapter like the Bumki version from 2010. Do you know where to get it?

  • This was my solution. I started with an old broken Sony BVP-90. I modified the CCD assembly with a M4/3 adapter.. Since the CCD assembly is attached to the body it means that the camera only has to hold itself up, the lens is held up by the body. This was the cheapest way for me, especially since that HK adapter has the lens mounted sideways which makes it almost useless for handheld camera.. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a345/FW200/GH2cam1.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a345/FW200/GH2cam2.jpg

  • @FW200 wow.. off topic: how did you connect the viewfinder. Is it the HDMI output of the GH2?

  • Since its a SD Digibeta viewer I used a HDMI > Y/C converter and used the Y part to go into the viewfinder. Not the best solution available (would offcourse like a HD viewfinder) but I was on a budget :)

  • @FW200 what a gr8 setup you have, on the other side is there a sound recorder or what?

too bad that gh2 hdmi does not have output on other modes, just 24p

also you could connect the eng lens REC button from the hirose connector to the GH2 remote jack

  • Ive been very tempted to get a B4 ENG lens, the biggest draw back fro me is im always using faster lenses than a ENG in 2x can provide.. There arr adapters on ebay that are less than the 320 dolar blue ringed one that do provide adjustable rings so that the lens can remain level so you can use the zoom controls etc. and plenty of ways to power the zoom control also.. seems like a very good setup if you can deal with a f3.8 lens.. the parafocal and constant f stop are the good points however.. one other thing is I've seen some sample clips that the corners of the image were distorted to some extent,... seemed to be defendant on the model lens used.. I think this is a great setup, just can't justify 400+ or so for a old used lens and 200-250 for a adapter on something that some say the result is not so sharp images and limit me to f3.8 when I can get a ton of older faster primes that are tack sharp for less. But I'm still tempted to get a setup like this .. if I can score a cheap b4 lens I may spring for the adapter just for messing around, I have seen some footage from this setup that looked pretty good.. also I noted in a diffrent thread that the GFx sensors are slightly smaller than the GH2 and could make any slight corner image distortion more minimal and look good on GFx cameras since they arn't quite as sharp anyway.. If some ones looking for a full auto run and gun solution a eng b4 lens with doubler may be perfect combined with a GFx body.. but until we get full manual controls I'm not going to buy a b4 lens and the expensive adapter to try it. with that kind of money I can buy a couple nice fast primes.. maybe once I have my primes in order I'll venture down this ENG B4 road. but I would consider it a experiment and nothing more.

  • @Ebacherville

im always using faster lenses than a ENG in 2x can provide

A lot of ENG lenses are fast. My Fujinon is f1.7.

  • @Roberto with 2x extender (to fill the sensor) enabled it loses two stops and it goes to f3.4

@Ebacherville well the B4 setup is the ideal Run and Gun solution for the gh2, and we are all using the cheap old SD lenses and we hope that soon the second hand HD lenses will drop prices (something must happend, like TV broadcast standard goes to 2k or even more, I don't know),

soft corner issue is coming from that gh2 has the multi aspect sensor, so in the 16:9 modes the crop is actually 1.86 not 2, so we use the portions from the lens that are ment to be cropped, on the GF1 that is not an issue

    http://www.bmupix.com/display/ShowImage?imageUrl=/storage/post-images/GH2_sensor_aspect_ratios_1920_1.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1287002123798

the crossover eng lens will be the solution for the soft corners issue, but anyhow if you stop down a little bit the lens it goes away

    http://www.canon.com/bctv/faq/cross.html

  • here is the best priced adapter I've seen so far.. for one that is adjustable and allows you to get the lens correctly positioned. the really cheap ones would put the servo controlls on the bottom of the lens.. not really ideal http://www.ebay.com/itm/Adapter-MICRO-4-3-GH2-GF3-G3-GH1-AG-AF100-AF101-AF102-Mount-2-3-B4-Lens-/370593516398?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5649184b6e#ht_4439wt_1094

Same adapter with a mounting standoff for a extra $50 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Adapter-MICRO-4-3-G3-GH2-GF3-GF1-GH1-G1-E-P3-2-3-B4-Lens-w-TRIPOD-Mount-/370593463830?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5649177e16#ht_3586wt_1094

  • As for the crop and corner issues, yeah the GF2 GF3 have a smaller sensor size also, they have a bit softer sensor anyway, I feel the GF line would pair well. IF VK gets manual controls figured out these would make a great body for a B4 SD lens. I brought this up and have some sample images with a Cmount lens showing the difference of the crop on GF2 vs GH2 http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2710/gf2-sensor-is-slightly-smaller..-could-be-really-good-paired-with-a-b4-23-eng-with-doubler-lens.

  • @oneday My Fujinon doesn't even have a 2x extender. If you do use one - and you need the lens aperture wide open, you just use ETC mode. I don't see any problem - these lenses cope well with ETC.

  • I have been following this thread for a while and finally bought a Fuji b4 lens from ebay for my GH1. I still need an adapter, and @Ebacherville looks to have found the best one so far. Having a mount on the adapter is probably important if you don't have a rail system for support, which I don't. I was a local tv photographer for over 10 years, so I am looking forward to using one of these lenses again!

  • @oneday I can't follow you on the sensor sizes and the crossover lens. A 2/3" lens will have circle of good definition of 11 mm diameter, so with the 2x extender on it will be a 22 mm diameter. The GH2's 16:9 sensor imaging area has a 21,6 mm diameter (as it is a multi-format chip). That's within the circle of good definition of the lens, isn't it? So would the effect soft corner effect not be caused by the extender being built to output a 11mm image circle instead of 22mm. As I read on another forum: wouldn't this soft-corner problem be solved by using a photo-extender. So, did anybody see my m4/3 2x extender?

@Roberto in ETC mode you will lose the widest angles, don't you? As the GH2's ETC 2,6 crop factor results in a image diameter of 8,3 mm, which is a 1,3 crop factor compared to my ENG camera. So my 8x5,5 Funijon Argus wide-angle lens gives me only the same FOV as a 7,3 'normal' lens.

Maybe off-topic, but I couldn't find any other place to post: Yesterday I have tested a Angeniuex T15x8,3 lens with doubler. Both in ETC mode or normal mode with the 2x extender, I found that it has a sort of bleeding of white area's. Like in dream-scene's on tv. What could that be?

Another - kind of off-topic - question: did anyone test the 1/2" lenses on a GH2 in 1080 mode? Those should have a circle of good definition of 8 mm, so could work really well with the 8,3 mm diameter of ETC mode. It would give us access to a lot of cheap wide-angle lenses that might become obsolete for ENG use in the near future, and are already pretty cheap.

  • @DirkVoorhoeve my 8x5,5 Funijon Argus wide-angle lens gives me only the same FOV as a 7,3 'normal' lens

Yes, you got it. You may find you can use your lens in non-ETC mode at some focal lengths, too. And yes, it has also occurred to me that ETC mode uses the sweetest spot at the centre of a lens - (like when we use f8).

  • Mine, Fujinin Pegasus II is also 1.7

  • @DirkVoorhoeve I am saying that GH2 produce the 16:9 image from the different parts of the sensor rather than cutting upper and lower part of the 4:3 area, and the lenses without crossover on 2/3 sensors do not goes outside of the 4:3 borders, in this case we have the gh2 forcing the crossover but we do not have crossover lens, so the 16:9 image on 2/3 sensor will have the diameter of 9.9mm and with the doubler you have 19.8mm instead of 21.6mm needed for the gh2

that is how I figure it out, maybe I am wrong

  • @DirkVoorhoeve I did try the B4 to Canon adapter & was not satisfied with it. It does replace the mount on your Canon camera however I had trouble getting the mount off my 60D. You would have to buy a dedicated camera and just leave the B4 mount on there, you can't go taking your mount on and off all the time.

But the worst part was that it doesn't work with Canon Tele-Converters. I'm using the Kenko brand and the mount holes are different. After I re-machined the adapter to fit the Kenko mount holes, I found that on a tele-converter, the B4 lenses only focus to infinity at the long end of the lens. I spend a lot of time and money on the project and eventually gave up. :(

  • I don't think that the tripod mount from funkykoval2001 adapter looks as strong as the one from ciecio7. I have the ciecio7 mount in stock and will sell for $275 shipped within the U.S. If anyone is interested send me a PM.

  • I have the ciecio (polish) mount too, it's great and lets you mount the camera and lens with it's tripod mount. Just be aware that you can't use it together with the ownuser batterygrip.

@Turbodog. I was afraid that it wouldn't work, thanks for sorting that out. Saves me a lot of hassle. Have you tried to find the B4 to Canon FD mount adapter like the Bumki version from 2010?

@oneday For a true 4:3 lens the image circle diameter would be 11 mm. So at the introduction of 16:9, the image would indeed be cropped from a 4:3 sensor, while later on they started using 16:9 sensors that are cropped to 4:3 if needed. The crossover lens is a solution the FOV change from this cropping. But still, both the sensors have a native diameter of 11mm, so the image circle of all 2/3" lenses should be 11 mm, not 9.9mm. See this picture, it really helped me understand the difference between multi-format (same diameter on different aspect ratio's) versus cropping.

@Roberto, tried that, but as this lens didn't have a doubler it was impossible to use it in non-ETC mode. I guess you mean using it in non-ETC mode with a doubler, am I right?

  • As I said, my Fujinon 10-120 can be used without ETC, doubler or vignetting, at some of its longer focal lengths only. Not that it's of much use - it's there if you want it, using the rear macro-ring to adjust focus.

  • @DirkVoorhoeve I had an impression that GH2 has an oversized sensor so in 16:9 mode it goes away from 4:3 borders also the crop mode in 16:9 is 1.86, for me this is a logic explanation for the soft edges on B4 lenses used on GH2 on wide shoots, otherwise what could be the reason?

  • oneday: The camera has been modified since then. I recently added a Zoom H4 recorder to the mix as well, I will be running my audio through that and powering that from the anton bauer as well. Looking into an adapter cable from 3.5mm line to 2.5mm mic for the GH2. Sadly I didn't get the H4N model, just the two channel H4..

I might be able to get the lens remote for the camera working.. however I am allready using the port for the mic input.. Another option I've been thinking about is attaching some sort of headphone speakers on top of the GH2 so it captures the audio from the Zoom H4 for reference in the edit set. That would free up the mic/remote port so I could see if remote starting works..

The GH2 itself is powered by it's own battery (I could convert it with the DC thingie but I prefer to keep it under it's own power.. That way I can also shoot without powering on the rig..

  • This is a picture taken from a 1080p25 GH2 clip with extender off on a Fujinon A15x8. The 16:9 yellow markings are what you see when you put the extender on. The 4:3 markings are what you see on a 2/3" 4:3 Camcorder (in this case an old Philips/Thomson LDK-110 Interline Transfer CCD 4:3 DVCpro camera).

Position of the lens was the same in all 3 tests. image

  • The reason why B4 lenses appear quite soft in the corners is because those lenses are made to focus the light rays passing through the beam split filter on fron of the 3 CCD's block. On the oter hand, GH2 and all the other DSLR's use a single focal plane sensor. Using the ETC mode a B4 lens becomes parctically unusable wide open, you need to close down a couple of stops to get acceptable results. Engaging the 2X externder you get the same effect because the 2 stops loosing, however the extender adds some softness and makes CA look worst.

Mounting a B4 lens on a 4/3 camera is a compromise and has its downsides, but also some advantages, parafocal characteristics, usable ring for manual focusing, build quality, stepless aperture ring etc.

  • that makes sense for me "the extender adds some softness"

  • @FW200 very good picture! it would also be nice to have the same picture with ETC (no extender) so it's clear to all what the ETC crop-factor effect is on the field of view..

  • @FW200 if your good with electronics i think it should be possible to attach the output of your zoom to the camera's input? On the photo's you see the mic unit of the camera, it has a 4 cable connector you could solder a nice xlr plug to?

  • I prefer not to solder directly onto the GH2.. Everything I have done so far does not affect the operation of the GH2 in any way. I can take it out of the rig and throw on a kitlens and I have a normal GH2 again.

I will see about making some pictures with the ETC mode, I kinda forgot about that one..

  • Brave work, @DirkVoorhoeve !

Does it look like you could relocate the mic PCB to a shielded, balanced break-out box.[Balun] with XLR/headphone connectors, say attached to the tripod connector at the camera base?

  • @Turbodog I am interested to hear that the B4 to EOS adapter didn't work out for you with the Kenko 2x adapter. It sounds like there must have been an issue with the flange depth. Perhaps the Kenko ES mount on the extender is a different thickness to the camera one, in that case maybe it would work with shims or on a Canon extender?? I presume you tried playing with the backfocus adjustment on the lens.

Even though you couldn't get it focussing to infinity at the long end, did you get it working well enough to determine if the corner image quality was improved over using an internal 2x teleconverter in the B4 lens? I would imagine it should be

  • I've tested with a few more B4 lenses but with all I get a glow around highlights. It's at all apertures, and everywhere in the frame (not on corners only). Anyone else got the same problem / solution?

@Roberto Thanks for the link to the mod thread. We'll move this mic-idea there, shall we?

  • @DirkVoorhoeve do you use lens with built in extender?

  • Ive tested both. I found it gets better if i adjust the backfocus, but it doesnt disappear. Any suggestions?

  • @DirkVoorhoeve can you specify the lenses that you use?

  • A Canon IF+ J9Ax5.2B4 (with extender) and a Fujinon A12x10BRM-88 (model VCL-1012BY). Both are very recently revised, so it's not the lenses.

  • @DirkVoorhoeve wow thats bad, I also wanted to buy 9x5.4 but did't have the money.

  • @DirkVoorhoeve "I've tested with a few more B4 lenses but with all I get a glow around highlights."

That might be adapter ring with reflective "inside". I get this with FD 55 f1.2 as well when using cheap adapter ring. Stray light bounces off the edges of adapter barrel and strikes CMOS chip at weird angles, giving "halo".

Try coating the adapter ring with something non-reflective.

  • @Grunf he uses the ciecio adapter the same that I use, it is gr8 adapter and it is not that cheap

  • I use Canon B4 lens and didn't have problem with glow. If he has problems with glow with two different lenses, I suggest trying a coating on inner side of the adapter...

  • thanks guys. BTW: i've also had the same problem with a Angenieeux T15x8.3 AIF. I'll have a look at that soon and let you know!

  • Has anybody used the $99 adapter available as a PV special offer.

Does it align lenses pointing upwards? How much play did you experience .. that is, is it a nice tight fit?

How does it compare to the cecio?

  • @kavadni Earlier ones did have focus ring markings at the top, mine does, apparently fixed later. No play at all. Cannot compare to the Ceico.

  • I bought the polish adaptor to use with my GH2 and my Canon J9x5.2, got the best results using the 2x extender, need to do more testing though. One thing, nobody seems to have mentioned the fact that these lenses have super-smooth, variable speed zoom, I've made a living out of video using ENG 2/3" cameras, all of which use electric zoom, the reason I bought the adaptor was to enable me to use my 2/3" lenses and my matte box and filters. I would love to try a broadcast 2/3" HD lens to see if there's a difference... Does anyone have the wiring for the lens Hirose connector? Also the GH2 has a built-in speaker, has anyone had alook at the speaker inside the GH2? It would be nice to take a feed off this and connect it to a headphone amp...

  • I have a Canon J15x9.5b4 and I cannot get it to focus at all on my gh2. I tested it on a 2/3 camera and it focused great. I'm using 2x mode and ill attach a link to the adapter I'm using. If anyone has any suggestions or solutions I'd appreciate it. Thanks

  • @Roberto Is the P-V deal adapter compatible with Fujinon A14x8.5 BEVM lens? I remember reading that some adapters are not compatible with B4 lenses which has integrated servo zoom.

  • Guess not. Seems to be identical to this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/B4-to-micro-4-3-lens-adapter-Canon-Fujinon-2-3-Panasonic-AF100-GH1-GH2-Olympus-/170859098271

  • @Galvoguru, there is a "DC 12v to 6 Pin Hirose Cable" on eBay, not cheap at $63. Link here:

I have one on order.... Like you, I long for a variable speed, internal mechanism lens for live events. I am working on a killer tripod plate made of stainless steel right now.... Music Videos, here I come (again). Stand by.

  • @Petee28, is it possible the adapter is physically short enough to take it out of the 'back-focus' sweet spot? I will post the measurement of my adapter when I have it.

  • @AthenaProductionsNet Ok sound great. Thanks

  • An interesting comparison between the use of 2x extender and digital zoom on a GH1 camera with a B4 lens mounted on.

  • Hey all,

Most of you all use a GH2, but I would like to use a B4 2/3" lens on a Canon 600D. I already know of the ciecio7 adapter, but like Turbodog, I am not pleased with modifying the body. I thought about putting Macro tubes in between the two pieces. Unfortunately this means that I will lose infinite focussing and will only have very shallow depth of field at the front of the lens. I think the teleconverter of Turbodog shifted this shallow depth of field to the long end of the lens.

But then I read about FD to EOS adapters, using optical correction to make it able to use older FD lenses on EOS bodies. So my question is... would it be possible to take such an FD converter, and place the B4 mount of cieco7 in place of the FD mount, and keeping more focus distance?

  • would it be possible to take such an FD converter, and place the B4 mount of cieco7 in place of the FD mount, and keeping more focus distance

Image quality will be bad :-(

You can just get Panasonic and NEX body, not necessary GH2.

  • And what would happen if is screw the back Off an old kitlens, keeping the optical element at the back. And place the EOS ciecio adapter on there. Would that retain infinite focus without upgrading the image too much?

  • Thanks oneday, but I already know that pricey adapter. I am trying to think of a cheaper alternative

  • There's a new adapter @ eBay that sells for $179 and it's correctly oriented so it's suitable for lenses with handgrip/zoom rocker.

Wonder if P-V get's this for deals...

  • What worries me about these is that on some other auctions, it says they removed the tripod foot because it's too weak:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/B4-2-3-CANON-FUJINON-lens-to-GH2-G2-G3-E-P2-AF100-AF102-E-P3-micro-4-3-adapter-/360416729005?pt=US_Lens_Adapters_Mounts_Tubes&hash=item53ea82d7ad#ht_3534wt_1144

Same adapter as the one tonalt posted, just with a different alignment. They also direct you to the $300+ ones for "heavier" lenses. The Canon J13x9B4 I have is pretty damn hefty as is, heavier than my Nikkor 80-200mm F/2.8. With that mount, it'll be extremely front heavy with the featherweight GH2 on the opposite end.

I just got the cheaper version of the adapter in tonalt's post yesterday: http://www.ebay.com/itm/170859098271?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_1748wt_1025

The only difference is the location of the indent that the lens aligns to . If you want to use the lens handheld only, you can remove the tiny stopper screw on the MFT mount side, and it gives you full rotation once it's inserted into the mount. You just need to drill a hole to align the lens release for whatever orientation you need. The lens will still mount without the hole, but the camera will not display anything with the lens release depressed.

I was also thinking about just getting a random tripod collar and making a spacer to fit the B4 adapter. Super solid, vs 2 tiny screws on a removable tripod foot.

  • @BlueBomberTurbo I think your idea of a collar is excellent .. It would be good to be able to get something that fits a few adapters

  • I just picked up a super clamp with mounting holes at the end of each side: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007PMJVS8/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00

Thinking it might be able to clamp onto the adapter and mount to a QR plate. Arrives tomorrow. Chose this over a standard super clamp since it can mount directly to a tripod, instead of via a stud that can introduce play. I'll try both either way. Gonna give the lens a workout this weekend. :)

  • Another idea: http://axiaalloys.com/Roll%20Cage%20Accessories/Light%20Mounts/Universal%20Mount-%20Single%206mm%20Female%20Thread-%20Satin-Clear-Black

I measured the adapter size, and it's just a hair over 2". Something like the above would work extremely well, since it's solid billet aluminum. Just need to tap the 6mm hole on bottom to a standard 3/8" to work.

  • Got the clamp from Amazon. Too small. Even if I used a longer bolt to extend the opening, it wouldn't get a good grip.

In the meantime, got this as a backup, just in case: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GTPDAC/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00

And it works really well! Used it for 7hrs straight yesterday on a monopod. The lens didn't slip a mm. I had to invert the silver post to get it to sit right on the QR plate, but the entire clamp is as solid as can be. Even has a mount up top for something like a mic. You might want to put a bit of rubber on the round part, since it'll scrape the finish off the adapter. The other side has rubber already.

The video wasn't as steady as it could've been, being on a monopod, but I was shooting 720p60 at 1/500 for slow mo, so Warp Stabilizer should smooth it out nicely. I wanna try using it on a tripod, though I probably won't be able to use the zoom.

  • I ended up getting the ceicio adapter with the support, I can not fault it

  • I'm selling one that I purchased from calhounmonster on ebay. I've gotten more into the older FD lenses. It works incredible. I'm not a fan of the Extele mode or digital zoom. The lens I have has a doubler on it but it still lets great light in. Ebay = http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200830295332 Youtube test with B4 lens =

  • @mapoff, I love Anberlin! Readyfuels! Question: Do you know if the adapter will work fine with 1/2" B4 lenses?

  • @mapoff what lens you have? is it for sale?

  • The 1/2" bayonet mount has a shorter flange focal distance than B4. A B4 adapter will not work, though I'm told that the only difference between the actual mounts is the size of the pin.

    Here is a 1/2" bayonet to m43 adapter: http://en.foto-akcesoria.com.pl/index.php/shop/product?idproduct=308&productname=1-2-quot-mount-micro-4-3

  • I have the J15x9.5B Canon with the 2x extender. Its slightly out of focus on the edges as you can see in the previous video. Its great but I've gotten into the prime lenses and would get better use out of a 20mm. I did record a memorial recently with the B4 and it saved my day. I'm selling the adapter first. I don't want to sell the lens and then be stuck with an adapter.

1/2" B4 lenses will not work with a 2/3" adapter. The lens needs to be closer to the sensor for that. If you look at the bayonet is almost even with the sensor side of the glass. 2/3" sticks out a little past the bayonet.

  • By the way, inside the helicopter, it was shaking bad. Probably normal, first time up. I couldn't help the shake. Its hard to manage a camera that is about 14" long in a heli that is shaking, so sorry for the puke factor in the video.

  • I have an old B4 fujinon and I was thinking about investing in one of the adapters for the gh2, those of you who have used an old SD lens on the GH2 are you generally happy with the quality you can achieve with these lenses...I guess what I'm asking is, I am aware that these lenses are as sharp as the still lenses I'm used to, but are they sharp enough?

  • Matticusmaximus. I like the look. It has a documentary look in my opinion, but its a very unique and special look that I really like. The fact that you have a constant f stop all the way through is an advantage. Because these SD lenses are out the door their price is low. You'll have to decide on your own if they are sharp enough. There are plenty examples in this forum alone and below is another. Make sure you select 1080 and full screen.

  • Hi everybody,

    I'm a happy user of GH1+ciecio adapter+J14ax8,5B4 lens (34-476mm f/3,4 equivalent with extender enabled)

In my case, I bought ciecio7 adapter with tripod mount and I'm satisfied, although it has few minor problems. Worst problem is plate attach to tripod mount is too short for lenses with 2x extender, so I had to made a longest plate. Minor problem is that tripod mount is not rotable (camera mount yes) so you couldn't rotate grip (although is not in weird position).

But with this adapter and lens, you could get something like this:

    image

This rig is very similar to a lightweight ENG cam. I needed to make a 12V+shutter adapter box (below gh1) and haven't got a H4N to cam link (GH3 could do :D), but it's very handy. I use uber-cheap 12V 6800mAh ebay battery, which seems like a little V-Mount battery :D.

About quality, I'm recording weddings and other events with it without problems (2x extender enabled), although is not pinsharp definition. It seems more like HVX200 quality in 720p. It has some soft edges, because 2x extender is designed to 2/3" sensor. But it's very usable; GH2 users could use better. Here a example, extender enabled and 1600 ISO:

My next upgrade will be a GH3 to enable ETC and maybe a YJ wide-angle lens, because 34mm sometimes is a bit short, but YJ lenses are about 3000€ second hand. This setup (GH1, lens, adapter, electronics) cost about 1300€, very affordable.

  • Hi! Could some body send b4 to m43 adapter dimension on devolf@inbox.ru? Regards.

  • @Koitz_roller looks nice. The ciecio7 adapter tripod mount is same height as Panasonic AF100. How did you make the shutter box (tutorial video + shopping list would be great :). I guess it is the same for GH2

What do you mean with tripod mount is not rotatable? You can't rotate the lens' motor on a normal ENG camera either so the grip is on the right place... Or do you mean something else?

  • @DirkVoorhoeve shutter box is really a B4 cable adapter, but in a box :P. I think in ourforums there are some schematics, but quickly explained:

    • Buy a 12-pin female Hirose connector, a GH1/2 remote shutter (or some resistances and one 4-pole jack) and a 5.5 mm female barrel connector.
    • Hirose pins are: 1-Ret button, 2-REC button, 3-Ground, 6- +12V
    • Solder Hirose pins: 1 to remote shutter's half press terminal; 2 to remote shutter's full press; 6 to barrel connector's center pin; 3 to remote shutter's common and barrel connector's shield.
    • You can present in many flavours: in a split cable, in a box, in a compact connector... :D

You could buy an item like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-12v-to-12-Pin-Hirose-Cable-AF100-GH2-Power-B4-2-3-Fujinon-Canon-Nikon-Lens-/180954591335?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a21bbf067#ht_1723wt_1232 and add the shutter cable. It worths, because Hirose connector is not cheap.

I wanted to add some LM regulators to supply GH1 from 12V, send audio from H4N (but you couldn't use REC button, of course) and some tweaks, but with GH3 in mind and no time... Maybe to B4-box 2.0 I could make some tutorial ;).

About rotation question, sorry about my explanation, I'm not native english speaker. What I said is that MFT mount could rotate, but tripod and B4 mount are fixed together, so it has no sense to rotate MFT mount to acomodate B4 grip to your hand, because when you put in a tripod, camera body won't be leveled. In case your B4 lens has grip in weird position, you couldn't use it without rotate MFT mount and detach tripod mount (because is useless). Maybe you could make a drill in B4 mount to rotate lens in right position.

  • Good thing GH3 has both mic input and remote plug.. I wanted to do the same thing you did with a GH2, remote starting the camera with the lens through a remote plug, but I also wanted to record audio onto the camera... On the GH3 we will be able to do that finally :)

Then I can finally update my rig :D

  • And with the GH3 Fujinon A8.5x5.5 will not vignette severely as with the GH2. With the GH3 crop factor in 16:9 mode is 2.18x and thus fully (or almost fully) covered engaging the 1.7x extender on that lens. All the other lenses with 2x doubler will loose about 18% at wide end, though.

  • Anybody knows the outer size/diameter of the B4 mount?

  • @ valdi99 I think it's 42mm. Check the last photos of my ebay auction here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/281035008252?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

  • @CFreak - thank you for such a speedy reply.

  • I made a couple of YouTube videos, one showing a spare zoom grip in action using an adapter and external 12V battery, and one showing a lens that I have for sale.

The one about my lens shows the affect of the power zoom and also shows the resolution capabilities as I zoom in on one of my paintings to reveal the texture of the canvas.

    Hope they are informative!

  • Questech, Hello! I also shoot with Fujinon previous model and I want to ask you as an expert on this subject. what lens do you have on contrast and quality Fujinon B4 or B4 Canon and something that is better extender 2 can be retrofitted, or use the built-in lens extender. thank you!

  • Sorry for bad ENGLISH . The lens does have a bit shading in the corners.Mout with adapter, manual production, which is mounted on extender 2x CANON. I have photographed a f5,6 - 8.

  • Good job, results everyone, Question, what is the widest angle you can go without significant vignetting?

  • So would I be right in thinking that a built-in extender is pretty much essential for using a B4 lens with an AF101, what with there being no Ex-tele mode?

I'm looking at Fuji lens that has the suffix 'BRM' - there's no 'B' in Querty123's otherwise helpful guide, but I'm guessing that without an 'E' it has no extender - does that make it a no-go for use with an AF101, or would that depend on other factors?

  • "B" is Fujinon designation for B4 mount; a "BRM" suffix indicates a B4 lens without extender. On the AF101 you need a lens with an extender built-in or, in alternative, you can buy a stand alone B4 extender: Fujinon model is AE20B 1 or 2 (the latter has back focus adjustment incorporated). Canon model is called X2.0-G2

  • Hi, after borrowing for a certain time the Eng lens of a friend ( I decided to buy one for myself ) i took a Fuji x12 1.7 10-120mm it is the BRM version so no extender and it seems i have a problem to close focus ( i can really get a sharp image form 120mm and far away ( its the missing extender that give me problem, ) so any advice on an extender I should buy ? ( M4/3 to M4/3 since i ll have the adaptator already from B4 to M4/3)

  • What's the minimum focus distance of that lens? 1 m? You probably just need to adjust the lens's back focus. An extender doesn't change the minimum focus distance. Not having an extender is not what's causing your problem.

The only Micro Four Thirds teleconverter is the Olympus MC-14, which only works with a couple of Olympus lenses.

What camera are you using? If you use the GH2/3/4 in 1080 ETC mode, you don't need an extender. If you really want an extender, buying a different B4 lens with a built-in extender is the cheapest solution, but I don't recommend it because the image quality isn't great when you put a 3-CCD prism-type lens on a camera without a prism.

Here's a proper optical converter with very good image quality: http://www.abelcine.com/store/HDx2-B4-PL-Mark-II-Optical-Adapter/

  • @balazer hi and thanks for your answer, the minimal focus distance actually is more like 8 to 10 meters

  • @ rastatugan. I would check to make sure the macro adjustment - probably the ring closest to the B4 mount is not causing the issue. This ring can effect the near or far focus. If you don't want to get a proper optical adapter to compensate for the lack of a prism with a single chip camera, I would find one with a 2x extender and shoot with it engaged and then stop the lens down to down f2.8 or higher. This will help with shooting at the wide end of the lens making it less cloudy and soft wide open at the wide end. If you shoot stopped down at the long end of the lens, these can be really nice if you find a good newer version of the lens.

  • I would love some advice on this lens, and attaching it to my BMPCC or my Canon mount Metabones adapter!

  • Hi,

I'm new here and ran across this thread concerning ENG lenses on a DSLR.

I'm in process of building a another rig and in researching the difference between the quality of the Canon J series and YJ series lenses I've learned something I'm not sure is clarified here.

I have both and was trying to determine which lens I wanted to use and spoke with Canon directly about the differences.

Both lenses have the exact same quality glass and the only difference is in the material used on the outer focus, zoom, and aperture rings where the teeth are.

The J series rings are machined out of billet aluminum and the YJ series rings are injection molded out of ABS polymer, similar to what most other modern day lenses use, including Canon's products.

Other than that there is no difference...just my 2 cents!

    Jerry

  • @Jerry_Hunt

    Thanks for useful info.

  • You bet Vitaliy...it's my understanding talking with Canon that this was done in an effort to reduce weight, not quality!

  • Back in 1999, Canon was advertising pro grade YJ series saying that in terms of quality, differences between Pro and Broadcast is "barely discernible to viewing audience". One of the reason (if not the main) why broadcast lenses are more expensive is because they are aimed at the big tv networks with big budget. Another form of capitalism distortion...

  • Fujinon ZA17x7.6 on GH5

    Fujinon XA17x7.6 on GH5

  • Nice looking footage!

I've got my B4/EF Canon 5D rig about 80% finished. I'm still waiting on my camera cage, which is on a slow boat from Korea. This will give me something to mount a handle on that will serve as the mounting base for my Zacuto Z Finder and microphone.

I'm currently using a 1.4 teleconverter in conjunction with a B4 to EF adapter that gives me a S35 image on the sensor, which is the same as the Canon C100 - C300 when using the same lens and adapter setup. I found though, by using a 2X teleconverter I can cover the whole 5D full frame sensor with no vignetting.

I designed and machined the camera sled's components myself. The front lens mount is machined out of 6061 T6 aluminum and mounts between the focus and zoom rings, using two small screws on the mid bottom of the lens.

With two 24" carbon fiber rods it's really light weight at 12.15 lbs, with a very low center of gravity centered mid shoulder, which makes it balanced and easy to maneuver without shaky footage at full zoom.

We've got a two day shoot coming up where we are going to put the camera with lens through it paces, and I'll attach the finished video here after post.
