HDMI Monitor Hack Question

After digging through the forums, I'm having a hard time figuring out the HDMI issue.
My question is - can I successfully record 1080p24 to a card while shooting with an HDMI monitor? I've read accounts of the card output being unusable when the HDMI port is active.
