Capitalism: Apple and Facebook tell truth about themselfs
    • Apple on Thursday in a letter addressed to nonprofits, including Human Rights Watch and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, saying it doesn't hoover up detailed user data to sell to third parties. Facebook takes a "very different approach," Apple said.

"Not only do they allow the grouping of users into smaller segments, they use detailed data about online browsing activity to target ads," Apple's Senior Director of Global Privacy Jane Hovarth wrote in the letter.

"Facebook executives have made clear their intent is to collect as much data as possible across both first and third party products to develop and monetize detailed profiles of their users, and this disregard for user privacy continues to expand to include more of their products."

Facebook hit back hard in a statement sent to Business Insider, accusing Apple of abusing its dominance to benefit itself.

It also told that Apple sent the letter as a "distraction" from privacy concerns that emerged last week after a series of Mac computers had difficulties opening apps.

"The truth is Apple has expanded its business into advertising and through its upcoming iOS 14 changes is trying to move the free internet into paid apps and services where they profit," Facebook said.

"As a result, they are using their dominant market position to self-preference their own data collection while making it nearly impossible for their competitors to use the same data. They claim it's about privacy, but it's about profit," the statement read.

"This is all part of a transformation of Apple's business away from innovative hardware products to data-driven software and media."

Capitalism: Mordor elites are secret socialism lovers
    • The Kremlin has two state agricultural enterprises. Agrocomplex "Voskresensky" located along the Kaluga highway and the agrocomplex "Nepetsino" along the Kolomenskoe highway. They grow organic products for the Kremlin and parliament. Both these farms are owned by the state and there are no private entrepreneurs in them and they work not for profits, only goal is to keep best organic food quality. Both management and workers receive a solid standard salary and sometimes small bonuses, they don't have any fines and penalties. A private trader needs to get as much profit as possible and this pushes him to all sorts of adventures in growing livestock, vegetables, fruits, and all kinds of greenery. But here it is not the case. Instead these two farms have specialized laboratories who check quality and lack of any optimization for each batch of production.

So, for their own food elites are smart enough to keep horrible and unacceptable socialism around. They are not fans of free market.

Bad design: Intel NUC M15 Laptop Kit
    • image

M15 will likely sell for between $1,000 and $1,500.

The laptop includes an 11th-gen Core i5-1135G7 or i7-1165G7 processor with Iris Xe integrated graphics, and a standard or touchscreen cheap sRGB or below 15.6-inch 1080p low brighness IPS display. You can opt for 8GB or 16GB of RAM, and you won't be able to upgrade the memory later.

The 73 watt-hour battery should provide up to 16 hours of use on a single charge (in Intel fantasies).

Prototypes have dual Thunderbolt 4/USB 4 Type-C ports (either of which you can use for charging), a pair of USB-A 10Gbps ports, an HDMI port and a 3.5mm headphone jack, company saved on SD card reader around $10. It weighs 3.64 pounds and it's 0.59 inches thick.

Most importantly system also includes an LED light bar that glows blue when you're using the Windows Alexa app. Yes, seriously.

Intel approach to all such typical designs is horrible, as people they use can't do anything but copy and paste (as they normally rely on cheap taiwan vendors to do actual work). Producing subpar product where big price is paired with horrible materials and bad PCB design.

Capitalism: Avia cargo collapse amid huge demand
    • According to the report, the volume of air cargo transportation in 2020 decreased by more than 37.2%. This has led to a reduction in the number of involved cargo aircraft to 22.6%. Just imagine - now about one of the four cargo planes is taking off into the air, and all the rest are laid up. This situation was also caused by difficulties with logistics, which rests on quarantine measures.

Freight operators have found a way out in filling passenger areas with cargo on ordinary commercial liners. By the way, charter flights do not allow the use of aircraft usable area, since they are not transparent for logistics. This year, according to Reportlinker, the transportation of goods by passenger aircraft will take away about $ 15.5 million from cargo airlines. For obvious reasons, transportation by liners will cost significantly more than transportation by large cargo vessels, which can lift up to 130 tons of cargo at a time.

Finally, the restriction of air traffic and the increased demand for medical cargo allows carriers to raise prices and customers to agree to onerous terms.

This is how capitalism and greed are working. Owners of all this standing cargo liners must be repressed and all fleets turned into public property.

Apple: Why other companies should't be afraid of M1
    • image

Below are small results of talks with two Apple developers (who are not CPU architects, so..).

What is Apple custom LSI and its cores? And it looks nice in benchmarks and certain apps and bad in other stuff?

Apple is directly moved mobile class, smartphone optimized chip and it initially look nice for inexperience reviewer.

May be Apple is made astonishingly good architecture? Some ARM breakthroughs? Nope, zero.

It is best ARM cores, but it is not some miracle.

Apple managed to do only one thing - they have most extreme approach to shutting down dynamically parts of CPU and GPU cores.
At any given moment almost 90% of parts of LSI that are not working right now are being shut down. It was not important much at 2001 or 2015 even.
But in 2020 it is super important, as leaks in 7nm or 5nm are very high. The smaller the process - the bigger are leaks during idle periods.
Another part is using low frequencies and totally different TSMC process to that AMD plans to use. Such approach is bad for any scaling, but it allows to reduce leaks further by using all things optimized for low power mobile chips. Developer told that version of LSI made on modern 5nm high performance process has consumption from 1.5 to 2x more having only slightly better performance (this will be targeted to premium new models).

Apple made lot of interesting smart things, like adding excessive execution units into CPU and GPU and shutting down part of them as soon as they heat up, moving all execution to distantly located execution units. And they shut them also as soon as they heat up and move all things back to cooled units. Most fun is that most time Apple do not know real local temperatures (as you have limit on sensors amount and it is big inertia) and use special estimates for this.

Huge role also plays their software team working at compilers and libraries. As they managed to offload lot of burden from LSI design into better quality code (but this is very small low level part).

Also big amount of people (up to 5000 top level coders) worked on benchmarks and leading apps optimizations adding at least 25% to numbers that we see now in many reviews.

Rumors are that Apple compiler sometimes cheat by offloading certain things into GPU and not telling this (including custom benchmarks modifications).

Another rumor is that all (100%!) modern Apple LSI cheat in single core tests actually using more than one core on chip level. This can mean also shared execution units and some other shared logic that is actually absent in real core as you move into multicore complex task.

Using DRAM on chip, as well as certain GPU solutions went against two important engineers who left during last 14 months making loud internal conflict (they showed long term consequences).

Capitalism: Microsoft Edge or why monopolies won't stop
    • Microsoft is adding a new coupons feature to its Edge browser today. Coupons and promo codes will appear inside Edge as an alert when you’re shopping online, and they can be automatically applied to a basket when you’re ready to check out. The coupons feature also includes price comparisons, so if you’re shopping online, Edge can surface different retailers that might offer items at lower prices.

Microsoft introduced price comparisons in Edge just weeks ago as part of its Collections feature, but this new coupon experience goes even further. It’s part of a big push by Microsoft to position Edge as the browser for online shopping, but the comparisons and coupons only work for US users of the browser right now.

It is 100% case as allowing software giants to do that they are doing is just utter dangerous.

All of them must be stripped of browsers and search engines with them becoming fully public assets.

Capitalism: Youtube to start openly rip small video channels
    • The video-sharing website has updated its Terms of Service, and it includes a new section that gives it the right to monetize videos from channels not big enough to be part of its Partner Program. That doesn’t mean new creators can start earning from their videos right away, though — YouTube said in a forum post explaining the changes to its ToS that non-YPP members won’t be getting a cut from those ads.

To become eligible for the YouTube Partner Program, a creator has to be living in a country where it’s active, has to have 4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months and has to have over 1,000 subscribers. YouTube only used to run ads on videos from channels that don’t meet those criteria under special circumstances, such as if the channel was previously a YPP member.

Next will go the watch hours and subscribers limits rise. Just wait few months. Step by step.
