In Sony case it is SLT tech that limits, hence the reason of abandoning it.
Well what's especially interesting is that Nikon is tweaking their Sony made snsors to perform better than Sony does for their on DSLr's.
Again, all latest Sony cameras are really SLT :-) except NEX.

For example, the DxOMark score of 89 of the Nikon's own sensor found in D4, NC81366W, is lower than 95 of the Sony's sensor in D800, despite of ≈ 1.5 times smaller physical pixel size of the D800 sensor than of the D4.
