World's Biggest Electronic Manufacturer Bites the Hands that Feed it
  • Foxconn buys 9 percent stake in GoPro for $200 million (Engadget)

Hon Hai Precision, better known as Foxconn, is already the world's largest electronics manufacturer. Chances are if you've got a laptop, console or smartphone it was assembled in one of the company's many Chinese factories. The giant has also gotten quite cozy with Sharp, with an eye towards investing directly in the LCD market, though no deal has been made official. Now the company is dipping its toes in the camera business, by purchasing an 8.88-percent stake in GoPro for $200 million.

Hon Hal (better known as Foxconn, or the iPhone's manufacturer), could become a big retail name brand just any time it has a mind to do so - ang go on to out-compete Sony, Samsung or even Apple.

Watch this space. The Tiger hasn't roared, just given a low-throated rumble.

  • It is completely wrong view.

FoxConn is specially made (in their current form) and fully controlled corporation that is doing certain job for other fully controlled corporations. So, this is just money transfer made by request, as, most probably, GoPro needs some resources.

Known as the manufacturer of Apple iPhones, Sony Playstation and other popular electronic devices, Foxconn will also take a seat on the GoPro board. That seat will be occupied by Foxconn founder and billionaire CEO Terry Gou, called the investment a “great opportunity” in a press release.

  • And this will have a huge effect on the GoPro public listing, reported to be sometime this year. Terry Gou is just getting in early....

  • @Rambo

From here it looks like the one investment he can make without angering his other big clients since GoPro has no real competing product lines - [being produced by his name-brand clients].

  • since GoPro has no real competing product lines.

Yet. The GoPro brand name is very well established, i think a big part of the that 2bil figure reflects that, although their sales for 2012 have been estimated around 500mil.

  • Foxconn Sees Strategic Boost From GoPro Camera-Maker Investment (Bloomberg)

“We need image-capture technology which would complement our existing display technology,” Simon Hsing, a spokesman for Foxconn’s flagship Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (2317), said by phone today. “We fully expect to participate in their strategy and future development.” Woodman Labs is profitable and Foxconn expects it will have the opportunity to become a supplier for its GoPro equipment, Hsing said.

Foxconn hopes the investment will let it tap into the burgeoning market for content creation (IT World December 21, 2012)

Taiwanese manufacturing giant Foxconn Electronics said it could integrate more camera features into its devices after making a US$200 million investment in a U.S. company that makes cameras for action sports enthusiasts.

...The company foresees the consumer tech industry moving toward more products capable of "content creation", and expects GoPro can help Foxconn better tap into this market, said Foxconn spokesman Simon Hsing.
