Interesting. EL lights have been around for a while though, and have never really taken off. I wonder what will make this one any different? I was at the hardware store the other day and they had taken all of their LED lights off the shelf and put them in a bin. They were clearance at 75% off. Apparently nobody bought LED lights so the stores were getting rid of them.
As for this startup, they mostly bring media attention,. They want to make some modified OLED like things, with very low light efficiency.

You don't know it.
I hope this new FIPEL gains traction, it would be good to have another option out there. And yes, the manager had to come do the 75% price reduction and I asked him why they were selling all of their LED bulbs. He told me that they sold very few of them over the years and the company made the decision to get rid of them. These were the Sylvania HD bulbs. I actually really like them, the color is very nice and close to halogen. I suppose the original 50$(each) price was too much.
While I don't intend to take this too off topic continuing to talk about LEDs here, to finish the story I bought a couple of the "standard" sylvania versions (not the HD) and those had a very strange yellow-ish glow to the light. It was slightly disorienting. The HD version did not have this. I suspect that the price and the quality of light from the earlier generation of LED had put people off from purchasing them before the newer HD versions had come out.
