GoPro on a balanced Pole
  • I made myself a 3metre pole with a mount on the end for a GoPro HD Hero 2, at the other end I added another shorter pole at 90degrees with the two balance weights because I found that it rotated in my hand too easily.

Here are some results with me running flat out to keep up with some indoor flying:

  • Pretty damn smooth. Would be intersting to attach a GoPro camera to one of those planes and get footage outdoors and indoors that way. I'm not too familiar with those planes, but do you think that would work?

  • Those planes are very light weight and pretty much only for indoor flying. I doubt they would support a GoPro.

  • @matt_gh2 and @B3Guy, Here is the plane I use for the flying shots:

It supports the GoPro really well and it still flies nice a slow, which is helpful. On a still day outside its absolutely fine. Because it has such a gentle motor there's almost no vibration.

The planes in the video will take the Flycam One and Two style cameras but the footage you get back is jerky and often has vibration. The Flycam isn't super quality. The planes notice the extra weight too - they get a bit stodgy on the controls.

And ... all because of PV I found the new firmware for the GoPro HD Hero2 -- and it is absolutely easier to deal with. If you view the vid at 720 apart from youtube compression your seeing what came off the camera.

  • @andyharris Thanks - great info re the plane. I may have to get one and GoPro for aerial shots. How high can those planes go?

  • @matt_gh2 A normal 2.4GHz TX/RX will work until the plane is out of sight. In the UK we have a height ceiling for models of 400ft or 122 metres.

I'm looking forward to the BVE show early next year to pickup a bargain GoPro HD Hero 3 !!

  • @andyharris which bundle would you recommend for go pro 3? I have no clue about planes but for this price is worth to try:) thanks

  • Very cool. I'm definitely jumping on this. Thanks

  • @konjow -- I don't know enough about the 3 yet. Myself I have the water proof housing and a skeleton housing for the end of the pole. For indoor planes I just use the camera and some foam to hold it in place. For outdoor places I use the skeleton housing.

I do know that the waterproof housing is useless for proper underwater shots - you need to change the lens on the front for that.

@matt_gh2 Thought you might like to see my initial tests. A motorcycle is easier to follow than an indoor plane. I'll take some pics of the Fuz on the plane and where I cut holes for the camera later. In the mean time:

  • @andyharris Nice - motorcycle shots look smooth. Do you have any outdoor footage with camera attached to plane as it flies? Would be cool to see. Thanks for posting.

  • @andyharris The link which you past there http://robotbirds.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=2025 it looks budget and may be fun even to just try out. I asked which bundle would you recommend or which you did use with GP2 because there are different options and prices. If works with GP2 it will works with GP3 cos is lighter. As matt_gh2 Id love to see some footage. thanks

  • @konjow I used the WildBee bundle, and its been good for three years now! Which is a bit of an achievement for indoor flying, which has a fair bit of 'contact'. I have flown it outside on calm days -- its fine.
