HDR video ideas and solutions for a new sensor design and merge two streams on camera
  • Vitaly, please take a look at this:

The big improvement GH2 can get in a next GH3 or GH4 model is enable a HDR function for video. Not the cartoon look HDR, but the improved latitude dynamic range HDR

The best solution would be to get two video streams from the same sensor at the same time, with same shutter speed for both, probably using different iso for adjacent pixels, half pixels at low iso, half pixels at high iso, and the camera merge the two streams into one video mts file. or to use same iso with a sensor designed to have half pixels in a small size and half pixels in biger size. Or to combine some pixels like the idea on the link below. This method would be very better than the Magic Lantern HDR solution for Canon cameras using two different exposures in different consecutive frames.

Please take a look at these solutions showed in these links so you can help Panasonic to develop a HDR video solution for M43 cameras.

http://www.fujifilmexr.com (skip intro and go to EXR modes explained / dynamic range)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_CCD (the versions of HDR sensors developed by fuji, nice sensors designs)

http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/News/Press/201201/12-010E/index.html (scroll page down to see hdr video sensor concept)

Hope this can be done some day, it is the big step forward!!!

I really suggest to read some serious sensor design books, talk with professionals before proposing and discussing such things.

As otherwise it turns in pointless flame between people who use terms they do not understand fully.

  • @Vitaliy_Kiselev

Sorry, I am not a hardware expert, and i do not want to be...

But I think the way I explained that was good enough for you to get the idea...

Now it is up to you to work with panasonic to develop it...

  • Now I got it... The Big thing was just an april 01 joke... kkkkkkkkkk

  • So the HDR idea cannot be developed by Vitaliy because it is a hardware development, not a firmware development, and the big thing was just a joke... but maybe panasonic guys are reading this forum so, with some hdr solutions coming around maybe they start to think about it, if they are not doing it right now...

  • @Vitaliy - It has been probably discussed before but i cannot find it anywhere. If so, please redirect me if you're that kind. -Maybe stupid question BUT: is it possible to hack GH2 the same way ML does on two streams solution? I mean not in video mode but in burst mode? Less res stills in 48p would be quite enough for two ISO streams (24 each)... Is it nonsense idea?

    Thanks.
