Capitalism: MOSFET prices to follow DRAM and NAND
  • Global supply of MOSFET chips fallen short of demand in the second half of 2017 as a result of a growing number of MOSFETs for new CPU platforms. Supply for PC and consumer electronics applications fall short of demand during the rest of 2017.
Strong MOSFET demand will buoy revenues at Advanced Power in the third quarter, which are expected to grow over 15% sequentially.

  • Major MOSFET suppliers have extended delivery lead times to 13-18 weeks from 8-12 weeks as the supply of MOSFET chips has become tighter on rising demand for electric cars, according to industry sources.

With demand for car-use electronics remaining strong, the overall supply of automotive MOSFET chips for the first half of 2018 will still be 30% short of demand, the sources estimated.

As major MOSFET chipmakers have allocated more of their available capacities for auto electronics applications, their supply to the PC, notebook and mobile device markets is constrained. As a result, their smaller competitors have been benefiting from a ramp-up of demand for these traditional end-market applications, the sources observed.

  • The supply of some IC parts and components, including wafers, passive components, and DRAM, MOSFET and NOR flash chips, will remain tight in 2018 due to the absence of capacity ramps by major suppliers, according to industry sources.

  • The supply of MOSFET chips has become sufficient in the second quarter as international IDMs have moved to scale up their output for entry-level and mid-range devices,

IDM vendors have seen clear visibility of orders for their MOSFET chips through the end of 2018.

  • Taiwan-based MOSFET suppliers are mulling raising their quotes to reflect rising silicon wafer and foundry costs, as they are expected to secure more foundry capacities to support their shipments to customers, according to industry sources.

Foreign MOSFET suppliers have moved to adjust upward their quotes since the second half of 2017 in line with hikes on silicon wafer and foundry quotes, but their Taiwan counterparts including Sinopower Semiconductor, Advanced Power Electronics, Excelliance MOS and Niko Semiconductor have remained conservative about raising quotes for their MOSFET chips
