    Microsoft is considering a multibillion-dollar revamp of its headquarters campus in Redmond, seeking to foster more collaboration among employees.

    The potential updates would be aimed at shifting away from private offices toward the more open-plan work spaces that are favored by today’s technology companies, said the people. Microsoft has already renovated some of its buildings to add open work space in place of private offices.

    It could add amenities such as restaurants, retail spaces and public artwork, in addition to apartments to house visiting employees and interns, they said.

    It will also help to make another round of layoffs.

    Google got it wrong. The open-office trend is destroying the workplace.

    While employees feel like they’re part of a laid-back, innovative enterprise, the environment ultimately damages workers’ attention spans, productivity, creative thinking, and satisfaction. Furthermore, a sense of privacy boosts job performance, while the opposite can cause feelings of helplessness. In addition to the distractions, my colleagues and I have been more vulnerable to illness. Last flu season took down a succession of my co-workers like dominoes.

    Companies never actually though that open space is good. But it allows to cram more Indian guys into same space :-)
