detailed guide to build a hackintosh optimised for video editing.

I find only one reason to run hackintosh - use new FCP.
And speaking of this I think that AMD cards could be better solution, not starting to talk about outdated CPUs suggested.

Really nice site ! (and guide). There is a link to an interesting video comparison between 24/120/mixed 24&120 fps :

  • if you want to run avid, fcp and premiere on one machine, then you have to run a mac or hackintosh.
but if you don´t need fcp, then go for a win pc.

is anybody interested in lightworks? or is anybody here working on lightworks beta?
    http://www.lightworksbeta.com/
  • It is very interesting.

I noted - "Real-time, hardware accurate video vectorscopes and waveform monitors" btw.
But it looks like no BlackMagic support yet.
Also do not see AVCHD listed in I/O formats list. It allows to edit native H.264, right?
  • a moderator wrote about the codec support.

Quicktime H.264 (playback performance dependant on CPU – transcode recommended)
Quicktime AVCHD (playback performance dependant on CPU – transcode recommended)

So container has to be mp4 or mov .mts doesn´t work.

but i would prefer to transcode avchd or h.264. you can batch it overnight. i edit with DV proxys or prores 422 LT for basic editing. if the timeline is locked, i go for a lossless or uncompressed codec.

  • >So container has to be mp4 or mov .mts doesn´t work.

In this case it explains with this see freeware and open source.
Managment decided that product is doomed (in the long term) and wanted to make as much as possible out of it.

    >but i would prefer to transcode avchd or h.264. you can batch it overnight

I don't like it and won't do it. FCP guys still forced to do this :-)
  • I am not a FCP guy. I can´t decide which editing software I hate more. I worked so many hours on different NLEs, and I often had to curse.

AVID is solid and has got the fastest trimmode, but transcoding sucks. But there are much more effects and plugins for premiere and final cut e.g. Neat Video.

Premiere has the best native H.264 support, but if you have to work with tapes like Digital Betacam, you are fucked.

FCP is great, but media management specially render datas are a total mess. One wrong click and FCP forgets the linking.

I knew there are more NLEs but these I used a lot.
  • You seems expirienced in all editors :-)

I work only with AVCHD cams so, for me it is simple.
  • Premiere is a good NLE as long as you don´t have to use tapes. And in combination with After Effects and Photoshop, it is awesome.

I am curious about FCP X and Lightworks, because both GUIs seem to be clean and simple. And that´s very important for me for the creative part of editing. I want to focus on story and characters and not on buttons. The thousand methods of doing a cut in FCP or Premiere take sometimes my mind off things. I waste my time of thinking about the fastest way to do a cut.
  • It would be nice to have more and cheaper gpus for mac.

About nofilmschool : they run a very enlightening blog as well.
  • @Vitaliy_Kiselev Curious why you think only reason to run hackintosh or (Mac in general?) for video is new FCPX. What's your thinking here? Not trying to criticize, but to understand. Thanks
