Magix, known as a manufacturer of audio and photo editing programs such as Magix Video deluxe and - since the acquisition of Sony in 2016 - also Vegas Pro , is insolvent. On March 1st, the Berlin district court opened the self-administration proceedings after Magix had already filed for bankruptcy in December. According to the press release, business operations will continue without restrictions - the aim is to restructure the entire company by selling it to an investor, which should be completed in the next 2-3 months.

Difference between Magix Vegas Pro and Video Pro https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/21200/difference-between-magix-vegas-pro-and-video-pro Wed, 26 Dec 2018 08:02:52 +0000 RoadsidePicnic 21200@/talks/discussions Recently got involved in deploying a very small institutional communication team. The hardware available to video editing is mostly a couple of low profile sandy bridge i7 and common RAM witch would be added 1050ti. Target source is GH5 (not defined).

Searching for some editors with FX suite that reported to run OK on these specs, decided to contact Magix about their Vegas Pro and Video Pro software.

The reply came:

  • Video Pro is a semi-professional software to advanced videographers
  • Vegas Pro is a professional software to production companies

So, ok it does give the idea of how the company place the two, but would the people here on the forum know about the effective difference of the software? What are the main things that set them apart in terms of function and integration?

Comparison of Vegas Pro 16 and DaVinci Resolve Studio 14 for Producing HDR Videos https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/20434/comparison-of-vegas-pro-16-and-davinci-resolve-studio-14-for-producing-hdr-videos- Fri, 14 Sep 2018 07:06:19 +0000 markr041 20434@/talks/discussions I created a 4K HDR10 video from each software package using the same clips, shot in Slog2.

Vegas Pro produced an HEVC HDR10 video playable on any HDR TV and playable on Windows 10 computers capable of HDR (I have a 10bit, HDR monitor).

Resolve creates an Avid 10bit 4K HDR video with the correct HDR10 metadata. It plays on no hardware of any kind in HDR and does not play in HDR using any software I know about, but the file is recognized by YouTube as HDR. Resolve has no HEVC or even H264 10bit render options!

For the exact same HDR10 4K video the Vegas-produced file size was 408Kb. The Resolve-produced HDR10 4K video from the same clips was 8.6GB. Yes almost 9 gigabytes versus half a megabyte! The Vegas Pro video took 25 minutes to render, the Resolve video 7 minutes (because the file is only lightly compressed).

Here is the Resolve version:

Here is the Vegas version:

I do not see much of a difference. The Resolve video is brighter (more DR) because I was able to use the scopes to max out the DR.

I think I understand the scopes (designed specifically for HDR) and the controls in Resolve. But I understand neither in Vegas in ACES for HDR, yet (I have mastered them outside ACES and in SDR).

These HDR10 videos were both made essentially only using the built in (ACES or ResolveCM) transforms from Slog2 to HDR10 for 1000nits screens with little tweaking by me, except for increasing the DR a bit in Resolve.

EDL_Convert: Workflow Developement for Sony Vegas Pro - DaVinci Resolve https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6238/edl_convert-workflow-developement-for-sony-vegas-pro-davinci-resolve- Sun, 24 Feb 2013 10:30:51 +0000 tida 6238@/talks/discussions Motivation:

Davinci Resolve Lite is one of the best color grading tool and now available as free Lite version. It works so far up to a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 but not directly with .mts files. Sony Vegas Pro 11 does work directly with .mts files but does not export AAF and EDL files which can be read by DaVinci Resolve. Hence a easy workflow is almost not possible with implemented tools from both sites. With EDL_Convert and the application of two Vegas scripts its possible to realize an effective and efficient Workflow. Rendered .mov files will not be endless in space consumtion. You can predict the head and tail trim of the original cut in Vegas.

Workflow Overview:

a) Media Ingestion

b) Vegas Edit

c) EDL_Convert (Creates two new Text EDL files + Subfolders for Workflow)

d) Vegas Batch Render (place before Noise Reduction, Velocity Envelopes if needed)

e) Davinci Color Correction

f) Vegas Final Edit (Title, Audio Effects etc.; final Render for Presentation)

Workflow Detail:

a1) copy .mts files to logical folder structure of your computer (something like c:\originals\yyyy\yyyy-MM\yyyy-MM-dd)

a2) rename them in a logical way (something like yyyy-MM-dd_hhmmss.mts)

b1) start Project in Vegas in a separate Poject folder - save .veg file

b2) at the end of the edit use "save as" and activate "copy media with project" (this will copy all .mts files into the Project folder)

b3) save Project.veg also now as Project.txt (Text EDL) file

c1) load Project.txt file into EDL_Convert Program (creates Project_EDL_lin.txt and Project_EDL_lin.veg in Project\CCInput\ folder, Project_EDL_final.txt in Project folder) and starts Project_EDL_lin.veg of Project\CCInput\ folder by EDL_Convert automatically. Regions are applied automatically as well.

d1) apply neat video, stabilizer and/or velocity envelopes to specific clips in Project_EDL_lin.veg

d2) Batch rendering in DNxHD format by means of A2_RegionsRender.cs. Choose Subfolder Project\CCInput for .mov files)

e1) load from this subfolder all freshly generated .mov files into DaVinci MEDIA

e2) Goto COMPOSE of DaVinci

e3) Add new empty timeline - right click on timelines area

e4) drag/drop sorted files from media files area to timeline

e3) start color grading in COLOR

e4) goto DELIVER and render graded files with original name into Project\CCOutput subfolder

e5) Move .mov Files to Project\ mainfolder

f1) start Project_EDL_final.txt of Project Folder in Vegas (audio files will be linked to .mts files, Video files will be linked to .mov files)

f2) edit the rest (put titles to your video, etc.), save all as .veg

enjoy....

Version History

v1buid003:

Did add head and tail trim

v1build004:

Did add new scripts A1_RegionsMark 24p, A1_RegionsMark 25p, A1_RegionsMark 30p. They will take care that you can render footage with mixed framerates to the target frame rate either 24p, 25p or 30p. This is done by automatically adjust "Undersample rate" as well as "Playback rate".

All RegionMark scripts will remove regions which might be set before and then subsequently sets the new regions.

Added A0_RegionsRemove which does only remove regions which might be set.

Added A0_RunEDL_Convert which will execute EDL_Convert.exe directly from Sony Vegas

v1build005:

Did correct frame shift. DaVinci Resolve thumbnails are now displayed correctly. Before that, thumbnails did show last frame of previous clip. Had to make changes in A2_RegionsRender.cs script as well as EDL_Convert.exe.

v1build006:

EDL_Convert program: introduce link to sony vegas; option to autorun Project_EDL_lin.txt, save it to Project_EDL_lin.veg and apply RegionsMark script. All RegionsMark scripts: automatic choose first track if nothing was selected; can be progressed from EDL_Convert to save .text to .veg

Install:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/gjnc673jymve3ug/EDL_Convert%20v1build006.zip

Copy all *.js and *.cs files to the script folder of Vegas Pro (something like: c:\Program Files\Sony\Pegas Pro 11.0\Script Menu)

Copy EDL_Convert.* files to the "C:\ProgramData\EDL_Convert\" folder of your computer. If you want to put it to another folder, please open the script A0_Run_EDL_Convert.js with a notepad editor and change the line var InstPath = "C:/ProgramData/EDL_Convert/EDL_Convert.exe"; that the path will fit. Please note: The script language is a little bit tricky. Sony Vegas does use "\" for making remarks within the code. Instead of "\" you have to use "/".

I asked in RedGiant forum, but no answer from them yet.

No issues when opening MBLooks 2.5 in Sony Vegas 13 Pro 64-bit (Windows 7 Ultimate x64). But after clicking on FINISHED button to go back to the Sony Vegas interface, it freezes Sony Vegas. Every time, even if the interface of MBLooks is not being opened, i.e. when selecting a Sony Vegas preset which includes MBLooks, the same hanging issue appears. The same issue exists even in 8-bit, especially when using LUT(!!!) "Video Track FX (Not Responding)" Any suggestions how to fix this?

That's what the system displays:

Sony Vegas renders over-saturated and over-contrast video? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7965/sony-vegas-renders-over-saturated-and-over-contrast-video Sun, 01 Sep 2013 03:15:24 +0000 tonalt 7965@/talks/discussions Wanted to share this, may help others.

This problem haunted me for long time. I was rendering clips in After Effects and then re-imported them to Vegas. Everytime I rendered videos from Vegas, them were over-saturated and had too much contrast.

I blamed Windows Media Player, my displays calibration, you name it... Then I finally found this video:

I had to simply just add Levels-plugin in Vegas with setting "Computer RGB to Studio RGB".

And now finally, the rendered video looks what it's supposed to look!

Workflow advice needed - GH2 Sanity 5.1 - Vegas 12 Pro, AE CS6, and Windows 7, where to start https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7358/workflow-advice-needed-gh2-sanity-5.1-vegas-12-pro-ae-cs6-and-windows-7-where-to-start Wed, 26 Jun 2013 05:43:03 +0000 lorilin 7358@/talks/discussions Hi all,

OK, so I've shot a bunch of footage now and need to put it all together. I'm doing the "behind the scenes" video for my partner's forthcoming album. I'll need to send a master to the record company for them to include on the DVD.

I've shot everything in Sanity 5.1 HBR (PAL), which has been super dependable. (Didn't use 24p because of the motion judder.) My worst beginner mistake is that some of my footage is pretty underexposed and will need to be lifted quite a bit. Color profile was smooth -2 all the way.

I can edit the MTS files natively in Vegas Pro 12 and it's plenty fast. But I'd like to do the color correction, titles, etc in AE so I can use ColorGhears (which I am loving!). That's where the confusion starts.

No matter if I open an MTS file directly in AE or export an AAF from Vegas to open in AE, the MTS files are unbearably slow to work with in AE. So my first question is if I should transcode my footage in Vegas before I send it to AE. And if so, what would be the optimal settings? I have the DNxHD codecs installed, and have downloaded 5DtoRGB as well, but am not sure about settings.

System: Windows 7 PC with 32GB 1600mhz RAM, GTX570 graphics card, Intel Core i7 processor, media files on external Raid 10 setup. My Adobe suite is from the Creative Cloud, so I have access to Premiere but don't really have time to learn a new NLE.

What I'd like to do is make my edit in Vegas, and then use AE for my grading/titles/effects etc. I'm super confused about the simplest way to set up my workflow, and about how to set up my project files in Vegas and AE for optimal results.

If anyone out there has any advice, I'd be really grateful! Anyone who helps out will have my undying gratitude (and a thanks in the CD booklet if desired!). And if my questions are too newbish, feel free to get in touch backchannel.

Cheers, Lori

Strange colo(u)rs in Sony Vegas - GoPro Cineform https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6092/strange-colours-in-sony-vegas-gopro-cineform Mon, 11 Feb 2013 17:09:25 +0000 crunchy 6092@/talks/discussions I apologise to disturb experts in color grading with probably simple question, but I have already tried possible and impossible things. The problem is GoPro Cineform codec and mix between Cineform and Sony Vegas.

Namely, when encoding the original footage by using UT codec the colours appear like normal (in Media Player Classic or in VirtualDub). When editing such a footage with Vegas, the colours are preserved, so everything is OK.

However, if the original footage is converted into GoPro Cineform codec, a red shirt appears slightly toward orange in VirtualDub (it is almost OK), but in Media Player Classic the shirt becomes almost orange. When editing in Vegas and exporting the clip (I've tried several settings), the shirt becomes even more orange in VirtualDub and completely orange in MPC.

Does anybody know which settings should I use when recoding into Cineform codec and which settings should I use in Sony Vegas (tips for Movie Studio are also welcome) to retain more or less the "original colours" and, if possible, the original contrast?

AATranslator: Conversion Tool Adds Video Capabilities - Help Make Them Better! https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4083/aatranslator-conversion-tool-adds-video-capabilities-help-make-them-better Sun, 29 Jul 2012 21:18:49 +0000 thepalalias 4083@/talks/discussions EDIT 1: If you are Vegas user thinking about exporting to DaVinci Resolve, you should definitely read this.

EDIT 2: If anyone has a FCP 7 exported XML 5 file or a DaVinci Resolve 8.2 XML file they could post so I could try to look at syntax differences vs. the current XML, it would be much appreciated. If you are interested in seeing the features below implemented so that you can buy the software,

Michael at http://www.aatranslator.com.au/ has been kind enough to spend a lot of time recently working on getting better FCP XML conversion capabilities into AATranslater (his relatively inexpensive conversion program for audio that is expanding to include video). If the conversion process worked properly, it would allow a lot very helpful things to happen.

  • The ability to take Sony Vegas Pro sessions in and out of Resolve the way the FCP 7 users can currently do (via FCP XML).
  • Improved export from Sony Vegas Pro to FCP 7 or Adobe Premiere Pro CS6.
  • He has talked about possible FCP X support.

And there are of course many others. I am not affiliated with Michael's company but if the conversion starts working, I will of course buy myself a copy of the software (because the process to get Vegas files into DaVinci Resolve is insanely difficult at the moment, even with the intermediate use of programs like Adobe Premiere to try and convert the AAF files to be more readable, etc.) When I say the workflow without this tool is insanely difficult, I mean over 30 man-hours this week alone on the problem and still have not solved in a satisfactory fashion after 2 weeks.

Here are some of the reasons why a converter like this would help. - Sony Vegas Pro 11 AAF files will not open in DaVinci Resolve 8.2. - Sony Vegas Pro 11 EDL files will not open in DaVinci Resolve 8.2. - Sony Vegas Pro 11 EDL files will not open in Adobe Premiere Pro CS6. - Sony Vegas Pro 11 AAF files that can open close to perfectly back into Sony Vegas, may have major issues in Adobe Premiere CS6. - The AAT Sony Vegas Pro XML import and export scripts (potentially) allow more information to come out of Vegas than an AAF file (current issues seem limited to BIN support and sub-clip support).

But at the moment we are hitting several challenges and so I would like to ask for help, both in providing additional files and in looking at the ones below.

The attached "AAT XMLfiles for PV - v1" ZIP file contains two files.

The "VP11 AAT XML v1" file is the XML output from Vegas using a custom AAT script.

The "AAT XML to AAT to FCP XML - v1" file was created by parsing that script through the converter at the moment (note that the program has not been designed for this sort of conversion and will have to be re-written to work properly).

If you have FCP 7 XML 5 exported files or similar DaVinci Resolve 8.2 files that you can upload for analysis, it would be appreciated. Or if you can look at the AAT FCP XML file below to find out things like why it will open in Premiere Pro CS 4.0.1 but not CS 6.0, it would also be appreciated.

Here's hoping Michael can create a conversion tool that would make life a lot easier, and thanks in advance for your help!

'Update 2012-07-30 01:02AM' - The resolution mismatch has now been fixed. - The CS6 "hanging" issue from a direct import (vs CS4 importing mostly correctly) is being looked at.

H.264 to self-contained Quicktime file? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3217/h.264-to-self-contained-quicktime-file Tue, 15 May 2012 15:14:24 +0000 bostonmike 3217@/talks/discussions After all the help I got with converting HD to SD and formatting it on a DVD, the film festival I'm taking part in decides to change the guidelines just days before the start of it. They are now accepting HD and will take a USB flashdrive as long as it conforms to the following guidelines:

A self-contained Quicktime file - codecs for HD: Apple Intermediate Codec, DVCProHD, HDV, Motion JPEG-A, Apple Pro-Res 4.2.2 (not HQ, LT, or 4.4.4), or H.264 (with a data rate of at least 16Mbps)

So I'm using my GH2 on a PC, rendering in Vegas Movie Studio HD 11.0, shooting 1080p 24fps

This is going to be shown a full-sized movie theater screen, so I want to maintain as much quality as possible. I wonder if there is any way of doing this without buying Quicktime Pro?
