I learn something almost daily. While I've read posts in several places on this topic, I've not found consensus, but have run into issues. Here's the scenario:

I'm shooting 4K with the GH4 for all the benefits including punch in, pans, etc. Final output is 1080p. Occasionally I'll mix in some HD footage.

The last project I did was 6.5 mins, but much to my surprise was really dragging down my computer. I wonder if some of you with more experience can suggest a better workflow. I'm hoping to avoid buying a new computer for another year, but will do what I must when I can. Here's what I'm working with:

Premiere Pro CC iMac (Retina 5K, 27 inch, Late 2014) 3.5 GHz Intel Core i5 16 GB 1600 MGz DDR3 AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2048 MB

To create a sequence, I've simply dragged the the first 4k clip to the timeline and let Premiere handle the settings accordingly. I edit, then export as HD.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and advice!

I need to convert my G7 4K footage to either FHD MP4 or MOV but I'm having an issue. The first is that my 24 fps footage is being converted to 30 fps and I see no way to stop that. Is this the way it is or a bug anyone else notice it? The other issue is I converted to both MP4 and MOV and the MOV file seems to be identical to the UHD file visually but the MP4 version definitely has increased contrast. Can anyone explain this? Looking for any solution or suggestions. I'm using Resolve 12 to edit which on my system has a very difficult time with the UHD files which is why I need to convert.

Shotgun mics directly to the GH2 with the 448kbps hack. Choices and Advise https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10692/shotgun-mics-directly-to-the-gh2-with-the-448kbps-hack.-choices-and-advise Mon, 30 Jun 2014 04:35:08 +0000 hexagonal 10692@/talks/discussions Hi everyone,

I accidentally started a conversation on the Driftwood patches thread on audio straight into the GH2 with the 448kbps audio patch.

I am a documentary photographer and recently joined the PV forum after deciding that a GH2 is the tool to have for my work.

I had two queries regarding spanning and in-camera playback and they both have been answered in the Driftwood patch thread: 64GB SD Sandisk Extreme Pro 95mb/s is the only card that spans with Moon T7 reliably and the 448kbps audio patch will make any clip non playable in camera.

Now, to the reason of this thread.

My needs are to simplify the gear I carry with me. I used to work with Rode Videomics plugged to my 5DII and that was that. The audio from them wasn't great.

Now, with the 448kpbs hack, the GH2 can be a great audio recorder without the need for an external recorder like an Edirol or a Zoom.

The conversation as left in the Driftwood patch forum relates to these two tests I found for shotgun mics (most of which can be plugged straight to the GH2) which are outdoors and at two distances.

The distance from where I work and from where the mics would be to my subjects is in between those two tests, both indoors and outdoors.

So far, through my DT770 32ohm which is fed by a Dragonfly, the MKE600 is a bit bassy but very good and the AT897 and the MKH 416 perform similarly at a distance. Close up, the differences are far more obvious.

Also, there has been a suggestion of using an ISK CM 60 which is battery powered:

http://www.swamp.net.au/isk-cm-60-battery-powered-condensor-microphone.html

However, I am unable to find a sample from it. @oto02 said he is getting one and getting ready to test it.

Also, @Jim_Simon mentions that the GH2 can record really good audio so I have hopes that I can work out this rather simple rig for documentary work (TV, festivals)

Many thanks for all contributions in advance.

EDIT: I just heard the tests again with my Sony V6 and still, the AT and the 416 sound roughly similar on both. I am not sure if the MKE 600 equalized would be similar to the 416 raw or if one can up the bass a bit on the AT and make it sound less flat. Both, At and 416, sound crisp.

Also, my budget for a good wide is around 200$. if anyone can suggest me a better vintage/new/used lens i would be thankful.

23.98 to 29.97 or HBR30P Which is Better? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7497/23.98-to-29.97-or-hbr30p-which-is-better Thu, 11 Jul 2013 18:57:23 +0000 Azo 7497@/talks/discussions I have a shoot coming up that requires 29.97 footage. This is how they want the footage delivered.

Preferred file specifications: Quicktime .MOV file Apple ProRes 422HQ Codec Frame rate: 29.97 FPS Audio: AAC 44.100 rate HD Dimensions:1920x1080

I would like to shoot this video with the best quality possible. That being said I know 24p is the best setting for the GH2 and if I shoot in 24p I will probably use Moon T5 or Intravenous Boom. The question is would it be better to shoot the video in 24p and then use compressor to export to 29.97 or just shoot in HBR30p mode and be done with it.

The patch that I would probably use is either Valkyrie TZ3 or Cluster X Nebula for the HBR30p mode. The video will consist of and interview and will also include car polishing with an orbital buffer.

I read an article that stated that shooting in 24p is the best way to deliver to multiple formats. Please chime in with your thoughts and suggestions.

Any and all input is greatly appreciated.

Grading MTS vs. ProRes converted files on OS X: is there a concensus? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7298/grading-mts-vs.-prores-converted-files-on-os-x-is-there-a-concensus Wed, 19 Jun 2013 11:14:14 +0000 Alienhead 7298@/talks/discussions I just started grading my footage with Premiere CS6 after using Final Cut Pro for a long time. I had been converting all my files to ProRes using 5D to RGB, which was the original recommendation of Andrew Reid on EOSHD. Then more recently he said it wasn't necessary to do that anymore because there's a fix in Premiere where you increase input and output levels to 15 and 235 respectively http://www.eoshd.com/content/8612/mac-avchd-gamma-issues-the-fix

In an AVCHD timeline in Premiere Pro CS6, I imported two clips, one the original MTS and the other a converted ProRes of that clip. But the result was not fixed by only 15 and 235 input/output adjustment, it required something closer to 40 and 215. And that did not mean that the result was the same, there was still more blue in the highlights and shadows in the MTS vs. the ProRes. Further adjustment would be needed, but the ProRes conversion was more balanced.

This was just my first test, and I'm no expert in this, but it seems like conversion to ProRes still makes sense. What are other people's take on this?

Transferring Super 8mm Film: Best GH2 picture mode for accurate color reproduction? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6537/transferring-super-8mm-film-best-gh2-picture-mode-for-accurate-color-reproduction Thu, 28 Mar 2013 22:18:12 +0000 powderbanks 6537@/talks/discussions I have collected several reels of Super 8mm film over the years and I finally picked up a transfer 'box' from eBay. Most of the footage is color and general 'home video' stuff (Christmas, somebody's wedding, some kid's birthday, etc), so what is the best picture profile on the GH2 to accurately reproduce the original color of the film?

I typically shoot with 'Smooth' all at -2, but that's so I get a very flat, gradable image. I will probably transcode the AVCHD files straight to an internet ready H.264 file, but I have no plans of grading any of it.

Visual ideas for shooting live music performance https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5763/visual-ideas-for-shooting-live-music-performance Sun, 13 Jan 2013 08:35:42 +0000 Mark_the_Harp 5763@/talks/discussions I think this is a great example of a simple video of a performance. I'm guessing it was probably done in more than one take, but what I really love is the use of focus pulls, particularly where several "planes" are involved, and also the shots of the performers at the start of the video. It captures perfectly what goes through your mind as a performer before starting a piece.

This is a link to the facebook page - I can't find out where the original source video is so you'll have to visit the page to see this. Well worth it, though, for anyone considering doing video of performance, just for some ideas.

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=232639466870299

While you can do an imaginative video using all sorts of locations and parallel stories, I think it's a challenge to do an interesting video of performers which just concentrates on them throughout. I really like what they've done here and would be interested in seeing any other examples of video which is confined to the one location.

I have a brand new GH2 (couldn't wait for GH3) form B&H for cheap.

I installed Apocalipse Now patch and I can't find a way to shoot in the best quality at 1080 25p (progressive). Looks like there's some option for 1080 25i, but not in HBR mode (as I understand this is the best quality mode) . In HBR it can make only 30p.

Is it possible to record in HBR mode in 25p? I could'n find the exact answer around.

Well, if it's no possible to shoot 1080 25 progressive , maybe I have to sell it... :(

Is there some hope for my case?

Thank you in advance.

This first test was made to see if there where any banding improvement, and are stills taken from video.

patch:
mpgxsvcd
AVC-HD High settings. 42 mb/sec 1080p AQ = 4 and 34
mb/sec 720p AQ = 2. Gop default. No other AVC-HD
changes.

settings:
-iso:320
-mode: vibrant
-shutter: 25
-wb: 3400k

with a Canon FD 50mm 1.4,
shooted at f2 with a macro conversion ring
(i shooted in macro because thats the only time when i can see any banding issue, at least in the lcd of the gh2)

to get the unhacked firmware, pass the panasonic original firmware through the ptools, selecting no patches, and save it with a higher last number, so that the camera will update the firmware once it gets loaded on the sd card (it doesn´t work directly to the sd card)
please, those that will post other comparisons, please remember to type all the settings as i did above.

Settings not for postproduction. Only for recording and storage. Max quality for general scenes.

I only have typical cards, class-10 (Transcend, real speed - 16Mbyte to write and 16Mbyte to read). I almost do not do postproductions, but only store the original recorded video, as it is. Can you recommend the best settings to PTools? :

  1. 720p/50fps c B-Frames with bitrate up to 34Mpbs with the best quality.

  2. 1080p/24fps with the best possible quality with two options - 24Mbps (24L) and 34Mbps (24H)

  3. 1080p/25fps with the best possible quality with bitrate up to 34Mbps (HBR)

  4. 1080p/30fps = 1080p/24fps on the quality of each frame, but just with more frame rate and bit rate - up to 34Mpbs(HBR).

I tried switch to B-Frames in 720p, but always have error messages for bitrate limit exceeded (I set max bitrate to 34Mbps). Although the recording with bitrate up 36Mpbs with a 1080p/24 error does not happen.

A friend asked me to enter one of those 48 hour film contests with him. The problem is I typically shoot in 1080p 24fps..in cinema mode on my GH2. The rules for submissions are as follows:

... a self-contained SD Quicktime file with no proprietary codecs on either: - data DVD - USB flash drive miniDV playable DVD

I'm editing and rendering on Vegas Home Studio HD 11.0. I'm wondering if I should be changing the settings on the camera BEFORE even filming, to easier convert to SD..There are also so many output options on Sony Vegas that I'm at a loss on what the best transfer would be to maintain the best quality in standard definition. Wondering if a USB flash drive would maintain better quality than a playable DVD?...it seems like rather than forcing filmmakers to downgrade their finished product, the contest staff should be upgrading their equipment to handle HD...these are only 4-7 minute videos after all. The finished videos will be screened in a full size theater..something tells me they are going to look not so good.

Thanks for the help.

When you open pTool and load the firmware, at the bottom you should see a letter somewhere between A and J in green, click it. This now loads the presets. NOW click "Version Increment" (first option in the option tree). Then change the Increment to something such as 10.

The key issue here is that I was changing the Version Increment BEFORE clicking the presets. So as far as the camera was concerned, no new firmware was on my card.]]>
