Vegas Pro produced an HEVC HDR10 video playable on any HDR TV and playable on Windows 10 computers capable of HDR (I have a 10bit, HDR monitor).

Resolve creates an Avid 10bit 4K HDR video with the correct HDR10 metadata. It plays on no hardware of any kind in HDR and does not play in HDR using any software I know about, but the file is recognized by YouTube as HDR. Resolve has no HEVC or even H264 10bit render options!

For the exact same HDR10 4K video the Vegas-produced file size was 408Kb. The Resolve-produced HDR10 4K video from the same clips was 8.6GB. Yes almost 9 gigabytes versus half a megabyte! The Vegas Pro video took 25 minutes to render, the Resolve video 7 minutes (because the file is only lightly compressed).

Here is the Resolve version:

Here is the Vegas version:

I do not see much of a difference. The Resolve video is brighter (more DR) because I was able to use the scopes to max out the DR.

I think I understand the scopes (designed specifically for HDR) and the controls in Resolve. But I understand neither in Vegas in ACES for HDR, yet (I have mastered them outside ACES and in SDR).

These HDR10 videos were both made essentially only using the built in (ACES or ResolveCM) transforms from Slog2 to HDR10 for 1000nits screens with little tweaking by me, except for increasing the DR a bit in Resolve.

Small studio - Indoor Lighting solutions suggestions 2018 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/18568/small-studio-indoor-lighting-solutions-suggestions-2018 Tue, 26 Dec 2017 05:57:57 +0000 konjow 18568@/talks/discussions Godox SL60 is a good light for fill or rim/hear light. Godox SL200 and Aputure 300w could be a good key option. Godox SL200 has bad reviews (even here) and Aputure seems to be good but Im looking for samething cheaper - does not need to work on battery but need to be 200/300W for a good key light.

Any suggestions for Sudio Key light to comlet SL60?

What are the alternative to at the moment or in comming 2018?

I like the Bowens options.

My homage to the 80'ies 3 min up-tempo synth-pop songs https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14547/my-homage-to-the-80ies-3-min-up-tempo-synth-pop-songs Sun, 07 Feb 2016 03:59:28 +0000 elkanah77 14547@/talks/discussions Tried to capture the essence of the fun, up-tempo and a bit melancholy synth-pop of the 80'ies. The decade I loved so much. I made this with a lot of old gear for the music Rolands, Korgs and Yamaha DX of course. Shot on the Sony A6000 with the kit-lens and the 55mm 1.8. Some shots are with the iPhone 6 and a 4K hack to get some movement going.

Are there any higher quality softboxes that will fit this head that I could upgrade to in the future? They all seem to have built in sockets or proprietary mounts.

I Need Help Recording A Grammy Winning Classical Vocalist in London https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10143/i-need-help-recording-a-grammy-winning-classical-vocalist-in-london Fri, 11 Apr 2014 15:04:59 +0000 thepalalias 10143@/talks/discussions Hi Guys,

I've got a spec project I'm working on where one of my friends (a Grammy winning classical vocal soprano) will be tracking vocals in London. Unfortunately she doesn't have a studio of her own and we couldn't fit the session in while she was in L.A. because of a last minute scheduling conflict with the L.A. Phil.

So if anyone would in London would be interested in helping out, please let me know (and any info. about gear and space would also be appreciated). Thanks!

Studio Setup with ATEM Television Studio Switcher and GHx https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5810/studio-setup-with-atem-television-studio-switcher-and-ghx Thu, 17 Jan 2013 14:04:13 +0000 craichead 5810@/talks/discussions Just joined here and wanted to share my experience setting up a 3 camera setup with 2 GH2s, 1 GH3 and an ATEM Television Studio switcher.

I'm a musical educator online and this will be my first time going to a live switched 3 camera setup.

Should have my first wave of gear arriving in the next few days - looking forward to getting it all setup.

I just spoke with tech support at BMD and they confirmed that the GH2s and GH3 should work together even if the GH3 is at 59.94fps (is it?) and the GH2s are 60fps - as long as one is running the latest software on the ATEM (3.4 I think).

I understand that the GH2s don't send audio via hdmi but I'm hopeful that the GH3 will as I've read a spec sheet that confirmed this (anyone know for sure?).

Cameras will be very close together. I'll be teaching guitar so I'm looking for a wide shot and a left hand closeup and right hand closeup. Hoping the Ex Tele mode works as well as reported - would save me a bundle not purchasing more lenses.

Went with the GH2/3s for their bang/buck ratio & clean hdmi. Also, I'm dslr shooter otherwise (Canon 5Diii/60d) and like the format with all it's endearing quirks ;)

Some of my work can be seen on www.tekoa.tv

Also hoping that Metabones will release their Speedbooster for M43 quickly!

A penny for your thoughts?

looking for cheap Studio Monitor 1080p advice https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5449/looking-for-cheap-studio-monitor-1080p-advice Tue, 11 Dec 2012 05:00:34 +0000 fatpig 5449@/talks/discussions Hello guys,

I am currently using an old 15" LCD monitor as my preview device, which is not very accurate. I do not have the need for a real studio monitor. what bothers me about this solution is the black level.

Today, still all TVs start with black at 16 of 255 shades as opposed to 0 of 255 shades in a PC monitor. (This is my understanding, correct me if I am wrong) At least, What looks grey on a PC monitor is often times still black on a TV.

I was thinking about getting a small 1080p TV as a monitor, but maybe you have better suggestions.

I am looking for a small Monitor for my working space (maybe around 20") that has TV black levels. Or would you suggest changing that in the graphics card config...?

Possible ProRes external recorder hack https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3974/possible-prores-external-recorder-hack Thu, 19 Jul 2012 14:20:00 +0000 Brian202020 3974@/talks/discussions The rumor is Blackmagic will eventually release a firmware update for the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 that will add ProRes support. The rumor is they are concentrating on releasing the Cinema Camera, so the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 update got put on the back burner. Blackmagic has said most of the Cinema Camera's internals come from the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2, and that will record ProRes. I'm writing this just incase Blackmagic decides to scrap the update or incase the rumors just aren't true. I believe the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 firmware could easily be manipulated to add ProRes support. The Hyperdeck Studio records ProRes as well, and both the Hyperdeck Studio and the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 get firmware updates via the Blackmagic Hyperdeck Utility software for Mac or PC. I know nothing about hacking or programing so I may be way off base here, but I would think you could take some of the code from the Hyperdeck Studio's firmware and put it in a hacked version of the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2's firmware. The Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 is $330. This would be by far the cheapest ProRes external recorder.

Does anyone think this is possible? Does anyone want to take this project on?

Cowboy $30 shoulder mount https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1035/-cowboy-30-shoulder-mount Tue, 27 Sep 2011 01:28:42 +0000 brianluce 1035@/talks/discussions @CRFilms
For $30 you can get the Cowboy. I have one and it's perfect. Does what it's supposed to do. The Indians are out of control with prices -- or has the nation of India relocated to Switzerland?
The Cowboy will do anything the Indian above will do or rip off other brands, and more importantly, the Cowboy is made in a proper Asian sweat shop.
