The Bleak Future of NAND Flash Memory https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2344/the-bleak-future-of-nand-flash-memory Mon, 20 Feb 2012 13:52:05 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 2344@/talks/discussions In recent years, flash-based SSDs have grown enormously both in capacity and popularity. In highperformance enterprise storage applications, accelerating adoption of SSDs is predicated on the ability of manufacturers to deliver performance that far exceeds disks while closing the gap in cost per gigabyte. However, while flash density continues to improve, other metrics such as a reliability, endurance, and performance are all declining. As a result, building larger-capacity flashbased SSDs that are reliable enough to be useful in enterprise settings and high-performance enough to justify their cost will become challenging. In this work, we present our empirical data collected from 45 flash chips from 6 manufacturers and examine the performance trends for these raw flash devices as flash scales down in feature size. We use this analysis to predict the performance and cost characteristics of future SSDs. We show that future gains in density will come at significant drops in performance and reliability. As a result, SSD manufacturers and users will face a tough choice in trading off between cost, performance, capacity and reliability.

The technology trends we have described put SSDs in an unusual position for a cutting-edge technology: SSDs will continue to improve by some metrics (notably density and cost per bit), but everything else about them is poised to get worse. This makes the future of SSDs cloudy: While the growing capacity of SSDs and high IOP rates will make them attractive in many applications, the reduction in performance that is necessary to increase capacity while keeping costs in check may make it difficult for SSDs to scale as a viable technology for some applications.

Searching for gear for GH4 for shooting in Taiwan https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14009/searching-for-gear-for-gh4-for-shooting-in-taiwan Sat, 31 Oct 2015 10:06:07 +0000 kolinko 14009@/talks/discussions Hello!

I didn't have much time to check out the gh4 so far, a lot of work hinders me, going too far into research for each little thing myself, that's why I hoped I could get a little support from you hear. Mostly I'll record video and sound on myself at the same time, not sure if I'll have an assistant from time to time. My idea until now is to record in 4k, maybe in 24fps should be alright I guess. The shooting will be for a 5 video monitor/large flat screen panels installation.

My equipment so far: GH4 with kit lens 12-35mm

  • Voigtlander Nocton 17.5mm 0.95f with UV and ND filters
  • Voigtlander Nocton 42.5mm 0.95f with UV and ND filters
  • One SD card SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB 280 MB/s (I'll have another one like that)
  • only one battery so far
  • trolley case

I'll definitely need a second battery or the battery grip, is it a good thing to have?

  • Sound Recording device
  • Microphone (one or two? maybe too much to handle!)
  • Wind jammer (boom?)

  • Any experiences with 'Rycote Zoom H5 Audio Kit' or 'Tascam DR-60DmkII 4-Channel Portable Recorder with Rode NTG2 Condenser Shotgun Mic Kit'?

  • Tripod mainly to use as proper stand in any condition, not sure if I'll need a very heavy one for doing pans?

  • Rig / steady cam? I actually would prefer shooting with a rig/steady cam to make pans with a heavy tripod. Follow focus! Which one?

  • A super-portable extra light like dedo light!

  • SSD discs for backups?

  • A Mattebox?

And everything should be of proper quality, lightweight one-person-solutions, possible to get through the airports O.K..

Thanks, I appreciate your hints, ideas, experiences and comments ! kolinko

SSDs, internal vs external. https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5243/ssds-internal-vs-external. Mon, 19 Nov 2012 15:13:46 +0000 christianhubbard 5243@/talks/discussions Hey guys, i've decided to upgrade the RAM of my 2011 MBP from 4 to 16gig, so I also wanted to do something about my drive speed. after seeing this video:
It sounded like a great solution, but after it's all said and done It would cost only 100$ less than replacing my stock hard drive.

That being said, it's still 100$ saved. Is there any real advantage in terms of speed of an internal SSD VS one connected via thunderbolt?

also will editing on the internal drive fragment it? maybe that's a stupid question but it is what I have heard in rumor around the internet.

Wireless SSD for travelling https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11022/wireless-ssd-for-travelling Mon, 11 Aug 2014 06:43:56 +0000 mmmage 11022@/talks/discussions Dunno if this is the right place for this thread - sorry if it's not!

Our team is developing a external wireless solid state disk that can be used to backup SD/CF card, view and share the photos via iPad, especially quick preview and manage the large RAW files. So the photographer does not need have to bring a heavy laptop while traveling.

How do you think of such a device? Do you think if it is useful? Genuinely looking for feedback from the photography community, looking to discuss the project, get some ideas before we finial release it.

Deal wish list for associated BMD products https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10294/deal-wish-list-for-associated-bmd-products Thu, 01 May 2014 17:35:36 +0000 catscratch 10294@/talks/discussions I'm new to this site but already have benefited from some fantastic deals on some quality products (thanks Vasiliy!). I've currently got a list of additional items that I will pull the trigger on as soon as funds allow.

There are, however, a few of items that I would dearly love to get a deal on and can't seem turn any up in various searches.

As the title suggests I'm interested in Black Magic Design (Cinema, Production,Pocket) cameras. One area that I'm on the constant hunt for is consumables, specifically BMD compliant SSDs (240 and 480GB) and to a lesser extent batteries (in my case V mount, but others may be chasing AB or others) .

Another item would be an affordable 3G SDI equipped 24p monitor.

Also affordable "technical" cables and conectors eg. SDI, lemo etc

Any help would be appreciated

SSD Workflow in Video Editing https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5434/ssd-workflow-in-video-editing Mon, 10 Dec 2012 06:05:19 +0000 Sph1nxster 5434@/talks/discussions First of all, apologize if this topic has been covered allready, the search function for the site does not work on my work computer for some reason.

I am looking for some help as to whether or not my current approach is in fact counter-productive or not.

For a while now since upgrading to a new work station, I have been using my SSD in the following way to edit:-

  • Windows 7 on SSD
  • Corel Videostudio X5 on SSD
  • Import Clips from SD card onto SSD ready for editing
  • Edit clips and render (export) to SSD
  • Once project is complete, move to 3 TB HDD for backup and storage

I have been told a few times now that I should not be using the SSD for either the storage of raw video files or using for exporting to either.

What are the reasons for this and could my workflow be improved?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

HFS Explorer

HFS Explorer is a Windows file browser that allows you to access your Mac hard disks and disk partitions through a program window. HFS Explorer can't mount Mac drives in Windows Explorer or do anything particularly fancy, but it works great if you just need an easy way to read and write to your Mac drives in Windows. Most importantly, HFS Explorer is free. It hasn't been updated since 2008, but the HFS+ format hasn't really changed since then, so compatibility isn't an issue

Interesting post about SSD https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/141/interesting-post-about-ssd Thu, 26 May 2011 11:09:21 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 141@/talks/discussions http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2011/05/the-hot-crazy-solid-state-drive-scale.html

General point that they are hardly reliable due to cheap MLC chips (especially if you have small space left and XP or Vista without TRIM).
I also can't go back to HDD as main sytem drive.
Author also thinks that it'll be more reliable techology in the future. It won't be, at least in near future. 25nm flash is much much worse :-) But cheaper.
Moral is pretty simple, buy few 2Tb drives and backup all on them (or even use dedicated home server for this).]]>
