Sound Devices (temporarily) end production of the 833 & MixPre3 mk2 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/25722/sound-devices-temporarily-end-production-of-the-833-mixpre3-mk2 Mon, 07 Jun 2021 06:55:52 +0000 IronFilm 25722@/talks/discussions

Hello Sound Devices family. Due to global semiconductor shortages, we have sadly been forced to put production of the 833 and MixPre-3 II on a temporary hold. We expect we will be able to restart manufacturing the 833 in November. We don’t have a restart date for the MixPre-3 II yet but we will let you know as soon as possible.

The MixPre-3 II and 833 are not being discontinued. We will continue manufacturing them as soon as our parts arrive! Other 8-Series and MixPre II Series mixer-recorders will not be affected. Some of our resellers still have 833s and MixPre-3 IIs in stock.

Thank you so much for your support during these shortages. We appreciate you all!

Sad news to know you no longer can buy these, but also not a total surprise what with all the supply issues there have been in 2021/2020 across all industries.

Makes sense they'd discontinue (for now) the 833 and MixPre3, as they are each the cheapest models in their respective product lines (8 Series & MixPre Series), thus probably have the smallest profit margins.

Wasn't that long ago Sound Devices did a price hike of their products, but I guess that alone wasn't enough to dampen demand, and now they have to (short term) cancel a couple of products to help ration out their stocked supplies of components.

PR

Sound Devices is proud to announce the MixPre-10T, the newest member of the MixPre Series (MixPre-3 & MixPre-6) of audio recorders, mixers, and USB audio interfaces. As its name suggests, the MixPre-10T is a 10-input recorder with built-in timecode generator and reader, offering up to 12 tracks of polyphonic WAV file recording – ideal for production sound mixers, field recordists, sound designers, and musicians.

"Since we released the MixPre-3 and MixPre-6 in April, we’ve heard how much our users love having phenomenal mic preamps in such a small, durable package," says Matt Anderson, CEO of Sound Devices, LLC. "The MixPre-10T offers higher track count, balanced outputs for additional routing flexibility, and built-in timecode generator and reader for trouble-free sync with any production. With the addition of the MixPre-10T, the MixPre Series continues to redefine the limits of traditional portable audio recorders."

Some of the major features of the MixPre-10T include:

  • Exceptional audio quality – featuring eight ultra-low-noise, discrete, Class-A, Kashmir mic preamps handcrafted by Sound Devices. The MixPre-10T offers signature analog limiters and new 32-bit A-to-D converters to ensure high quality, professional-grade audio recordings.
  • Accurate Timecode – with built-in, ultra-high accuracy timecode generator and reader. Even when turned off or if all power is removed, the MixPre-10T continues to hold accurate timecode for hours. With its BNC, Aux, and HDMI timecode connections, all common frame rates and timecode modes are supported as well as the ability to lock to or output word clock.
  • Versatile I/O routing - flexibility with its two TA3 balanced outputs and a 3.5mm Stereo output, each with routing matrix. The MixPre-10T comes equipped with eight XLR/TRS combo Mic/Line level inputs, and a 3.5mm Aux/Mic input, which may be used for 2-channel line input, camera return, or timecode.
  • Flexible powering options - including a locking 4-pin Hirose connector for either external battery powering or AC-powering, as well as AA or Li-Ion battery sleds.
  • Unintimidating design – featuring a sunlight-readable, IPS touch screen LCD, and transport control joystick, for the ultimate in convenient navigation.
  • Mixing and metering - with gain control knobs, and access to panning and soloing via a simple press of the knob. Easy-to-read ring LEDs display limiter activity, and three LCD views provide easy monitoring of multitrack, mix, and USB return meters.
  • Built-in Bluetooth Smart® - enables control of the device from the free Sound Devices Wingman app. Users can start/stop recording, enter/edit metadata, and arm, disarm and rename tracks. What's more, MixPre-10T users can manage and create sound reports, plus email those reports directly from an iOS or Android device via Wingman.
  • Superior headphone monitoring - through the MixPre-10T’s custom-designed, wide-bandwidth headphone amp, and user programmable routing presets.
  • Compact and durable - the MixPre-10T is small in stature relative to products in its class. It is also constructed with a die-cast aluminum chassis making it robust, yet extremely lightweight.

Like the MixPre-3 and MixPre-6, the MixPre-10T also makes an excellent USB audio interface featuring 12 channels into and 4 channels out from a Mac or Windows computer at up to 96k sample rate. The Mixpre-10T features the unique ability to record to an SD, SDHC or SDXC media card while simultaneously audio streaming via USB. As an added benefit, the MixPre-10T includes the ability to automatically copy recordings to a USB thumbdrive, which may be handed off to a client or kept as a backup copy.

The MixPre-10T offers three modes of operation: Basic, Advanced, and Custom modes. Designed to allow a user to start recording right out of the box, the Basic mode takes the guesswork out of audio recording and is intended for stereo recording applications. Advanced and Custom modes offer more experienced audio professionals and enthusiasts access to multi-channel recording and advanced settings, such as metering, routing, timecode, mic pre gain, stereo and M/S channel linking, input/output delay, headphone presets, and more.

The MixPre-10T is available to order from any Sound Devices authorized reseller, and is anticipated to ship by end of October.

10 track recorder priced somewhere between the MixPre-6 and 633, I assume. Further competition to the Zoom F8! (as while the MixPre-6 is great, there are still many reasons why people might prefer an F8 instead)

DIY Blimp for less than £20 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3455/diy-blimp-for-less-than-20 Sat, 02 Jun 2012 15:55:21 +0000 kronstadt 3455@/talks/discussions After realizing that a good BLIMP is more about the knowledge and theory, rather than the actual construction materials, I'm embarking on a construction of my own blimp for less than £20. This will hold my cheap chinese microphone EM-320E, which is still on its way. My inspiration came from here:
and here
. So whatever advice you can give me on how to improve my design, it would be greatly appreciated, and hopefully will help others later on. These are the materials that I'll be using:

  • Bird feeder (£3) - to make the frame. Length 33cm. Diameter 6cm (the cage is metal, but not too robust. I might replace it with a much tougher mesh from one of those metal mesh bins http://www.ebay.com/itm/190683027361)
  • 2 round tea strainers (£3) for the FRONT and BACK end caps
  • 2 plastic jars with diameter 6cm (£2) - I will cut off the caps so as to make both end caps of the blimp to easily screw onto the frame
  • 300mmX200mm of Ultra fine mesh (£4) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fine-Stainless-Steel-wire-mesh-Insect-Reptile-Vent-Vivarium-/110876648077?_trksid=p3984.m185&_trkparms=algo%3DRIC.CFNPRP%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUA%26otn%3D5%26pmod%3D110876648077%26ps%3D63#ht_500wt_1077 This will be used predominantly at the front of the construction. Fine mesh will go inside the frame. It will be last layer that the wind will travel through, and hopefully by then it will be completely broken. I'M NOT ENTIRELY SURE IF THIS FINE MESH WILL AFFECT THE SOUND TRANSPARENCY. I really need your advice here. PLEASE HELP!
  • Micro fiber cloth OR nylon stockings (£1) - this will go inside the birdfeeder, after the fine mesh
  • 6 Rubber bands (£0) - to hold the mic inside the bird feeder in X pattern
  • 2 fluffy faux-fur lady's ankle warmers (£5) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300698800758 hopefully these are good, thick and tight enough fake fur to block most of the wind. I will just saw the ends of these fluffies together, to make them into "bags". They are 40cm long, so should hold the entire blip pretty nicely. If you can find any better material on eBay please post a link.

So what do you think? Will it work?

I'm especially concerned with a small (6cm) diameter of the birdfeeder, but I hope that adding the fine mesh should supplement that like in this video

Or am I wrong?

Headphones, best affordable https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3425/headphones-best-affordable Thu, 31 May 2012 10:37:19 +0000 kronstadt 3425@/talks/discussions Hi,

I thought I'd start a thread about the monitoring headphones. I need ones that I can plug into my Zoom H1. Which ones are good value for the money? I would love to buy SONY MDR-7506, but those cost £105 (the real ones, not Chinese counterfeit). So which headphones would you recommend for sound monitoring for no-budget kind of film-making?

Must be cheap, but relatively good quality, like those cheap Chinese mics.

Any advice?

Sound mixing, and matching tracks recorded in different ways https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/18255/sound-mixing-and-matching-tracks-recorded-in-different-ways Thu, 16 Nov 2017 17:46:46 +0000 Brian_Siano 18255@/talks/discussions I'm finalizing a video project, and there's a big issue with our sound recordings.

Here's the background. While shooting, we obviously got camera mike sound for all takes. But we'd rented and used a couple of shotgun mikes with a Tascam recorder for many scenes, and the sound we got from those is marvelous. Obviously, my question is about making the camera mike tracks sound a bit more like the fuller, shotgun-mike tracks. Or vice versa, if that's what's needed.

I'm not much of a sound person, so I'd have to understand the principles involved, and then learn to use the Premiere Pro or Audition tools to accomplish the job. Can anyone point me to some good tutorials that might help?

I swear by this on the PC. This has been for years my audio editor of choice and its great to be able to have this on OSX - it requires 64 bit OS (Lion and ML compatible only) and its one of the best mastering packages around. Shame there's no CD architect built in but Im sure Sony will furnish us with an update soon.

http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/soundforgepromac

Built on a clean slate for OS X, Sound Forge™ Pro Mac provides a contemporary application environment that’s perfect for recording, editing, processing, and rendering broadcast-quality audio master files. A fresh statement on audio editing software, Sound Forge Pro Mac includes a comprehensive suite of mastering, restoration, and repair tools for immediate results.

With the loss of Bias Peak, the competition was getting thinner on the ground with only Adobe and Steinberg Wavelab to master audio to. Now with this release we have a decent tried and tested editor via the PC. Excellent!

Royalty free music for Indies https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6763/royalty-free-music-for-indies Sun, 21 Apr 2013 19:41:52 +0000 DrDave 6763@/talks/discussions We are revisiting the idea of creating royalty free music. This music can be used by anyone from high school teachers to indie film makers. What makes it royalty free? As you may know, copyrights are complicated. For example, you can give away the rights to a performance, but the actual music score may have rights attached to it. You can't record the song of another artist, and then claim you own it.

When we looked at this topic about eight years ago, we thought the Magnatune system was the way to go (disclaimer: we release our recordings on Magnatune). On Magnatune, you keep all the rights to your "CD" as we used to call an album, but they distribute it. You get half, they get half. Half is way more than I got from the big labels, and Magnatune is a great label. We still OWN all of our tracks. AS a filmmaker, you could (and still can) license the tracks for really dirt cheap, and, again, the creator got a dollar or so, depending. We figured, no one is going to balk at a few dollars for a sound track that would cost thousands to produce. We figured wrong. People did use the license feature, but not in the waves that we expected.

Well, as it turns out, people have this "must be free" attitude, which in a way is a driving force of the internet--no one wanted to pay the artists, even though they themselves are artists. So rather than rant about how ridiculous this is, we are starting a different model, and we can see that others are doing the same thing.

The new model is to just give it all away, free, and raise the money to produce it through Kickstarter or something similar. You can see our Kickstarter project here. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/301451197/bach-brandenburg-concertos-the-great-works-project

Once it is done, ppl can use the soundtrack. It may not be what you are looking for, but it will be free :) You'll notice that the music is old, like really old. That way, it is solidly in the public domain. Composers of course can create new scores and using for example Creative Commons we can record newer music as well. We have some new music projects in the works right now.

Searching for gear for GH4 for shooting in Taiwan https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14009/searching-for-gear-for-gh4-for-shooting-in-taiwan Sat, 31 Oct 2015 10:06:07 +0000 kolinko 14009@/talks/discussions Hello!

I didn't have much time to check out the gh4 so far, a lot of work hinders me, going too far into research for each little thing myself, that's why I hoped I could get a little support from you hear. Mostly I'll record video and sound on myself at the same time, not sure if I'll have an assistant from time to time. My idea until now is to record in 4k, maybe in 24fps should be alright I guess. The shooting will be for a 5 video monitor/large flat screen panels installation.

My equipment so far: GH4 with kit lens 12-35mm

  • Voigtlander Nocton 17.5mm 0.95f with UV and ND filters
  • Voigtlander Nocton 42.5mm 0.95f with UV and ND filters
  • One SD card SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB 280 MB/s (I'll have another one like that)
  • only one battery so far
  • trolley case

I'll definitely need a second battery or the battery grip, is it a good thing to have?

  • Sound Recording device
  • Microphone (one or two? maybe too much to handle!)
  • Wind jammer (boom?)

  • Any experiences with 'Rycote Zoom H5 Audio Kit' or 'Tascam DR-60DmkII 4-Channel Portable Recorder with Rode NTG2 Condenser Shotgun Mic Kit'?

  • Tripod mainly to use as proper stand in any condition, not sure if I'll need a very heavy one for doing pans?

  • Rig / steady cam? I actually would prefer shooting with a rig/steady cam to make pans with a heavy tripod. Follow focus! Which one?

  • A super-portable extra light like dedo light!

  • SSD discs for backups?

  • A Mattebox?

And everything should be of proper quality, lightweight one-person-solutions, possible to get through the airports O.K..

Thanks, I appreciate your hints, ideas, experiences and comments ! kolinko

Weird Interference Noise on Zoom H6 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14600/weird-interference-noise-on-zoom-h6 Wed, 17 Feb 2016 09:52:04 +0000 guzelmarmara 14600@/talks/discussions Hi, I have a Zoom H6 which I really love to use. Since I'm short in budget and need lavalier mics for interviews, I bought an Audio Technica ATR3350, Aputure Lav Mic and a Chinese made mic.

When I connect these mics to XLR ports with Rode's XLR adapter, there's an annoying signal sound, it's not hiss/humm, something else. When I use the 3.5 connection on the X/Y adapter of H6 with plugin power, this noise is still there.

ATR3350 has its own battery, so I don't think it's about phantom power (however I shut the power down). Also I realized when I touch the USB connection of H6 at right with my finger, the noise reduces (really weird). Same happens when I touch to the metal plate on the front face of the device as well. Somehow, my hand is stopping the noise.

When I connect these mics to Zoom H1, there's no noise. I contacted with Zoom product service, had a reply to my email, then they stopped talking with me. "Kind reminders" didn't work.

My only options for now are these devices and for a long time I'll not be able to afford a wireless transmitter. Here you can find a sound record demonstrating my problem, sorry for my weak English and moaning voice :) http://1drv.ms/1PWQCIh

Any solutions?

My plan is to get a Zoom H4 ($100 used), a Sound Devices MP-1 ($400) or maybe a Naiant Tiny Box preamp ($300), an Oktava MK012 ($300) hypercardioid mic. I will bypass the Zoom preamps by using the ¼ inch inputs coming from the preamp. I will probably have to pad the cable from the preamp at 15db, since the Zoom assumes a consumer -10db line level, while most preamps output a +4db line level.

Do you guys think this is the best value I can get for around $1000? I really can’t spend any more than that. Should I just get a better recorder and ditch the preamp? Also would be interested to hear opinions on Tiny Box vs MP-1. Your advice is appreciated.

Beachtek DXA-SLR for HDSLR Video https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/168/beachtek-dxa-slr-for-hdslr-video Thu, 02 Jun 2011 23:26:58 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 168@/talks/discussions
For ages the name “Beachtek” was used much in the same way that the term “Xerox” is used for copies. When you needed to plug an XLR microphone into your camera, people told you to use a Beachtek. They certainly wouldn’t say “Use a Camcorder XLR Adapter,” even though, technically, that’s what these boxes are called. In recent years Beachtek has faced lots of healthy competition from the likes of a new-comer called juciedLink. But Beachtek didn’t rest on its laurels, and recently developed the DXA-SLR specifically for HDSLR video shooters.

Wearable sound recorders: need advice https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4538/wearable-sound-recorders-need-advice Tue, 11 Sep 2012 12:23:54 +0000 Brian_Siano 4538@/talks/discussions A few years ago, I bought a small pocket recorder for journalism work. These are small, cheap recorders about the size of an iPod, with a 3.5"' jack for a microphone. I once tried using it to record the sound of a play I was shooting, to gain an extra soundtrack of stuff that was too distance for my Rode mike to get. It didn't work too well, because the recorder's soundtrack was a tiny percentage slow: if I synced it up with the start of the play, by the end it was perhaps ten seconds out of time. Fixing that was possible, and seems easy in theory, but in practice it was a pain.

Thing is, I recently got a nice lapel mike that works great. Now, I'm thinking of trying that recorder trick again-- and since the recorders and mikes are very cheap, I could buy six or seven pairs, attach them to a play's actors, put the recorders in their pockets, and get really good soundtracks that I could mix while editing.

But it'd require mini-recorders that recorded at the proper rates. Are there any mini-recorders that work well with video?

Foley / Music - audio sampling kit https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11379/foley-music-audio-sampling-kit Wed, 24 Sep 2014 13:04:30 +0000 matthere 11379@/talks/discussions I am looking for some advice on audio sampling kit. I want to pick up a good quality microphone with very low self noise that I can use for high quality audio samples to be used for music production and foley, probably a condenser as I want to use it outside for field recording as well as in the studio. A wide frequency response seems the way to go for audio production, but this probably means getting a new recorder (I currently have a Sony pcm-m10) which is quite low noise but probably not good enough for music production?

Price wise (I understand this can soak up all I am willing to throw at it) I have been looking at the Earthworks qtc40/50 Mics but would prefer to spend a bit less (around £500/$800) for the mic especially if I need a new recorder.. I have also been researching portable dat recorders which seem to have a good frequency response, but not sure if old tech is a good option? Analog tone?

It would also be nice if I could use the sound kit with the GH4 too..

If I need a new recorder and mic I'd like to keep it around £1200 - £1500 ($2000-$2500) for both.. It would be great to get some input from others as over six months of research has still left me confused about the right kit to go for to get the best quality on a budget, thanks :)

Matt
