We just finished a commercial film production and thought I share some insights on why we have chosen to shoot this with the GH4. Our key requirements have been

  1. 10Bit 4k capability (greenscreen project!)
  2. Light weight (we had challeging camera angles and limited budget for rigging => e.g. birdeye shots with shitty rig)
  3. Long battery life (we didn't want to add external battery solutions => our rig had very low weight limitations)
  4. Problem free (e.g. no overheating)

So after long discussions choosing between Sony A7s II and GH4, we decided to use the latter one and I don't regret this decision.

We had a lot of challenges but they have not been regarding camera choice, more related to the customers corporate colors (yellow turning green in shadows) and lighting the massive greenscreen. The only real challenge on the GH4 for us was the shitty HDMI port but we solved that with adding a Zacuto Port Protector (without that, it would have been a nightmare!).

I just and finally determined the cause of my Shogun (attached to an a7s) skipping one frame and starting new clips during recording: Static electricity. It didn't always behave like that but for a while now. So I replaced all cables to no avail and when sitting on my sofa and again touching the camera it zipped me and I could see the Shoguns screen go black for an instance. I can reproduce this as often as I want.

So let this be an info for you, in case you're wondering about the same thing. And if anybody has an idea on how to be permanently earthed while walking and shooting? Much abliged. :)

My journey in helping Tuxera to humanize their brand started in early October 2015. From the very beginning, it was clear that our limited budget meant that we had to be innovative, both in terms of story and actual production. We decided to go for a mix of carefully selected stockfootage and combine it with some powerful low key footage from the Tuxera lab, which we shot with a GH4 on a shogun.

I hope this film will help Tuxera to get closer to the billions of people powering their devices with their ground breaking software.

My DoP decided to use a GH4. I was first sceptic but after some tests with CineD in 4k on a Atomos Shogun, he convinced me that it was up to the task. All in all, I would say this is a very capable camera for professional production.

As I browsed the web on the advantages (or lack thereof) of using a Shogun with my GH4 I realized that I'd really like to have all those software features on my field monitor. Since I am not going to need external recording I was a monitor-only solution comparable to the Shogun. 1080p would be nice also.

Any ideas, anyone? Thanks!

@Vitaliy_Kiselev Here's a list of my desired features (could have thought of that myself...):

  • Custom frame guides
  • 1080p
  • IPS display (or whatever technology bright enough for outdoor usage)
  • normal HDMI port (not mini or micro)
  • waveforms, RGB levels and histogram would be nice but are not a necessity.
  • focus peaking
  • 7 or 8 inch
  • a nice user interface

It doesn't have to be cheap (it couldn't be).
