I really couldn’t hold it still no matter what I did because it didn’t have image stabilization. I had the 14-140mm lens with me as well but the climbing gym was way too dark to use a small aperture lens.

This year I specifically bought the GH3 and 35-100mm F2.8 to shoot the National Championships. I have to remain very mobile at the comp going from climb to climb so a tripod or even a monopod is not really practical. There are usually 5 or 6 rows of people in front of you so it is hard to shoot over them. I usually lift the camera over my head and use the flip-out screen to frame the shot.

I shot the video below entirely hand held with the GH3 and 35-100mm F2.8. About half of the shots were at 100mm and I never had to use the ETC mode. I have a GoPro 3 Black that I leave running for wide angle shots at 4k and 15 FPS or 720p @ 120 FPS. However, the GoPro really isn’t in the Video Quality league that the GH3 is even at Ultra-HD resolutions.

I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the results from a stabilization stand point this year. I had to stabilize a few of the 100mm shots in software but it is clearly better than last year’s results without the in-lens stabilization.

There is also the fact that I had a stake in the game for some of the shots. My son and his teammates made it much further in the competition this year. Therefore, I was shaking like a leaf in those shots.

My son’s final climb starts at 4:11 into the video. Even with the software stabilization it was obvious that I was shaking uncontrollably. Just check the two clips after that on the same climb. They are almost rock solid without any software IS at all. Those clips were taken almost an hour later after my heart rate had a chance to come back down out of the stratosphere.

In the end my son jumped from last place to 3rd in the final round and made the US National Team for the first time. His teammate also won his 4th consecutive National title and will compete at Worlds next month.

Let me know what you think about this video. I didn’t do any color grading at all. This is simply the Scenery color profile essentially straight out of the camera. I used AFF the entire time and I use the touch screen hand held for all of the focus pulls.

I can’t believe how well some of the iPad focus pulls turned out.

Anyone who says that m4/3s focus isn’t fast enough or accurate enough is simply just doing it wrong or they are basing that opinion off of the older cameras. It is the easiest thing to just drag the focus from object to object on the LCD screen. I never use the EVF either. I think the LCD screen is much easier to use.

I also save stills from these videos directly in the cameras playback mode to upload them to facebook for instant sharing. Most people are shocked at how good the quality of the movie stills is. They are also surprised when I have uploaded pictures of their climber before the climber is even done climbing their route.

I shoot the videos in stills mode. Most people assume that you have to use full manual controls or at least shutter priority mode for video to control the shutter speed. However, I use the flicker control setting to fix the shutter speed to 1/120 of a second for the 1080p @ 60 FPS video I shoot. This is also a good way to get around the fact that the GH3 only does 1/125 of a second shutter speed for stills. The flicker control is a true 1/120 of a second shutter duration.

Overall I couldn’t be happier than I am with both the GH3 and the 35-100mm F2.8 lens. I use it in full auto mode for video so I can even hand the camera off to someone else if I need them to shoot some video.

I never intend to sell my videos so I am not a Professional photographer. However, I do want the best quality. With the GH3 + 35-100mm I can get that. However, lately I have been recommending the FZ200 and LX7 to the other climbing parents and they are able to get very similar results for much less money.

The days of needing $10,000 worth of gear to shoot high quality footage are over. The GH3 is better than anything else I have ever shot with for video and it holds its own for stills against the APS-C cameras.

Panasonic GH3 firmware update V1.2 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7470/panasonic-gh3-firmware-update-v1.2 Tue, 09 Jul 2013 10:51:25 +0000 mpgxsvcd 7470@/talks/discussions I couldn't find any other threads on the new GH3 firmware V1.2. If this isn't the correct place to post please move it.

It appears that low light AF is improved. and several new settings are added. I don't fully understand when AF is improved though. Is it when the scene is underexposed or just when you are using a high ISO? I have tried some tests with my v1.1 firmware GH3 but it seems to do an excellent job already without the update.

Has anyone applied the update already. Will applying this update prevent you from using a Hack/Patch that is based off of the v1.1 firmware? If so then I imagine a lot of people won't update right away. I don't intend to hack my GH3 so I will give v1.2 a shot.

http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/download/fts/index2.html

There is a good explanation of the low light focusing by Andy Westlake at the link below.

http://www.dpreview.com/news/2013/07/09/panasonic-releases-firmware-updates-for-lumix-dmc-gh3-and-g5-mirrorless-cameras

Here are the changes

Ver.1.2

"Low Light AF" is added that makes it possible to set focus on the subject in low-lit situations (-3EV).

"Silent Mode" is added which suppresses electronic shutter, shutter sound, operation sound and flash emission with a single setting.

"Exposure Comp. Reset" is added which resets the setting of exposure compensation to ±0 whenever the camera is turned off or the shooting mode is changed.

Performance of AF is enhanced in use with H-PS14042 and H-PS45175.

Connection problem with Apple Mac computers via Wi-Fi is fixed.

Imec and Panasonic present 4K2K CMOS sensor https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7334/imec-and-panasonic-present-4k2k-cmos-sensor Sun, 23 Jun 2013 21:57:13 +0000 Manu4Vendetta 7334@/talks/discussions The co-developed imager sensor chip targets high speed, high resolution imaging applications such as next generation HDTV

Leuven, Belgium – June 18, 2013 – Imec presents a CMOS image sensor capable of capturing 12-bit 4,000x2,000pixel progressive images at 60 frames per second (fps). Based on a stagger-laced dual exposure, the image sensor developed with Panasonic, was processed using imec’s 130nm CMOS process on 200mm silicon wafers to deliver high-speed and high-quality imaging, at reduced output bit rate.

The number of pixels on image sensors in video and still cameras keeps increasing, along with the frame rate and bit resolution requirements of the images. 4K2K will be the next-generation broadcasting format, offering an increase by a factor of two in both horizontal and vertical resolution compared to current state-of-the-art High Definition TV.

The image sensor chip is a floating diffusion shared 4T pixel imager, with a pitch of 2.5 micron and a conversion gain of 70 μV/e-, which allows for both a classical rolling shutter or stagger-laced scanning mode. The 4K2K 60-fps imaging performance is realized by 12-bit column-based delta-sigma A/D converters. The stagger-laced scanning method improves imaging sensitivity and realizes a 50 percent reduction in output data rate by alternating the readout of two sets of horizontal pixel pairs arranged in two complementary checkerboard patterns. Additionally, the overall power consumption of the imager is less than two Watts.

“This is an important milestone for imec to demonstrate our capability to co-design, prototype and manufacture high performance CMOS image sensors in our 200 mm CMOS fab,” commented Rudi Cartuyvels, Senior Vice President Smart Systems & Energy Technologies at imec.

GF1 hack (manual modes in video) bug https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7283/gf1-hack-manual-modes-in-video-bug Tue, 18 Jun 2013 05:14:47 +0000 bkej 7283@/talks/discussions Hello,

I use my GF1 + firmware hack since more than 6 months, it's great, congratulations :)

I have the following problem :

  • Set "Mode A" for video

  • Shut down the camera

  • Power on the camera

  • The "Mode A" setting for video is forgotten! The only way for having "Mode A" for video again is : go in the menu, set ANOTHER mode , e.g. "Mode P" for video, and THEN go in the menu again and set "Mode A" for video again.

I know somebody else having the same problem, with the same camera.

Who should I contact about this little bug?

Thanks in advance.

Personally I use nostalgic for most shooting. Ocassionally I'll use cine mode if there are highlights that I want to preserve. Both with sharpening turned off.

For dynamic range, nostalgic seems to be the best bet: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/PanasonicDMCGH2/page12.asp though it will blow your highlights easily and does give a slight colour tint.

Does anyone else have preferences?

Rendering full hi-def in PP CS5: need settings for fast render https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7268/rendering-full-hi-def-in-pp-cs5-need-settings-for-fast-render Sun, 16 Jun 2013 11:57:48 +0000 Brian_Siano 7268@/talks/discussions I'm running into an odd problem with a project. I have several video streams that I shot using a Panasonic TM700: they're all ACHCD files, 1920 x 1080p. Since the subject was a three hour stage play, each video stream is comprised of four or five separate MTS files.

Now, for ease of editing on my slower computer, I rendered these streams into lower-res (1280 x 720) files, and I'll use these to do my first edit. Each of these took about six hours to render. (Each file is named for the date of the performance, i.e., Feb 1, Feb 2, Feb 5, etc.)

Thing is, eventually, after the actual edit is locked, I'll probably want to work with the full hi-def files. So I tried to render full hi-def versions of each performance. Thing is-- even though I'm using 1920x1080 29.97 files as a source, and the sequence has the same settings, each one of these will take about 10-11 hours to render. This seems strange to me, since there'd be almost no conversions, resamplings, recolorings, or anything else. (Also, the estimated final size of the file is twice as big as the combined original files.)

So. What sequence and export settings can I use for the greatest efficiency here?

GF6 Issues Topic https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7073/gf6-issues-topic Sun, 26 May 2013 11:05:58 +0000 Nakame78 7073@/talks/discussions I bought the GF6 for my wife a few days ago here in Japan, it's a very nice camera, light and compact. However the WiFi is giving me issues similarly to what I experienced with the GH3 at the beginning. The only difference is that now with the GF6 the WiFi is basically unusable, whereas with the GH3 after some struggle I managed to get it work. The first time I set up the WiFi with the "Image App" application on the iPhone it worked easily, I played a bit with it and it was perfect. However after switching off the WiFi.. there is no way I can connect my iPhone to the GF6 anymore. WiFi connection is established and the camera is asking to open Image App on the iPhone, but when I do so the connection is never established. No need to say I've tried everything, restart from scratch, delete the WiFi settings, no luck. I've then tried with another iPhone and.. same! It worked perfectly the first time, but after that.. gone. No more. I will try to contact the vendor and see if they can give assistance...

Panasonic GH3 vs Sony FS100 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6976/panasonic-gh3-vs-sony-fs100 Wed, 15 May 2013 22:44:35 +0000 chasehagen 6976@/talks/discussions Wondering if anyone has any experience or videos/comparisons between the old low light king, FS100 and our new-ish Panny flagship the GH3? Haven't had a chance to try both out side by side for a test or comparison but I figure someone must have. I would assume the FS100 would still have the edge in lowlight performance (i.e. grain/noise) but what about other aspects like actual resolution tests/comparisons (lines resolved), Dynamic Range, Rolling Shutter, Moire, Slow-Mo, Codec, Grading Capability. I would assume the GH3's 50Mbps would be far superior in color grading latitude and for Green screen compositing than the 24Mbps AVCHD of the Sony? Just be interesting to see if anyone's done any tests or have some insights between the two cameras as I cant seem to fin any online anywhere (all GH2 vs FS100). I've got a GH3 (and a GH2) just curious if the Sony's worth the extra few $K if you don't need XLR and Super 35mm DOF and extreme low light performance. Grateful for anyone who could share some insight on their observed differences between these two great cams! Thanks!

GH2 vs AF100 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/26/gh2-vs-af100 Sat, 23 Apr 2011 23:44:21 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 26@/talks/discussions Any sign of not expressing your personal view, but blatant AF100 marketing compain, that is strongly going on few leading sites, will be eliminated.
Reason?
Panasonic thrown unprecedented amount of money on AF100 marketing. And it is long known for heavy forums usage.

Famous AF100 advantages list:
1. 3 position ND filters (if your read the DSLR forums a lot you know the headaches people go through finding a good all around ND filter solution)
2. The LCD on the AF100 is quite a bit better and is larger...the VF is also more ergonomic.
3. HD-SDI (ability to get 4:2:2 from a very reliable output is very important to some)
4. Overcranking/undercranking (this feature is priceless for many shooters)
5. Waveform + Vectorscope
6. Detail coring/numerous gammas/ much deeper control of the image parameters, etc
7. Uncompressed 16 bit audio recording capability/xlr inputs
8. Timecode/Synchro function
9. 6 Scene files for easily recalling adjustments
10. Dual card slots
11. Max bitrate available in way more modes than the GH2
12. More shooting modes on AF100 like 1080 30P, 720 24P, etc.
13. Remote control pricelesss for certain situations
14. Longer battery life/ Better batteries available
15. PAL/NTSC switchability
16. Zebras
17. Headphone jack
18. Negative gain function
19. Ergonomic features like the handle/ tape hook, etc
20. Slow synchro/High speed shutter - can be set by degree

I was very surprised the camera mentioned I only had 0,5 hour of recording time - also when I re formatted the card twice. I was using the AVCHD mode 50 p 28 Mbps.

Same amount recording time, also when I switched to MP4 and Mov. I double checked the card on my notebook just to be sure they didn't place a wrong sticker - but it actually is 32 GB.

Then I tried some more cards and it's not the camera - it's this card. Have bought another card and it has the same problem here.

Then I tried resetting the whole camera to factory defaults - still the same problem. I made a recording of 0:30 hour and then checked the memory card on my macbook. It sais I have still 25,4 GB memory left. When I putted my card back into the GH3 it said I have again 30 minutes despite the fact that it told me earlier that it was full. Then I initialized the card again, getting again the 30 minutes. Shoot spent 60+ euro's spend on a 32 GB card that's runs so poor!

Hope somebody has an answer as I will have lots of problems returning these cards. Guess the card maker will blame Panasonic and vice versa.

You all know about this lens. Indispensable in a GH2/3 or any other micro four thirds kit. The OIS is great on this lens, and I relied on it many times in run and gun situations and it preformed admirably. Great zoom.
