Cheap usefull camera replacement. https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/24068/lx100-dead-quest-to-replace-the-little-one.-cheap-usefull-camera-replacement. Thu, 09 Jul 2020 20:33:16 +0000 RoadsidePicnic 24068@/talks/discussions My LX100 is dying. Cant blame it after 6 years of service and lots of abuse. The lens started to get struck, lots of dust in sensor, I opened the thing and cleaned it a bit, put some white grease in the lens carriage (why they dont put it in factory to start with? why run it dry?), its better now but the lens motor still weak. Obviously they charge a hundred bucks for a little half a dozen dolar eletric motor.

Thing is, maybe is time to change the gear, so I'm doing some research and collecting info into an upgrade path/replacement here.

Scope:

  • personal camera

  • 4K30p or better

  • 2k60p or better

  • good bitrate, decent quality, don't mind raw

  • will not dump loads of money into it, ideally $800 fully operational

  • can make pro work, useful in-camera tools (yes LX100 was pretty capable, not talking about Ale$$$xa here)

  • wifi, stopmotion, timelapse, control app

  • hdmi not important but a plus

  • uses cheap media, cheap to stabilize and grip, minimally solid, will not sudenlly stop working on location, will not fry on mist, etc

GH3 Best Video Settings https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7091/gh3-best-video-settings Tue, 28 May 2013 18:13:57 +0000 maddog15 7091@/talks/discussions Bought a GH3 just over a week ago. So far extremely happy with it on many levels. Have an interview job coming up so I did a multi cam test with my GH2 (Moon T5 loaded) and my new GH3 (Highest setting - MOV 1080p 24, @ 72Mb/s, All Intra). GH3 as camera A - front, GH2 as camera B - profile. When I synced the two vids in Premiere Pro for a multi cam edit... things were...different. Long and short of it.... the GH2 with Moon T5 kicked the GH3's butt hands down in low light.

In a nutshell the GH3 produced much more noise than I expected. And an overall lower quality image vs the GH2 under the same shooting conditions. (Both cameras shooting with the same f-stop, S-speed and ISO)

It was recommende3d by @robbin that I try the 50Mb/s IPB setting. I did so but still don't see much improvement or change in the noise with lower light. Was shooting at ISO 400 so I should be fairly safe right? Per many other professional shooters I have Sharpness at -5, Contrast -5, Saturation -2. Noise Reduction at 0 as -5 allows too much noise and +5 seems to muddy or soften the image as a whole to me.

Any feedback is welcome on best video settings for GH3

Wishes for the GH6 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17968/wishes-for-the-gh6 Thu, 12 Oct 2017 00:05:54 +0000 AKED 17968@/talks/discussions Everybody is working and talking about the 2.0 and now 2.1 firmware update for the GH5.

But for sure the Panasonic engeneers are alreday working on the GH6. For Panasonic claims and has prooven, that they listen to the customers, let us tell them early in the process of the development, what features we would like to see in the GH6, that can not be implemented in the GH5 through firmware update.

Let me start with a wish for a 2nd screen:

I think it is great to have the controls like waveform, histogram, sound etc. to have all the settings in sight, but as we all know, they take up a lot of space and cover up the video picture on the screen.

So my idea is, to have a second screen on the body where the screen normally rests. So that, when the normal, video screen, is flipped in, they face each other.

I would call it a "service screen", where you can have and see all the helping tools without covering the screen with the picture. All other settings like aputure, ss, ISO etc could also be shown and maybe one can also change the settings of the camera on that screeen. As you like. One should be able to assign, what you want to see on that screen.

I would make it a touch screen as well, so that the camera would have a double touch-screen, so the you can move things to the video screen if you need it, for example when you do overhead work and can not see the service screen but need the wave or sound controls. Once you are back in normal use, you can push them out of the way to the service screen again. If you do not need it, you could switch it off to save battery.

Nowadays, screens are so thin, that I doubt that it would make the camera bigger.

I think this would be a great help to have all the controls in sight, without them covering the main video screen.

Also, NO other Mirrorless or DSLR camera has that feature which would really give Panasonic another advantage over his competitors.

One could also think about transmitting the information of the service screen maybe via bluetooth to a mobile device, so one can have it in sight if a look on the camera is difficult or a 2nd person can have a look or even adjust the settings, while the camera man takes care of the framing.

What do you think about this? Would that make sense and help?

It was originally supposed to be on the 14th but it was too cold and so they ended up rescheduling it.

I don't think I told Google to stabilize the video but last night, I saw that the video was saying "Edit in progress" check it later today and was told the video got stabilized. I guess my video had so many shakes that Google insisted that it be stabilized rather I choose it or not. Still, for all I know, I might have hit it by accident without realizing it.

Shot with the ancient Panasonic AC90 camcorder in 30p and edited using Premiere Pro CC.

GH6 and Varicam GH camera https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13464/gh6-and-varicam-gh-camera Sun, 26 Jul 2015 21:11:56 +0000 endotoxic 13464@/talks/discussions There is a rumor that a panasonic representative from my country told me.

There will be no GH5. It will be called GH6 and it will have all the full sensor redout, and 10bit internal but only on 1080p they said.

Then the other new camera will be a new GH series of camera with super 35mm sensor the varicam one. It will be expensive, but will be video orientend machine. The price of both cameras where not dislosed.

I have and idea that GH6 will be arround $1500. And the varicam GH camera arround $4500 to $5000.

From my point of view, i think ill pay arround 5k for such compact camera with the varicam sensor. And about GH6 it sounds like a winner, bummer its not 4k 10 bit internal, but sounds like a progress.

It's in perfect working order with no scratches on the lens, clear glass with no fungus. It really is like brand new. I am selling as I have recently purchased a new complete lens set.

Looking for quick sale $350 USD including shipping.

Message me directly if interested. stuart.howe@gmail.com

It is one of the few places where the remote coast of Fiordland has road access, although its not generally accessible for private vehicles and requires an hour boat journey to access the road, which is unsealed over a mountain pass. It is a place of extremes, with a resident human population of 2, a sandfly population of at least 2 million, and an average annual rainfall of 8750mm (344 inches). Aside from the scenery, fishing is a major activity, which mainly targets blue cod, groper and crayfish.

I'd appreciate any feedback on the film. Thanks in advance.

G6 or GX7 or...? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9511/g6-or-gx7-or... Fri, 31 Jan 2014 15:48:12 +0000 Manu4Vendetta 9511@/talks/discussions Im planning buy another camera to midyear . But with a budget limit of U$700, with the marketing war I'm not crazy bringing a lot of money for in less than a year and have obsolete equipment.

Currently I have the GH2 with Sanity and a NEX-5N which use 95% for photo still.

The GH2 has a great performance in video, but the latest Lumix issues have improved considerably as the High ISO, less noise. I also interested in 60fps for slow motion; in the GH2 only available in 720p, the NEX let record 60fps in 1080 but the video from Sony isnt as good as Panasonic.

My major candidates are the G6 is a kind of GH2 improved and the glorious focus peaking is a success whether in stills or video. The GX7 having even higher quality (in the level of GH3), I love the design, still photo quality in the level of OMD and NEX . I could not use a monitor for its HDMI output while recording with G6 and GX7, but can via WIFI. Can the GH3 price drops something from here to there, but after having a NEX consider any camera must have focus peaking mandatorily.

Which of them advised me that they see pros and cons in each, or better invest in some good optics for GH2 as 45mm f1.8 as the Zuiko 25mm f1.4 or PanaLeica?

Thanks!

OK, thought I would start a New Years Resolution thread. Just to keep this under control, how about list ONE resolution, WHY you're doing it and HOW. You can also comment on others' resolutions and ask/offer advice on how to keep them - but only if you have listed your own first.

Resolution: Cut down on alcohol consumption.

Why: I'm 43 years old, I have slowed down the drinking in the last few years - I don't have it in me to party like it's 1999 anymore. A few weeks ago a buddy of mine was in town and we went on a gin & tonic rampage. I woke up the next day with a huge gash on my arm and empty beer cans and Mcdonalds wrappers everywhere and no recollection of the previous night. I guess that's better than waking up next to a dead body or a 60 year old hooker but still.

How: I'd be kidding myself to think I could go cold turkey, as that always ends up in a binge. I want to limit my intake to 1-2 glasses of wine or beer a week, and no hard liquor.

The Swiss Knife Camera https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7243/the-swiss-knife-camera Thu, 13 Jun 2013 15:16:03 +0000 anthonybert 7243@/talks/discussions Hi everyone,

This post might come a bit as a surprise but I can assure that this a serious matter. You also don't know me but I'm happy to answer any questions

I would ask people to refrain themselves from being over negative or talking for the sake of it.

In my life, I have seen the evolution of cameras from Super 8 BOLEX to today's one. Did I shoot anything worth talking about, short answer is no. what I love is film and technology. Dare I say good and sexy technology!!! I wish I could make my own film but let's face it I'm probably no Spielberg, on the other hand I love design and technology and have been successful at it.

I have been reading forums since they actually exist and I was also very involved in the 35mm adapters and made my own. So my quest like many of you is to have a camera that gives you, not a cinematic image but the image you need to have for the project you are working on. But let's face it, a camera is not only about the image, is it?

Now this is the way I see things and by saying it I do not intend to offend anyone, it just feels to me like the plain truth.

Big corporation like Sony, Panasonic, Canon, Nikon will always give us a bit more or bit less but never the perfect tool as they need to ensure future sales. Of course we can hack some of them but is it a solution in the long run?

High end, Arri and Red cost a fortune and it not accessible to many of us.

Blackmagic comes around and produce a sexy little beast but it's a box with some fancy features and in my opinion it's lacking of some features that makes it not so cool to use. this is not THE CAMERA in my eyes.

So where does it leave us? I know that some beautiful film can be shot with DSLRs and other cameras but how cool would it be to have the Swiss knife camera?

So can we pull it off? Well I can't answer that. Can we try… Well we have to, don't we?

So here is my "Crazy" idea…

I would like to find the people to be able to build such a camera. Sensor Guru… Electronic Guru… Software Guru… Optic Guru… Sound/electronic Guru… Storage Guru…

I'll keep the design part for myself and another person already on it. But Ideas are always welcome.

If you believe that you are one those guys please send me a personal message. If you are but want to know more, then just ask your question on that thread so everybody can see my answer.

So that we are clear. This is not a job offer as such. There will be no salary. So you will ask, what's in it for me?

Well, that's simple, it's fully funded by myself, and for those of you elected to be part of the project, you will each get a substantial stake in the company. Remember this is not for everyone as you will need to put some time on top of your day job so you need to be very passionate about it.

I am based in UK on the M4 corridor between London and Bristol. I would like the candidate to be in this area so it would be easier for meetings but then again if you have what it takes and live outside of the UK, we can always Skype each…

The goal is pure and simple. a camera so modular that everyone should find happiness in it. The software will be open source so everyone can have go and add plugins to it.

Price target, as cheap as possible but of course those people that will put the work in will want to make money out their shares so we will see about that when the time comes.

Features?

Well do I really need to repeat what as been said by you guys a million time?

Short non exhaustive list:

Global shutter - Sensor size? dunno yet! Plenty of DR for sure. internal ND filters Interchangeable lens mounts No moire, No Aliasing 24, 25, 30, 60, 120, 240 Frames per second. The higher rates might just be burst but that will do. Standard removable batteries Balanced sound, 48v, proper mechanical knobs for sound adjustment and dedicated panel. SDI - HDMI outputs. SSD storage

Design - Super ergonomic, remember this is a tools for people to work.

Do i need to go on????

Anyway guys.. Please be constructive.

Thank you

"The cards can take the kinds of punishment that we often associate with rugged gear, such as temperatures from -13F to 185F, immersion in 3.3 feet of water for half an hour and the usual steep drops. It's beyond this that the resistance levels become truly exotic: the cards are also built to survive zaps of electricity, proximity to magnets and exposure to X-rays. If it all becomes too much to bear, the design will even fuse on the inside to prevent fire burning the card from within. Those who like what they see will only have to decide whether or not they want the SDAB range's 95MB/s read speeds and 80MB/s writes or are willing to settle for the SDUB line's respective 90MB/s and 45MB/s transfers. "

sounds like they're prepping for a new weather sealed camera, eh? ;)

Which hack is this? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3341/which-hack-is-this Fri, 25 May 2012 14:09:07 +0000 crunchy 3341@/talks/discussions It seems that I mixed the cards when importing the footage. I appologize for the "alarm". The text below is, therefore, without any meaning.

I've got a new GH2 from Amazon and wanted to check the difference between two hacks on two GH2s with same lenses (20mm Pana). I have 3D rig, so they can start recording simultaneously.

My intention was to check the difference between unhacked camera (just got from Amazon) and the one with Sanity5 patch. The result was somehow unexpected, since the files from a "new" camera were larger in average. I've checked them with StreamParser and here is what I've got from freshly bought camera on Amazon (see the first picture). The already hacked camera (with Sanity 5) resulted with the file which parameters are shown in the second picture.

Am I right that the newly bought camera was already hacked? There is 30min time limit on this newly bought camera, but it doesn't look to me the original FW. Does anybody know which hack is used? GOP seems to be 18 and all I frames are 1170000 bytes in size (in my opinion quite large). The cameras were in 24H mode.

As noted above, it was false alarm. Left picture is Sanity 5, and right picture is factory default video.

And big thanks to @Vitaliy_Kiselev - You are a true legend!
