When using an external monitor during recording, spanning gets interrupted no matter what spanning patch is being used. The GH2 just stops recording.

Accordingly to the last response I got from V. Kiselev in this forum was that it hasn't been fixed. Then, accurate focus is the biggest issue I have been encountering with the GH2, specially for run and gun type of shooting. I'm hoping that the GH3 doesn't have this issue.

Infra Red Headphones, transmitters and receivers https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5058/infra-red-headphones-transmitters-and-receivers Wed, 31 Oct 2012 20:09:28 +0000 goanna 5058@/talks/discussions Among the common causes of camera damage is the operator walking away from the tripod with headphones still on. IR headphones can be useful on set as well as at home or in the car, too. They have excellent sound reproduction and prices are dropping.

image

For location work, the usual 6 meter range is close enough from camera to headphones, but the mic and transmitter may be further away from the camera.

Look for at at least 10 meter headphones on Ebay

Transmitters often come cheaply and with better range. I got a 12V, 10 meter model for $12.00. Look on Ebay too.

Transmitters and headphones can be bought together as a set. Of course, several crew members can receive the same sound via phones.

This is just one more example of domestic equipment which has improved (for in-car DVDs) so much that in can trickle-up to pro applications. Of course, if you're like me you'll find domestic uses as well. (Think kids, peace at home, long drives...)

There are some domestic and car appliances (eg NextBase) which already include IR transmitters. Almost all seem to share the standard stereo IR transmission frequencies of Right: 2.8 MHz. Left: 2.3 MHz.

You can get IR receivers, too. The old Sony 6V IFT-R10 also comes with good quality composite video as well as line-level audio suitable for monitoring. Maybe somebody has experience with camera-mounted IR receivers for audio signal input.

The VGA shooting mode under MANUAL MOVIE MODE is gone after I connect my GH2 to a monitor via HDMI. Other options are gone too and the only ones left are FSH and FH. Is this a limitation of HDMI output? Or is there a hack to enable other manual modes?

I was just wondering which methods some of you may have to make markings on your display (or even external monitor) for guidance for framing cinema aspect ratio?

The Guide lines sadly can not have two horizontal bars as far as i know of.. I was hoping the hack would introduce some type of marking somewhere down the line- but since that does not seem to be possible, lets hear your method :)

Thanks guys

My review:

From hardware standpoint long time ago it was good cheap LCD screen for movie makers.

Processor : MST719DU-LF LCD : CLAA102NA0ACW (1024x600 resolution, LED backlight) Battery : 7.4V 2300mAh

Two speakers and headphone output (with good metal socket) to check sound. I don't go to tuner, USB input, SD card player, etc as it is not very important here. To be short, you can check your JPEG files just by inserting SDHC card. But you better not to.

Image quality:

Average for portable devices. I like the colors (only for specific LCD panel used, later ones seems to be worse). Unit has ability to set color temperature (four presets, not VGA it is adjustable very precise) and many other parameters for HDMI input. Menu can be set to be almost transparent and position can be adjusted.

From software standpoint it is not all good. First. HDMI connection must be slightly improved by manufacturer. I suggest to set HDMI format to 720p60 in GH1 menus (as this works fine most of the time). Sometimes GH1 go to 2-10s cycle trying to establish HDMI connection (turn modes wheel to go out of this and try again) on 1080i or auto modes. Same happens with my HD cameras. After all screen flashes it starts to work fine. Second and most important. Unit has small overscan. So, framing is slightly off and also sharpness is not perfect (but ok for focusing). Using VGA it don't have any overscan, so it is firmware related HDMI only thing.

My unit is mounted on telescoping arm.

I really suggest to check much better monitors at

Not really cheap, with $400 price, low resolution screen, and with quite a weight.

Reson why we see it is that 9.7" IPS screens are very cheap now. They are made for tablets (now, mostly Chinese).

If you feel otherwise, Vitaliy, please close this thread and I can copy this info over.

Anyways, I just found this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/743798-REG/Manhattan_LCD_HD5_S_HD5_5_6_Field_Monitor.html

A couple days ago, I am pretty sure this was going for $599, now it seems to have jumped to $709.. It may have been the one without the camera plate that I saw for $599, which is now $633. Either way, I am considering as an option to monitor my GH2, as I have not been satisfied with the built in LCD, and the viewfinder can be difficult to use on a tripod with various other gear attached, or even on my shoulder rig.

The only other options I know of at this point for monitors of this resolution are:

  1. The SmallHD DP6, which is $800 with out any accessories (ie camera plate, sunshade).
  2. H056 (aka H005), which has a great price of around $250 or less, though seems to have some various issues, despite having great technology in it's screen.
  3. Brand new Marshall V-LCD56MD which goes for $800 + $23 for a battery plate
  4. The Manhattan HD5 (as linked above) for $710 with battery place, though no sunshade. (7" and 9" versions available for a bit more, too)
  5. An Ikan 5.6" for $900 is about to come out, though did not see exact specs yet.

And that's all I know of so far. Most of these are also available with SDI for an increase in cost, though for my purposes, HDMI is what I am after. Seems like if someone could make a 100% functioning 1280xXXX monitor for $500 or there about's it would sell like hotcakes. The H056 is so close, just too many issues at this point. If they get solved via firmware, that's my monitor, if not, and I cannot wait too long, I will go for one of the other options.

Are there other monitors of this spec out there that I am missing? At least in the sub $800 range? I am sure there are much more expensive options (ie TV Logic), though have not seen any others in the lower price range.

So suggest to check present line of LG 3D monitors (all modern are passive now, except two high end that are glasses free):

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sop=16&_fcid=168&gbr=1&_sacat=0&_nkw=LG+3D+monitor&_clu=2&LH_PrefLoc=2&rt=nc

Some are cheap TN bases, some are MVA, some very good IPS. With sizes from 23" to 27". And some are actually more like TV, with full tuner and build in player capabilities, common to any modern LG TV set.

Good IPS based 27", like DM2752D, is all you need for everyday amateur work with 3D footage.

Broadcast Monitor for Color Correction vs Affordable Alternatives https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2031/broadcast-monitor-for-color-correction-vs-affordable-alternatives Mon, 16 Jan 2012 21:05:42 +0000 qwerty123 2031@/talks/discussions Here's a question that I think many in the video and indie-filmmaking community don't have a straightforward and analytical answer to....:

QUESTION===> If your video / film content is not aimed at TV distribution but only for the web and also film-festivals, how crucial is it to have a broadcast monitor for color correction? Are there good, affordable (less than $1,500 or abouts) alternatives to a professional broadcast monitor that give nearly as good results in color critical work? Is there a good source of info on this?

What about a monitor like this: http://www.necdisplay.com/p/desktop-monitors/pa271w-bk

Its recommended to get 1/16th gap and one side for easy install and removal.
They do clear options as well as options for touchscreens.
Like XH that is 25% glare reduction and thin. Thicker is the XT which reduces 65% glare but softens the image somewhat and the XF options that is thicker again, 65% glare reduction and softens your image.

I find this is a better option visually that purspex on small screens. I just adds that layer of protection for that opps moment.
see this review.

Sony CLM V-55 Monitor https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/587/sony-clm-v-55-monitor Thu, 04 Aug 2011 15:40:15 +0000 marks 587@/talks/discussions Main purpose in buying was for my 2nd cam person. She had been having trouble focusing our FX1's and now with GH2's I was worried. I had looked at the offerings from Small HD and others but just couldn't get my head around the cost....especially since my primary goal was focus assist. When the Sony model came out I looked at it a while then finally decided to buy it. I got it from Amazon for $399....figuring I could return it if it was junk or keep it if it was nice. Turns out it was a little of both.
First thing to note is that it does not come with any means to power it. You're on your own. I went to Batteries Plus and bought a 3000 mAh battery and charger for about $50. I have run the monitor for as long as 4-5 hours and have not had it die. I haven't tested to see how long it will run.
It arrived the same day I had a dance recital so my first test was also a working test.
First thing I noticed as I was setting it up was the colors. They looked amazing on the monitor.....except for the reds. The stage curtains were that nice deep shade of red.....but on the monitor they were brown. No manner of adjustment could make them red. I spent an hour or more tinkering with it before giving up and adjusting it so all the colors but the reds looked good.
Peaking worked really well.....and there is also a pixel magnification function that zooms in on the picture to help with focus. I haven't really used that function as the peaking works very well.
The fold up lens hood is also nice. Works well in most outdoor situations....though if you get the sun to your back forget it. The screen is reflective so that is a small problem outdoors....but not a deal breaker.
After some reading on the internet concerning the reds, I decided to return it for a new one. The couple of reviews that were out seemed to not have a problem with the reds. One nice thing about the return was the price was now lower....$322.00!
The new one arrived and I had the opportunity to use it again at the same venue. The reds were MUCH better....though still slightly leaning towards brown. The consensus of those I have talked to seems to be that you can't expect perfection at that price.
All in all I am happy with it. My 2nd shooter doesn't have any problems with focus now, and that is the main reason I bought it. If you need critical color I don't think I would recommend it. If you need focus assist and just want to have something bigger to look at then it works.
Would I buy one again?? Matter of fact I did. I liked it so much I bought another for my cam.

Take Apart GH1 LCD for External Monitor https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1050/take-apart-gh1-lcd-for-external-monitor Wed, 28 Sep 2011 13:48:58 +0000 jefforig 1050@/talks/discussions
I searched around but did not find an answer for this. Has anyone tried this?

Basically, take apart the LCD on the GH1 and use the cabling or wiring to attach it to an external monitor.

I don't need HD output, I just want it for framing purposes when the GH1 is placed on a small crane.

Or has anyone physically taken apart the LCD?
Is there a tear down of the GH1 somewhere? (I googled but did not find it)
If so, were you able to put it back together?
Was the wiring plug and play or was the wiring soldered in?

Is there some other way to do external monitoring while recording if the camera is a small distance away, like on a crane?
I have read ideas about using a small cheap camera and film the lcd.

Thank you.

P.S. I was not sure if this was the right Category. Feel free to move if necessary.
