Just got this thing:

Initial impressions after playing with it for short:

I really like quality, all but filter frames and their side holding stuff are from metal.
Feels really sturdy.
Has four flags (top, bottom, and two side flags).
Flags (and all mattebox :-) ) are much better than indian stuff, thicker, better made, internal sides are covered with dark velvet.
Right now it feels like one of the best gear purchases.

I'll later try to review it in more detail, but after more real work.

Btw they no longer have this awful screws heads on top of inside velvet on flags, now they use proper screws with flat heads that are below velvet.

Several new cameras were announced today, and most of which will need a filter system.

As luck would have it, I am selling mine:

I've had great results with this set on Full Frame, S35, and Micro Four Thirds cameras.

Package includes:

1 x Cavision 3x3 Matte Box Package - Includes side and top flags, and "nuns knickers".

4 x Cavision 58mm Conical Step-up Ring with 85mm Outside Diameter - Allows lenses with a 58mm filter thread to engage directly with the matte box. The cone design helps to prevent vignetting. If you have lenses with a smaller filter thread, you can use step up rings to attach these.

1 x Cavision 85mm to 72mm Threaded Metal Deep Offset Step-Up Adapter Ring - For wide angle lenses with filter threads of 72mm (can be adapted with step rings). This gets the front element of the lens as close as possible to the filter to prevent vignetting. I've used it successfully with an 18mm lens on my 5D3 without vignetting.

6 x Cavision MBH3X3M 3x3 Metal Filter Tray - Much sturdier then the plastic filter trays that come with the matte box.

1 x Cavision MBH3X4M 3x4 Metal Filter Tray - For using ND grad filters.

1 x LockCircle Slider Base with Support Mount (Y) - This allows the matte box to be mounted to rods, while allowing them to slide back and forth for lenses that extend when zooming or focusing.

1 x Schneider 4 x 4" Five Slot Filter Pouch - Fits four filter trays nicely for fast deployment.

1 x Schneider Neutral Density (ND) 0.3 Filter (3 x 3")

1 x Schneider Neutral Density (ND) 0.6 Filter (3 x 3")

FS Genus Matte Box with Tiffen and Formatt ND filters

I am selling my Genus Clamp-on Wide Matte Box. This is a very light wide angle matte box with a 4 x 4" fixed filter tray and a 4 x 4" rotatable filter tray. It comes with a 72mm adaptor ring. As you can see from the pictures the matte box is in a very good condition. You can see from the close-up picture that the French Flag has a minimal dent at the front, which does not affect the overall performance.

I bought the Genus Matte Box for £400 in 2012 and used it with my GH2. I am selling this together with a 4x4" Tiffen ND 0.3 and a 4x4" Formatt ND Grad SE 0.6 filter. The filters are in very good condition and there are no scratches. I purchased both of them for £346 from CVP in 2012. The price for the whole package is £350. The reason for the sale is that I am now using a C100 with built-in ND filters. I am happy to cover shipping costs within the UK.

GH4 + cine mini-primes: good Matte Box and Follow Focus options?

I'm looking forward to receiving the new Veydra set when they ship. Up til now I've been using the Panasonic 12-35 and 35-100 zooms (with a variable ND when needed) on an Indisystem shoulder rig (with TV Logic 5.6" monitor when needed). I would like to have the option to add a Matte Box and single sided Follow Focus. Does anyone have suggestions for quality, light weight MB and FF that would work well with these primes and possibly also the zooms?

Hardware search: rotating step ring for mattebox use with rotating lens fronts

My mattebox is mounted to a rod system with a sliding base from LockCircle, so lenses that extend when focusing or zooming are not a problem (the mattebox slides on the rods). But lenses with rotating fronts still pose a problem and I'm trying to find a some kind of anti-friction or bearing-based intermediary ring to put between the matte box and the lens's filter thread.

Before anyone suggests it, I know that I could remove the glass from a circular polarizer and use that, but I don't think that it would be smooth enough. I'd like to see if there is anything that is specifically designed for this.

Just had word from Julie in TrusMT that they will be releasing a larger Mattebox with a rear opening of up to 140mm at the end of September.

This is fab news for those of us who use lenses bigger than the 100mm max on current models.

I'm looking for a good MB that is compatible with 4mm thick filters, and this might be just what's needed. Nice updates compared to the older mattebox, dual 360 degree rotation and filter holders that are both 4x4 and 4x5.65. Lanparte's possibly only weak point was their mattebox, they might have just changed that.

It's probably worth asking Lanparte a few questions but could be a mighty fine option on the face of it.

Heliopan Vario ND Lens Hood Solutions?

After being less than happy with the loss of sharpness of my LCW Fader ND I just purchased a Heliopan Vario ND 77mm filter from B&H and a 77mm lens hood. I have a very cheap and crappy matte box (junk) and was in two minds whether to buy a proper matte box or go with the Heliopan Vario and a lens hood in order to keep things more compact.

In the end I decided to go with the Heliopan... (a decision I think I'm now regretting especially considering the price!)

Upon receiving it I discovered the Heliopan has no front filter thread. (The LCW Fader ND does) What annoys me is one of the reviews of the Heliopan Vario on the B&H website refers to the Heliopan having front threads... THEY DON'T!!

Short of a new matte box does anyone have any solution for fitting a hood to a Heliopan Vario or am I just dreaming? If I can't find a solution I will contact B&H and point out the misleading review concerning front threads and send it back to them.

Mattebox Choices

Hi guys. I've been looking around at various mattebox options. I've had a nose through the usual suspects - Chrosziel (Phew!!!), Redrock, Genus etc and have seen a lot of Indian and Chinese kit on eBay. When looking for some of the Chinese kit - which IMO seems to look far better engineered than the Indian stuff, i've been led to your site which has some interesting points of view.

Anyway. I am in the market for a Mattbox, Rails and Baseplate and Follow focus.

I've looked at the LanParTe, Cinematics, Wondlan and Wieldy producs as well as some others which look a bit too cheap (and on further inspection the seem to built to that price as well).

I have a need for a mattebox with a rear opening of at least 105mm as i intend to use the box with a Century wide angle lens on a Z5 (which is that wide). I also need quite a wide box so that i don't get any vignetting with this lens.

You guys seem to have a lot of experience with these products. I quite like the look of the LPT stuff, especially the follow focus, but maybe you have different ideas.

I would be most grateful for any advice you may have on this.

Mattebox height adjustment part?

So I´ve got my Trusmt MB and realized, that I will need some kind of variable height adjustment to have it working on all my lenses on my Ginirig. I found only this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Height-Riser-rail-systems-follow-focus-mattebox-/190353971566 but that one comes from India and due to bad experiences I´d like to avoid to buy from there.

Does anyone know a store which offers something variable? Or how do you deal with the heights of you rigs when it comes to Matteboxes?

I recently bought a used Century Matte Box, I want to buy a ring that holds donuts as this one works but is a bit damaged ... Even spare donuts are of interest ... Even if you have a tip where i can order spare parts for this matte box ?! I don't know the model or product number for this matte box ... It came with 12mm non standard rails ... I think the model is: DS-MB-44-00 but I'm not sure ...

I got the TrusMT mattebox special deal a few months ago and have bought some Formatt filters to go along with them. ND filters and a circular polarizer. You get an idea of what these filters do in the clip I made. Curious to hear/see what other 4x4 filters are used with the (new) matteboxes. Formatt is not cheap but I believe it's the cheapest glass that also has a good reputation. ND Filter Strength?

I'm looking into buying a 4x4 ND filter for my Trusmt mattebox that is coming. I'm trying to decide what strength to start with. I plan to use it shooting outdoors in the summer. I'm also getting a polarizer. My experience with the GH2 outdoors is that the overexposure is very strong in the sun, sometimes requiring to stop the lens down to min aperture (f16 or f22). My feeling is that I should get one strong ND to go with my polarizer (polarizer should reduce about 1.5 stops). Was thinking about the Cavision ND 1.8 (equal to ND64... or 6 stops). That's a pretty strong one.... anyone have experience with this?

PS - I'm not really interested in vari nd filters, so please don't recommend that. I'm using a mattebox.
