I read that wider than 35mm RF (Leica) lenses doesn't perform well on m43 (for some optical reasons), does anyone have a wide reflex lens that works well ? Video-Friendly Lenses for Lumix DSLRs https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/859/video-friendly-lenses-for-lumix-dslrs Mon, 05 Sep 2011 14:46:59 +0000 LPowell 859@/talks/discussions

* Stabilization and control of camera movement
* Matte box shading of camera lens
* Direct, tactile control of lens aperture
* Follow focus control of lens focus

Lenses that adapt well to these requirements will possess a combination of subtle features that are often omitted from manufacturers' data sheets and overlooked in published reviews. While vintage lenses provide full manual controls, their compact, old-school design often makes them unsuitable for use on a rig. At the other extreme, modern trends in auto-focus lens design have eliminated a number of manual lens features that remain essential to videographers. In many cases, the most usable lenses for video come from early generations of auto-focus lenses that combined vintage manual controls with modern lens design.

Here's my list of features that make a lens video-friendly:

* Manual aperture ring
* Direct-coupled focus ring
* Proper focus ring rotation
* Non-rotating outer barrel (internal focus)
* Non-extending outer barrel (internal zoom/focus)
* Constant field of view
* Constant f-stop aperture
* Rotational zoom ring

While few lenses possess all the above features, a good video lens will make up for any deficiencies with solid performance in other aspects.

* Manual aperture ring

Lenses that lack a manual aperture ring are problematic for video.

Vintage manual-focus lenses all have manual aperture rings, and most can be set to an auto-iris mode for in-camera control of aperture in shutter-priority mode. Many auto-focus lenses have eliminated the manual aperture ring, relying entirely on camera controls to set aperture in manual mode. This includes all Lumix, Zuiko Digital, Canon EOS, and Nikon G-type auto-focus lenses, as well as most currently manufactured lenses by Tokina, Tamron, and Sigma.

* Direct-coupled focus ring

Lenses with an electronic focus ring are problematic for video.

While all auto-focus lenses can be manually focused, not all of them are truly manual. The focus rings on Lumix, Zuiko Digital, and many Sigma HSM lenses are not directly coupled to the lens' internal focusing mechanisms. As a result, their focus rings continue to rotate uselessly beyond max and min focus limits. Lenses like this cannot be used on rigs with follow focus attachments, since focus ring position is completely uncalibrated.

* Proper focus ring rotation

Lenses with contrary focus ring rotation are problematic for video.

When mounted on a rig with a follow focus attachment, the focus ring rotation of the lens will determine the rotation direction of the follow focus wheel. Regardless of which side of the lens the FF wheel is mounted on, it's important that focus-pulling direction be consistent among all lenses used on the rig.

With Lumix, Zuiko, EOS, and Sigma lenses, infinity focus is at the counter-clockwise end of focus ring rotation. With Nikon and Pentax lenses, infinity focus is at the clockwise end of focus ring rotation. Tokina, Tamron, and Samyang/Rokinon lenses are usually built with the appropriate focus ring rotation for each type of lens mount. Sigma lenses, however, always rotate in the Lumix direction, regardless of the lens mount. For follow focus use, I prefer lenses that rotate in the Nikon direction because it pulls focus closer as I rotate the FF wheel toward me.

* Non-extending outer barrel

Lenses with an extending outer barrel are problematic for video.

Most zoom lenses, both manual and auto-focus, are designed with outer lens barrels that extend when the lens is zoomed and/or focused. While the barrels on most vintage prime lenses do not rotate, they usually extend when focused. A lens whose length changes can be awkward to use on a rig with a matte box.

* Non-rotating outer barrel

Lenses with a rotating outer barrel are problematic for video.

Most vintage zoom lenses are built with the focus ring on the outer lens barrel. This causes any attached lens filter to rotate as the lens is focused, making these lenses unsuitable for use with polarizer and anamorphic attachments. Most modern auto-focus lenses use internal focusing mechanisms that avoid these issues.

* Constant field of view

Lenses that breathe noticeably while focusing are problematic for video.

The focal length of almost all lenses will change slightly as the lens is focused. This effect, known as "lens breathing", alters the framing of a shot when pulling focus, making the lens appear to zoom as well as shift focus. This can ruin a shot if it is noticeable enough to be distracting.

* Constant f-stop aperture

Lenses with variable f-stops are problematic for video.

On many zoom lenses, the actual aperture will vary when the lens is set at its widest f-stops. This will cause zooming at wide f-stops to visibly affect exposure settings, which can ruin a video clip.

* Rotational zoom ring

Lenses with push-pull zoom rings are problematic for video.

Virtually all modern zoom lenses use individual focus and zoom rings. Many vintage zoom lenses were designed with a combined zoom/focus ring which zooms by sliding along the length of the lens barrel. Lenses like this are usually impractical to use on rigs with follow focus attachments.

In the next post I've reviewed a list of video-friendly manual-focus lenses that I've found well-suited for use with Lumix DSLRs. In addition, you can find a list of auto-focus zoom lenses for Lumix DSLRs at the following link:

The global optics brand, Samyang Optics (http://www.samyanglensglobal.com) today announced the long-awaited launch of two autofocus lenses: 14mm F2.8 and 50mm F1.4 lenses for Sony E mount Mirrorless cameras with full frame sensor size. The new 14mm and 50mm are the widest and brightest lenses in their classand offer superb quality images to photographers. This launching expands the boundaries of Samyang Optics photo lens line-up from manual focus only, to now include autofocus lenses.

Optimised Optical Design as Full Frame Mirrorless Camera Lens

Both 14mm F2.8 ED AS IF UMC and 50mm F1.4 AS IF UMC are specifically designed to work in harmony with full frame mirrorless cameras in Sony E mount. The flow of light is devised based on the uniqueness of the distance from glass to sensor in mirrorless cameras to create optimal performance. Along with portability of mirrorless lenses, the 14mm F2.8 and 50mm F1.4 are compatible with full frame sensors to deliver the wideness and sharpnessof image to photographers.

The 67mm filter diameter brings the maximum amount of light into the lens to create the best work of light in photography. The 14mm F2.8 is the widest angle available in the market and the F1.4 of 50mm and F2.8 of 14mm apertures are by far the brightest of full frame mirrorless lenses, offeringa beautiful bokeh effect and the best quality images under various exposure conditions.

Based on Samyang Optics’ exceptional optical technology, aspherical lenses have been included in both lenses to minimise aberration and unnecessary light dispersion, delivering high resolution from the centre to the corners of the image.

AF Performance and Ergonomic Design Based on Class-Leading Technology

These new products will be the first autofocus lenses in over 40 years of Samyang’s class-leading core optics technologies. Samyang has captured the essence of world leading image technology with their manual focus lenses and reinterpreted it into autofocus lenses. Photographers now can enjoy the prime manual lens image quality and autofocus lens. These new 14mm F2.8 and 50mm F1.4 are compatible with both phase detect and contrast detect sensors to operate fast and accurate focus detection.

The 67mm filter diameter is also the result of years of R&D for best handling, by adding stability to the photo-taking experience. Also the minimal and sleek design and metal-housing solidify the build quality with the internal focus system.

These two new autofocus lenses from Samyang Optics will be exhibited at the Photo & Imaging 2016 Show in Seoul, South Korea. The lenses will be globally available from July 2016. Further details, pricing and availability will follow.

Olympus adds to its powerfully simple and growing PEN family with the first fully-compatible interchangeable Micro Four Thirds lens to incorporate an electronic motorized zoom. The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-50mm F3.5-6.3 EZ (35mm equivalent 24–100mm) delivers smooth, quiet zooming that gives you versatility, portability and maximizes the performance of the Olympus PEN® compact system cameras.

The sophisticated new lens has a zoom ratio of approximately 4.2x, allowing photographers to capture anything from detailed, wide-angle group shots to medium telephoto-range images so you can get up close and personal for intimate portraits of children and pets – even indoors. The photographer can control the zooming speed by turning the barrel – slowly for drama, quickly for performance, or at an intermediate rate. Manual zooming is also available for those looking to take full control.

In macro mode, which can be set by pushing the zoom ring forward while depressing the macro button on the side of the lens, focusing is possible between 8 and 20 inches for close-up shooting with a maximum image magnification of 0.72X (35mm camera equivalent). The L-Fn (Lens Function) button suspends the autofocusing operation temporarily to avoid unintended focusing on obstacles that appear suddenly between the camera and the subject.

Perfect for brilliant still images and high-definition (HD) video capture, the Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-50mm F3.5-6.3 EZ has also been enhanced with a linear motor that drives smooth and quiet autofocusing for stress-free shooting.

New lens elements and glass materials ensure the clearest possible imaging performance, and the proven dust and splashproof mechanism originally featured in the Four Thirds SHG (Super High Grade) series lenses is now incorporated for the first time in a Micro Four Thirds System lens. Multiple sealing rings, fitted throughout the lens body, prevent water splashes and dust from penetrating, making the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-50mm f3.5-6.3 EZ a versatile zoom lens for the toughest conditions.

Sigma Corporation of America, a leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider of some of the world's most impressive lines of lenses, cameras and flashes, today announced its newest addition to the Sigma Art line of lenses for full-frame cameras, the 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM.

True to its categorization as a Sigma Art lens, the new 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM is designed for artistic expression and top-notch image quality. This versatile lens covers the basic shooting range from wide to medium tele with an inner focusing system that eliminates front lens rotation, enhancing the lens stability and allowing the use of circular polarizing filters. It also boasts a constant aperture of F4, and contains Sigma’s proprietary Optical Stabilizer (OS) technology to compensate for camera shake. Moreover, it was designed to surpass the required quality inspection of every Global Vision lens with Sigma’s own modulation transfer function (MTF) “A1” measuring system to create new optical standard to align with the high-spec cameras on today’s market.

“For many years, Sigma users have been seeking a standard zoom lens in this range,” said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, president of Sigma Corporation of America. “The 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM is yet another example of Sigma listening to its users and delivering new and innovative products with the highest image quality.”

Amir-Hamzeh added that this new lens combines the largest possible fixed aperture to zoom ratio that will maintain optimal integrity for many kinds of photography, including landscapes, architecture, portraiture and still-life. With a minimum focusing distance of 45cm and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.6, this lens is also excellent for close-up photography. High-performance glass elements, including SLD, FLD, which is equal to fluorite, and glass- molded single- and double-sided aspheric lenses have been included into the optical system to prevent aberration, field curvature, distortions and color aberration. The 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM lens is also able to suppress chromatic aberration very effectively at the telephoto-end, and can achieve superior image quality throughout the zoom range. Unlike lenses with similar specifications, this lens overcomes low peripheral brightness. Although it is designed for full frame cameras, it also works with APS-C sensors, giving an increase to focal length.

The lens’ Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) ensures a silent, high-speed auto focus function and enables full-time manual focusing capability. The 24-105mm is also compatible with Sigma’s USB dock allowing photographers to update its firmware and change focus parameters using Sigma's Optimization Pro software. It is also compatible with Sigma’s recently announced Mount Conversion Service.

"With two new lenses announced today, our growing E-mount lens line-up now includes 33 full-frame models and 51 lenses in total. The 10th model from our flagship G Master series, the new 600mm F4 raises the bar for speed, mobility and control in a super-telephoto prime lens," said Yann Salmon Legagneur, Director of Product Marketing, Digital Imaging at Sony Europe. "Combining the extensive 600mm reach with features like 20 fps shooting and AF/AE calculations at 60 times per second on the α9 or extremely high resolution, high speed performance on the α7R III allow professional photographers to create images that were simply not possible to capture before."

Fast, Precise and Quiet Autofocus

To take best advantage of the highly evolved autofocus systems of Sony's latest full-frame E-mount cameras, the new FE 600mm F4 GM OSS lens features two XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors that drive the lens' focus group to provide fast, precise AF and reliable subject tracking. These motors are supported by specially developed motion algorithms to minimise lag and instability, as well as to control noise levels, resulting in exceptionally quick, accurate and quiet autofocus performance, allowing the lens to capture dynamic, fast moving athletes or wildlife with ease.

Superb G Master Image Quality and Bokeh

As a member of Sony's flagship G Master series lenses, this new large aperture super-telephoto prime lens features an incredible level of image quality and detail, with outstanding contrast and resolution maintained all the way to the corners of the image. The unique optical design includes a large XA (extreme aspherical) and an ED (extra-low dispersion) element that effectively suppress all common telephoto lens aberrations, plus three fluorite elements that help to minimise chromatic aberration and suppress any amount of colour bleeding. Sony's latest bokeh simulation technologies and XA element are also utilised to control spherical aberration and help achieve exquisite bokeh.

The lens also features an 11-blade circular aperture mechanism that contributes to the high quality of bokeh in images, and has been coated with Sony's original Nano AR coating to suppress any unwanted reflections, glare, or ghosting in images.

The new FE 600mm F4 GM OSS is compatible with Sony's 1.4x and 2.0x E-mount tele-converters, producing outstanding imaging performance at extended focal lengths[iii] while maintaining fast, precise AF performance.

Lightweight, Balanced Design

Weighing in at only approx. 3040g, the new super-telephoto prime lens is the lightest in its classi, providing a level of portability and manoeuvrability that has never been achieved before in a lens of its style. Based on technology from the acclaimed FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS lens, the lightweight design of the new 600mm lens is achieved through the usage of three fluorite elements, with a reduced number of elements deployed at the front of the barrel. Magnesium alloy is also used throughout the lens to help minimise weight and bulk.

Also inherited from FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS, the new 600mm lens features a lens design that is not front-heavy, reducing moment of inertia that resists rotation, ensuring quicker, more precise panning when shooting handheld or on a monopod.

Durability, Reliability and Control

To withstand the harsh conditions of sporting events and wildlife photography, Sony's new FE 600mm F4 GM OSS is built with a durable magnesium alloy and a strong, lightweight carbon fibre hood. The lens is also dust and moisture resistant[iv], and its front element is coated with fluorine to resist dirt and fingerprints.

There is also an ample number of hard controls on the lens, including customisable focus-hold buttons in four different locations on the lens barrel, which can be programmed for control of features, if desired. There is also a 'Full-Time DMF' switch to immediately engage manual focus at any point, and a focus ring that features Linear Response MF for fine, responsive manual focus.

Additionally, the new lens includes built-in optical stabilisation for dynamic action and three different 'Mode' settings, including a Mode 3[v] setting with an advanced algorithm that ensures easier framing when following moving subjects. It also features a function ring with selectable 'Preset' and 'Function' settings, and a drop-in filter slot that accepts ø 40.5mm ND and other filter types, as well as the optional VF-DCPL1 Drop-in Circular Polarising Filter. The VF-DCPL1 filter can be rotated to achieve the desired polarisation while installed in the lens.

The FE 600mm F4 GM OSS will ship in Europe in August 2019, priced at approximately £12,000 and €14,000
