What the plug does is simply stretch a frame to the desired aspect ratio.

The idea behind the plugin is simply that sometimes, it can be advantageous to use the full sensor in 4:3 and then stretch in a 'clever' way afterwards. The included images show an original image in 4:3, stretched 16:9 and stretched 16:9 with a distortion grid overlay and the protected region shown in green. The plugin is quite customizable (stretching, size and position of protected region plus some bells and whistles) but the default settings should work in most cases.

It currently only works under Windows but in both AE and Premiere (6.0 or later), we expect to compile it for Mac eventually.

If you feel like this is a good idea and you would like to help us with testing, send me a short PM. We would like feedback on: bugs, usability, suggested features and settings.

As this is a hobby project no money will be involved :-)

The color timing is not done, and the voiceover is placeholder, but is the general structure working for you? Do you feel like we should give more technical details about the product on the video? Thanks for your time

Very happy with this film produced for an oil company to commemorate over 35 years of production in the North Sea, and to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.

Filmed with only a GH4 with speedboosted 24-105 lens and a gopro. (Had to travel light due to airfreight restrictions) No sliders, stablisers or even a monopod (deck vibrates constantly)

Even timelapse shots had to be warp stabilised to cure some of the movement (caused by crashing waves and high winds)

Hope you all enjoy.

Cineform becomes VC-5 now, under the wings of SMPTE https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13239/cineform-becomes-vc-5-now-under-the-wings-of-smpte- Sat, 20 Jun 2015 02:51:14 +0000 FrankGlencairn 13239@/talks/discussions SMPTE Standardizes GoPro CineForm Codec as the New Open Standard for Video Acquisition and Post Production

SAN MATEO, CA (June 6, 2014) – GoPro, maker of the Emmy® Award-winning HERO® camera and enabler of some of today’s most engaging professional video content, announced today that the core technology behind the GoPro CineForm Codec has been standardized by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers® (SMPTE®) as the SMPTE ST 2073 VC-5 video compression standard – the new open codec standard for video acquisition and post production.

The GoPro CineForm Codec is a high-performance video codec widely valued in video post-production as the industry’s highest quality compression format. It is well established in the professional filmmaking marketplace and has been extensively used in Hollywood feature films, including Slumdog Millionaire and Need for Speed.

SMPTE standardization of the GoPro CineForm codec as the VC-5 standard now means the professional production and post production community can access SMPTE-standardized codec technology for presenting high resolution imagery with a high speed, low-compute intensive workflow. The new VC-5 standard will provide a more efficient, cost effective and higher-performance workflow, delivering an 8x performance boost over the current JPEG 2000 format with higher resolution.

That's huge - I was hoping for this since quite a while. Looking forward to finally get rid of ProRes. Cineform is so much better.

GoPro, Inc. (NASDAQ:GPRO), enabler of some of today’s most immersive and engaging content, has announced the availability of its new HERO+ LCD camera. Capturing life-like high definition 1080p60 video and 8MP photos, the HERO+ LCD features a convenient touch display for easy shot framing, settings control and access to an all-new in-camera video trimming feature. Like the entry-level HERO, the HERO+ LCD is built directly into its waterproof housing. The simplicity of this all-in-one design now combines with expanded features to make capturing life’s memorable moments easier than ever.

Rugged and waterproof to 131’ (40m), HERO+ LCD also includes advanced features like HiLight Tagging and in-camera video trimming to make it easier to identify and share your favorite moments. HiLight Tagging lets you mark key moments while recording and during playback so you can easily find them later, and the all-new video trimming feature allows you to create short clips in-camera for easier sharing without a computer.

Built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth® connect the HERO+ LCD to your GoPro App-enabled smartphone or tablet for easy camera control and shot preview when your camera is mounted or out of reach. The GoPro App also allows for easy content sharing to Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and more and combines with the new in-camera video trimming feature to form a convenient content sharing solution.

“HERO+ LCD illustrates that even as we push the limits of life capture with bleeding-edge devices like the Hero4 Black, we’re also focused on delivering accessible, high-quality capture solutions to anyone wanting to GoPro,” said Nick Woodman, founder and CEO of GoPro.

Shortly, I'm about to embark on a two up motorcycle journey from Jo'Burg to Swaziland and back. There are two panniers, each 31 litres for all our stuff. I hope to make two off, eight minute episodes about the trip and the places we visit.

I've allowed 10 litres of space, and here's a photo of all the kit, which actually is a bit off because I've realised the chargers are not shown.

Whats here is:

  • 5D3 with recent Magic Lantern, 2 Off 64GB 1000x cards, 1 Off 32GB 1000x card, 1 Off 128GB 1066x card
  • 24-70 f2.8 lens
  • GoPro 4 Black with 4 off 32GB Class 10 cards
  • H4N with 32GB Class 10 card
  • HHG-01 Gimbal
  • AS312 light
  • Rode Lavalier Microphone
  • Gorilla Pod
  • Fishing pole, shorted to 2.7 metres modified with 1/4 inch thread to take a clamp for the gimbal for high shots
  • Billingham 255 bag (just out of view)

I'm feeling that I'm going to be wishing I had the 70-200 Lens. I've made tests using the Gorilla pod as a shoulder rest, more practice needed.

I've been out a couple of times with just that lot in the bag, seems like I'll need to get creative!

Ultra low budget quadcopter for filming with a GoPro? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12413/ultra-low-budget-quadcopter-for-filming-with-a-gopro Wed, 18 Feb 2015 23:25:11 +0000 IronFilm 12413@/talks/discussions What very low budget quadcopter would people recommend that can still carry a GoPro on it?

My purposes is for very low budget productions to add in a little bit of basic aerial shots to include into videos I do at the moment, such as weddings, real estate videos, and the odd corporate shoot (and for the various no budget things I do now and then such as films and music videos).

My short list would be (with the CX20 looking like my favourite):

http://www.banggood.com/Cheerson-CX20-Opensource-Version-AutoPathfinder-Quadcopter-RTF-p-932145.html http://www.banggood.com/WLtoys-V666-5_8G-FPV-6-Axis-RC-Quadcopter-With-HD-Camera-Monitor-RTF-p-944001.html http://www.banggood.com/Flying-3D-X8-6-Axis-2_4G-8CH-GPS-FPV-RC-Quadcopter-RTF-p-934779.html http://www.dx.com/p/walkera-qr-x350-5-ch-one-key-go-home-r-c-quadcopter-w-gps-altitude-hold-system-bnf-white-245208#.VOVf-NgcSuA http://www.dx.com/p/wltoys-v303-2-4g-4-ch-r-c-aircraft-w-gps-automatic-return-camera-suitable-for-gopro-hero3-3-330169#.VOVgCdgcSuA

All can carry a GoPro on them. (though the second one, the cheapest, requires some modding I think, and does stretch the lift capacity to the limits)

FPV + Gimbal for the GoPro would both be "nice to haves" as well.

Though both things that can be purchased later on to add to the quadcopter, and not right now.

Anything else I'm missing or should be considering, please point out! :-)

This was a promo for a series of video production classes at a local public access station, centering on one of the former students who is now an intern working at the station.

90% of the footage was shot on a GH3 with the 14-140mm f4-5.8 lens

Recording mode was MOV 30p All-I

Photo Style was set to Natural 0,0,0,0

10% of the footage was from a GoPro HERO 3 (anything obviously hyper-wide)

Edit and grading were done in FCPX, with heavy use of Neat Video's noise reduction plugin for the interior production truck shots.

Got the chance to take my 10 year old son there for Christmas. It was truly one of the best experiences of my life.

Filmed with my Panasonic GH3, GoPro 3 Black, and Modified Full Spectrum GF1 simultaneously. I shot with the GoPro on the GH3's hot shoe so I would have simultaneous wide angle and tight views. The GF1 was on a tripod and was put in Black and White mode with contrast turned all the way up because of the extra UV/IR light that is let in. It can literally see in the dark.

No color grading was done at all. I simply don't have time for it. This is straight out of the camera video just pieced together with the music.

I think the future of filming is multiple cameras operated by a single person. Maybe just a pipe dream but it is still my dream.

How hard is the 4 minute mile? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7731/how-hard-is-the-4-minute-mile- Fri, 09 Aug 2013 10:08:01 +0000 mpgxsvcd 7731@/talks/discussions Pretty darn hard! One of our Local Elite runners(Sandy Roberts) organized an event where he was going to try to break the 4 minute barrier on a local High School Track. When he first thought this up he wasn’t expecting many people to actually show up to watch.

He really just wanted to challenge himself to do it. He has run really close to the 4 minute barrier indoors but he hadn’t ever broken that magical number in an officially timed event.

My father had always told me about how great the day was when Roger Bannister broke the 4 minute mile barrier. It was thought to be impossible back then(1954) but somehow Bannister proved them all wrong. Check out the video below to see what that race was like.

I was literally obsessed with trying to become an elite runner when I was 9 years old. I trained by myself harder than any 9 year old should ever train. I was running 10Ks flat out nearly every day in hopes that one day I too could reach that magical number.

However, no matter how much I trained I couldn’t beat the kids that had elite coaches and knew how to train properly. I became frustrated with the middle distances and then ran my first half marathon at 13 years old. After that I didn’t run distance again until my first child was born 15 years later.

The 4 minute mile is not what it once was. At least 1000 people have run under that time and Daniel Komen has run sub 8 minutes for two miles twice before. In one of his attempts both of his consecutive miles were sub 4 minutes.

However, the feat is still just as hard as it was before. No woman has ever even come close to breaking the 4 minute barrier. The world record for women still stands at 4:12:56 but the men’s record was an astonishing 3:43.13 and the second place runner was right behind him. Check out this video to see what that race looked like.

When I saw that it was free to come out and watch Sandy make his attempt at this elusive goal I grabbed my GH3 and GoPro 3 Black and headed down to Cardinal Gibbons High School. I wasn’t expecting anyone else to be there but to my surprise there were hundreds of people there already.

The track was abuzz with spectators anxiously awaiting the high school football team to finish practice so the race could start. Half an hour later Sandy and his brother(Pacer till 800 meters) were ready to toe the line.

Then it happened. The entire stadium went dead silent. You couldn’t hear anything. Nothing. Just silence as the brothers hurried to the line. No count down. Just a single gunshot and the two runners were off at a torrid pace with a sea of people surrounding them.

I sat alone in the stands. I wanted the best view of the entire track. I was there to capture the moment. I was there in admiration of a fellow runner that I knew could do what I had only dreamed of.

I will let the video pick up where my story left off. I think it does the event justice. I didn’t shoot any stills of the run because they simply don’t tell the whole story. The noise from the crowd is just overwhelming.

It seemed like it wasn’t just a single runner out there. It seemed more like hundreds of people giving everything they had to will this lone runner around the track. In the end breaking the 4 minute mile wasn’t really the goal.

The goal was to introduce running to as many people as possible. That goal was accomplished.

Please watch the video below and enjoy.

DIY Adaptor for GH2/FZ200 battery to power USB of GoPro 3 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5393/diy-adaptor-for-gh2fz200-battery-to-power-usb-of-gopro-3 Thu, 06 Dec 2012 03:17:05 +0000 trevmar 5393@/talks/discussions The internal battery in my GoPro 3 only powers the camera and LCD for about an hour. I need longer shoots than that, so I built a lightweight (38 gram / 1.3oz) adaptor to allow me to use my spare FZ200 / GH2 batteries to power the camera via its USB power input. A single BLC12 battery runs the GoPro/ Touch-LCD combo at 2.7K-cine protune for about 2 hrs before the internal battery kicks in for another hour. Together the GoPro 3 will now run at 2.7K for 3 hrs, long enough to fill the 64GB SDXC cards I am using :)

I used an LM3485 3Amp switching regulator evaluation board because 1) I had one lying around, and 2) they are nearly 100% efficient, and don't get warm. The battery holder is a tray from a BLC12 charger I bought off Ebay, and the LED voltage display is also off Ebay (it draws a negligible 10ma and allows you to guesstimate how much battery charge is left). Photos of the rig below.

It would be much easier to just have bought an external USB battery pack, but they are heavy and bulky. This way I get double use out of the batteries I already carry around with my rig.

NOVO, modified GoPro with C-mount lenses https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6359/novo-modified-gopro-with-c-mount-lenses Fri, 08 Mar 2013 00:05:12 +0000 jleo 6359@/talks/discussions The Novo, developed and engineered by View Factor Studios in collaboration with Radiant Images, is a re-housed GoPro Hero3 that is even smaller in size and much more flexible and robust for cinematic purposes.

Key new enhancements include a C-mount lens system with back focus adjustment, which allows for extreme macro shooting. In addition, the Novo offers exposure control capabilities that open up a wide-range of artistic possibilities for cinematographers and camera operators. An internal CPU interfaced to the camera permits users to disable the auto exposure feature and then adjust the aperture manually via the lens. This feature gives a cinematographer the control to set a desired exposure and stops.

The lightweight aluminum housing itself is 20% thinner than the GoPro Hero3 and includes three 1/4-20 and two 10-32 mounting points. Also, four buttons on the front (REC, PWR, WiFi & AUX) are assignable to several functions depending on the application. The Aux button turns the auto exposure on/off, but in the near future will also be utilized for other functions, such as digital zoom, a tool to check critical focus.

And the Novo offers these added features while retaining the key functionality and accessories of the GoPro Hero3, such as the LCD touch screen, power backpack and WiFi connectivity for wireless camera control.

The Novo addresses the needs of cinematographers without compromising the power and versatility of the most advanced GoPro ever.

Like the GoPro Hero3: Black Edition, the Novo is capable of capturing cinema-quality video at 2X the resolution and 2X the frame-rate of previous models while delivering 2X better low light performance – 1440p 48fps, 1080p 60 fps and 720p 120 fps video and 12MP photos at a rate of 30 photos per second, plus the ultra-high resolution 2.7KP-30 fps and 4KP-15 fps video modes.

Sunseeker - a GoPro 3 short film https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6096/sunseeker-a-gopro-3-short-film Tue, 12 Feb 2013 04:52:15 +0000 GMC 6096@/talks/discussions On a dark winterday - don't we seek the sun, far above the clouds?

It started out as a little test of my new toy, the GoPro Hero 3. Just wanted to see how good it would hold up. Then I decided to make a little short film, as I really liked what I saw ;-)

Shot entirely on the GoPro Hero 3 in 2.7k 24p and 1080p protunes mode. I find it amazing how far you can push the grade to get a cinematic looking image. This is a 399 USD camera after all! Download the 1080p file and have a look if you like.

GoPro Hero3 Black 3D https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5786/gopro-hero3-black-3d Tue, 15 Jan 2013 11:32:36 +0000 BlueBomberTurbo 5786@/talks/discussions Did some field testing of my GoPro Hero3 Black 3D setup this weekend at drifting. Here's my setup:

Shoulder Rig:

Test video 1:

1080p60, Narrow FOV, Protune, CamRAW WB

Neat Video, Magic Bullet Looks, a little Shadow/Highlight to recover the clouds

Here's a frame without 3D for reference: image

Gotta say, I LOVE the dynamic range on these cameras! Unless you're shooting something really dark, all but the brightest highlights (ie. the sun) can almost always be recovered in post. There doesn't seem to be much of an issue recovering shadows under most conditions, either. Of course, you'll need to use noise reduction on more serious shadow lifting. I find Neat Video invaluable for heavy processing, as it will remove blocking on smooth areas once you start pushing the limits.

Rig Setup:

Pretty simple, actually. For the 3D part, I got a pair of macro sliders, tore off the rubber surface grip for the bottom piece, removed one of the mounts for use as the top piece, used a 1/4-20 hex standoff to link them together, and slid the GoPros inside. The tension holds them in place perfectly, and the gap from no grip lets me perfectly align the cameras in parallel. The only downfall of this one is that things 5ft or closer tend to hurt the 3D effect, since the lenses are spaced around 3" or so apart. If you're focusing on a subject further back, close objects will look quite a bit off. Same with close subjects, things behind him will be off. After about 5ft, though, everything is fine. I'll be making a more sophisticated and lightweight setup soon, which will allow me to invert one of the cameras to get the lenses much closer.

For the shoulder rig, it's just a Cavision shoulder pad with some 15,000mah USB batteries gaffer taped to a flat section of a flash bracket, screwed into one of the holes in the back. I have a Swivi monitor up front with the 3D rig mounted onto it. It's really lightweight, but I definitely need something more in back to balance it better.

As far as battery life, I left the GoPros running for 6hrs straight. I was able to monitor the battery life through the Swivi's meter, and after that time period, even with the Swivi on, I only used about half the battery. So I should hopefully be able to get around 12 hrs max from that setup.

Here's my Red/Blue workflow:

As far as syncing the left and right, I've found that they're usually about 2 frames off. I try to find and event that is easy to spot on both cameras (subject just passing in front/behind something, light turning on, etc.) to do an easy sync. If that doesn't work, Pluraleyes has no problem matching them up.

Once that's done, I color correct and grade, then apply the 3D Glasses effect in AE. Using the Difference mode, I can align the frames and set keyframes, so the focus can follow the subject no matter where he moves. Then set Keframe Interpolation to smooth the transitions. It's tedious, but the effect is worth it.

Finally, I'll set to Balanced Colored Red Blue and adjust the Red/Blue balance to reduce/eliminate ghosting, scale up to get rid of the edges (aligning will throw them off), and export.

And for Side by Side:

A lot of it is the same, though I seem to have issues with the 3D Glasses effect in Stereo Pair leaving lots of empty space around each frame, and you can't scale each side up individually to fill it. To get around that, I set everything up in the 3D Glasses effect, then export the left and right sides individually. This aligns them properly from the start, so I can get around the empty space issue. Then I do correction and grading, and put them into a double-wide frame next to each other (3840x1080) to get the side by side 3D. YouTube doesn't seem to have a problem with this, though I'm not sure if it would be compatible with any place else.

In the end, it's not really much more work, just more time waiting for it to encode, and with the double wide setup, you get true 1080p 3D.

A note about Premiere/After Effects and 5DtoRGB:

Both Adobe programs will crush the highlights and shadows a bit, at least in Protune. Running the video through 5DtoRGB first will prevent this from happening. It'll also create a much higher quality file than converting through Cineform Studio, since it interpolates color, reducing blocking artifacts. Plus, you can reverse the Cinestyle curve while converting if you want. 5DtoRGB also makes the reds look redder, instead of the slight orange cast they seem to have.
