Glidecam Model for GH2 with Light Lenses https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/26716/glidecam-model-for-gh2-with-light-lenses Wed, 16 Feb 2022 23:32:34 +0000 thepalalias 26716@/talks/discussions I’m looking into getting a Glidecam and need some advice regarding choosing the right model in regards to the payload.

I currently have a Zhiyun Crane V2 that I use with my GH2 and it supports a payload of 0.8 to 3.9 lbs. The lightest setup I use on it (GH2+20mm f/1.7 version 1) is around 1.2 lbs while the heavier ones go up to right around 3.9 lbs.

The problem is that I’m recovering from some health problems and an upcoming surgery next week that make walking in the way meant to reduce vertical jitter easier said than done. Thus, I’m looking at a Glidecam in the hopes of getting more of a swaying up and down than the abrupt jerks I have with my motorized gimbal.

The Glidcam HD-1000 has been advertised as handling a payload from 1.5 lbs to 3 lbs. The Glidecam HD-2000 has been advertised as handling 2-6 lbs. The HD-4000 advertises 4-10 lbs. None of these seems (at least on paper) to be able to cover the full range I use.

To make things even more complicated, I am considering combining the Crane V2 and Glidecam in the DIY Trinity knockoff approach that Momentum Productions popularized - which would mean needing a minimum payload of 3.6 lbs supported for the Glidecam.

My question is, has anyone had experience with different Glidecam on a GH2? Can any of them handle a setup as light as the GH2+pancake even though on paper it would be too light? Is using too light a weight or too heavy a weight more of a problem?

The GoPro Hero 10 + the Hohem iSteady Pro 4: Best Stabilization and Quality? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/26511/the-gopro-hero-10-the-hohem-isteady-pro-4-best-stabilization-and-quality Thu, 09 Dec 2021 00:25:36 +0000 markr041 26511@/talks/discussions Used without camera stabilization, the iSteady Pro 4 gimbal does not do a great job of removing jitters, as my night-time video shows (and as seen in other YouTube videos from influencers):

Still better than the Hero 10's stabilization at night (awful, unusable).

But the gimbal in conjunction with the Hero 10's least-cropping stabilization ("Standard"), you get an extraordinary smoothness. So you can produce full-resolution 5K 60P videos that are tripod steady when static and look cinema smooth when moving with the camera, in good light. At least, that is what I discovered.

Here is my test video: static shots followed a by a torture test - 2 minutes continuous walking briskly with the camera on slanted, uneven grass terrains and through leaves and over curbs. Then a sideways, parallel subject following (which I could never do with the camera alone) and finally a follow-subject walk. Shot in 5.3K 60P wide, just like in the night video.

The gimbal is tiny and light, basically you can think of it as a little handle, which I would and do use anyway when shooting handheld with a GoPro. The battery lasts 14 hours, so no worry about that constraint. It is splashproof, so it like the camera can be used in the rain or snow, no constraint there either. It connects (easily) to the GoPro by bluetooth so you start and stop recording with the gimbal button. And, best of all, no balancing, so you will use it. You just hook the camera on (no screw necessary) and go. $79 on Amazon.

Experience with the Zhiyun Evolution Gimbal using the Yi 4K+ https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17621/experience-with-the-zhiyun-evolution-gimbal-using-the-yi-4k- Sun, 27 Aug 2017 21:29:23 +0000 markr041 17621@/talks/discussions The Zhiyun Evolution gimbal is one those gimbals dedicated to action cams with the GoPro form factor. The advantage of a camera-type specific gimbal is that it comes pre-balanced so if you have the appropriate camera there is no frustrating time spent balancing. You just attach the camera (in the same class), turn the gimbal on, and you are ready to shoot. So, the workload is no more time-consuming or more difficult than attaching a camera to a selfie stick or monopod.

The gimbal comes with two batteries and a two-battery charger. The batteries are supposed to last 12+ hours. I did not test that (a waste of my time), but basically this means that even if the actual time is 8 hours and not 12, you can just turn the thing on and leave it on all during your shoot. Again, you can just treat the gimbal like it was a stick. No worrying about power. Leave it on, forget it uses power.

The form factor is like any other 3-axis gimbal, with perhaps a longish handle (to fit those batteries). It has a joystick for pans, tilts, etc. and for selecting one of three modes, just like all modern motorized gimbals. The motors are basically silent (I can't hear them). But...

The way you mount the camera is to push one end of the camera right up against one of the gimbal motors (the tilt). This gives the best balance, and also makes it easy to figure out how to place the camera. However, one of the two internal mics of the Yi 4K+ is on that side! With the mic pushed up against the motor, guess what? - you get motor noise or at least motor vibration noise. You cannot therefore use the internal mics for audio while using the gimbal. Hence, you need to use an external mic. And the Yi 4K+ can take an external mic (mono).

My small and lightweight portable "kit' consists of the Yi 4K+, a Sony ECM-CS3 mic and the gimbal. Why this mic? it is tiny and light and, most importantly, has an alligator clip that lets me attach the mic directly to the brace between two of the motors - on the gimbal. Not the handle, so no handle noise, and as I said, the motors are basically silent, so no motor noise. My kit therefore gives me quiet (and good) audio, better stabilization than any camera or camcorder (BOSS, IBIS, whatever) with no digital degradation, and 4K video at 60 fps. The camera is $339, the gimbal is $178, and the mic is $17. Perfectly stabilized handheld video, allowing camera movement, audio with no noise and 60 fps 4K for below $550.

Why is 60 fps important? Well for normal video, you get smoother motion. But, more importantly, you can slow down the video which really smooths out movement with the camera, and you can still have 4K (at 30p).

Ok, maybe I am just a shil, trying to sell you on this combo. So, really, how good is the 4K video? is the audio really without noise? can the gimbal really give you steady handheld shots? how smooth is the movement?

    See for yourself:

The Youtube version streams at 2160 60p, and if you have the bandwidth, you should choose that setting to view no matter what the resolution of your viewing device (monitor). If you cannot do this smoothly, try 1440 60p. You will see that Youtube compression does NOT ruin the quality (and that a true 4K video looks better at all viewing resolutions). This video has static shots and walking while shooting, and for audio - a saxophone, guitar, fountains, and construction noise.

I don't know if the Vimeo version streams at 4K 60p (it certainly streams at 4K), but you can download the original 173 Mbps UHD 60p original (as I made it).

How does walking with the camera look slowed down? This video was rendered at 4K 30P, but contains slowed down portion so you can see the effect:

In these shoots I did not once expereince any gimbal glitches (sudden spontaneous gimbal movements). Oh, and there is a bluetooth remote for the Yi 4K+, so you can start and stop the video without touching the camera. It works fine.

Nebula Remote, making videos in your grasp https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15120/nebula-remote-making-videos-in-your-grasp Wed, 25 May 2016 00:08:07 +0000 Avril_Lovin 15120@/talks/discussions Nowadays, making video has been more and more popular in our life. As many documentary and short films show, not only the producer but also the audience require a higher quality of filmmaking. We notice that some of the large radial and complicated tracks are too cumbersome to address the needs of shooting. Emerge as the new trend: compact, lightweight and easy to use, stabilizers are brought.

Handheld 3-axis stabilizer is a revolutionary product to the film industry. It is so light-weighted and user-friendly to create more possibilities for photographers during filmmaking and at mean time providing smooth videos. However, designs of 3-axis stabilizer cannot address the very crucial part: the bounces caused by photographers’ step while making videos. To solve this problem, the cutting-edge Nebula 4200 5-axis stabilizer has arrived.

With two spring arms, Nebula 4200 can absorb any vibrations and bounces under payload acting on the vertical axis and with different spring tension, the two spring arms are also able to filter part of the vibrations on horizontal axis. They are just like the vehicle suspension system which isolates road noise, bumps, and vibrations. Nebula 4200 as the terminator of stabilizer presents you a most smooth experience under the severe environment of recording.

And here comes a brilliant accessory for Nebula 4200 to make it the most powerful combination: our new product, Nebula Remote. No more complicated operation to control both your gimbal and camera with Nebula Remote. It can be quickly installed on gimbal's handle without tools and can be simply used by thumb to control your gimbal accurately and intuitively. Only one key to stop or continue motor's working, convenient for balancing, fine-tuning and power saving. OLED screen clearly shows the current status, including modes of gimbal, current voltage, battery power, angle of pitch axis and yaw axis and other information. By using the memory function, now it’s free to capture shots that are difficult or impossible. Every design makes filmmaking smoother and easier.

Nebula Remote is compatible with Nebula 4200/4100/4000/5200/6000. The video below is Nebula REMOTE function introduction.

The video below is the method of Nebula REMOTE.

Hope these can help you to understand the product.

Nebula Gyro Jib with Nebula 4200 Lite and Nebula REMOTE for new shooting plan https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15923/nebula-gyro-jib-with-nebula-4200-lite-and-nebula-remote-for-new-shooting-plan Sat, 22 Oct 2016 22:35:52 +0000 Avril_Lovin 15923@/talks/discussions Filmpower has expanded the Nebula series in IBC 2016. This time, we introduced Nebula Gyro Jib, different form other Jib, is exactly a perfect match of Nebula 4200 and Nebula 5300. It just like a brand new “handle”, through the dove-tail slot, gimbal can be mounted on it. Now you may switch Nebula 4200 over the spring arm, the 3 axis handle, the single handle or the jib.

Because the camera is still on the stabilizer, that means Nebula Gyro Jib can carry cameras like the Canon XC15 and Panasonic PX230 which is compatible with Nebula 5300. With the help of Gimbal’s lock mode, making the camera stays locked on to a given target as the jib is moved. Also, if you switch to the semi-lock mode, it allows the camera to follow jib’s movement on the horizontal direction but stay locked as the jib moving up or down.

Further more, the Nebula Remote can be added as the controller unit to remote control gimbal’s Pitch and Yaw axis and mode switching, so that the direction of camera can be easily changed. Users may also remote control camera to start/stop recording by using the Remote. This system breaks the angle limit of traditional jibs.

Of course there are some features similar to other travel jibs such as easy to assemble, easy to monitor and easy for transportation. Nebula Gyro Jib is made of carbon fiber, making it only weights 1.4kg while having a reasonable length of 2.4m when fully extended. There are standard 1/4 and 3/8 screw holes on the jib for monitor and tripod. It can use regular weights or a handy donut shaped counter weight water bag as the standard fitting.

I am in particular looking for anyone's experience with the single-handle versions, comparison with Beholders, anything, really. If you think single-handed gimbals suck, I would love to hear that. And if you think the only way to shoot on a gimbal is to buy/rent a Red and plop it on a Movi, I'd like to hear that, too.

Sorry if this should go under another thread, the last gimbal threads I saw seemed to focus on suggestions for gimbals for a particular camera. I am actually looking to see if people would recommend the gimbals at all, as it seems for better or worse all small-form mirrorless/dslrs/point-and shoots, etc. seem to be in the same approximate form factor and weight range (minus lenses). I trust the opinions of people on PV, so I like seeing reviews that people do - I think there was talk of a PV Review section coming at some point? Do I have that right?

Five axis gimbal-The terminator of Steadicam https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15215/five-axis-gimbal-the-terminator-of-steadicam Tue, 14 Jun 2016 02:09:40 +0000 Avril_Lovin 15215@/talks/discussions In the early 1970s, a commercial director and also producer named Garrett Brown began to explore a new system to avoid the jitter while shooting videos. He intended to create a high portable device not only separating the camera from photographers but improving the balance of the camera to reduce vibrations and shaking as well.

This goal was achieved in 1973, by inventing the simple but innovative machine – Brown stabilizer (later renamed: Steadicam).

At that time, Steadicam attracted a large number of users for its low cost and simple structure.

Buy as the rapid developing of science and technology, emerged the shortcoming of Steadicam.

Although Steadicam has made great differences, there are many restrictions to the detriment of current photography needs. Such as Steadicam is too big to be used for narrow scene, and too heavy for long shot. And the fatal weakness is the difficulties for beginners to start in a short time trial, users must take a long time of training to familiar with Steadicam and use it well. With wrong posture, it is counter-productive to keep stable. Still, usually we need to spend a long time on Steadicam for adjustment and balancing.

Now, the cutting-edge Nebula 4200 5-axis stabilizer has arrived to end the 50-year history of Steadicam. You have to admit that the lightweight and compact stabilizer more suits our needs for its user-friendly and excellent stability.

However, designs of 3-axis stabilizer cannot address the very crucial part: the bounces caused by photographers’ step while making videos. To solve this problem, Nebula 4200 5-axis greatly integrated the traditional advantages of Steadicam and the latest technologies of gyroscope stabilizer.

    image

Turned the standard notion of 50-year Steadicam’s structure, 5-axis spring arm is Nebula’s original design, inspired by the damping system of F1 racing cars. Nebula 4200 is known as the only mould-casting gyroscope stabilizer in the world. All parts of this innovative product are made of metal.

The effect of double spring arm in contraposition is both rebound and absorbing. But the mass of stabilizer and camera appropriately maintains inertial. Except the intentional tremor, the two spring arms of 4200 can absorb any vibrations and bounces under payload acting on the vertical axis. With this kind of buffer, Nebula 4200 reduces vibration, retards speed, makes shooting more smooth even facing hard bumps.

    image

They are just like the vehicle suspension system, on the one hand isolates road noise, bumps, and vibrations, on the other hand provides enough sustenance for stabilizing car body while making a turn. Besides vertical axis, with different spring tension, the two spring arms are also able to filter part of the vibrations on horizontal axis. That’s why we call as 5-axis.

Two dovetails are added on spring arm, to show the flexibility of combinations. The standard 1/4 screw hole also makes it easy to carry most of the photography accessories. Every detail we designed is for filmmakers in search of 2 “P”s: professional and possibilities.

Double spring arm in contraposition turns the standard notion of spring arms in line, in order to spread bounces caused by photographers’ step while moving over two handles. Thus perfectly reduces the jitter and jerking and improves users’ manipulation of stabilizers.
