Panasonic GH1 - Film Mode Settings https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/73/panasonic-gh1-film-mode-settings Tue, 10 May 2011 15:01:43 +0000 flibnarb 73@/talks/discussions
Anyway, I was hoping to get some information on the "best" "Film Mode" settings (Panasonic terminology) also known as "Picture Style" (Canon terminology) for un-hacked AND hacked GH1 to later achieve the most accurate "Filmic" look. In my research on Google I've not found a very straight forward answer for the GH1. There is much talk on the Canon side of things to achieve this, particularly by using Marvels picture style or something of the like. So I was hoping to get some input on some experts in the forum related to the GH1 Film Mode to achieve this.

As I understand it, one wants to use settings that will achieve the most flat picture as possible along with settings to achieve proper exposure and such based on environment so that there is more dynamic range for the color grading process, is this correct? Now I know that to achieve an overall filmic look recording needs to take place at 24p and 1/48th of a sec or close to it (1/50th for GH1), I'm just looking for comment on the Film Mode/Picture Style.

As most, I'm hoping to have as much control in post of colors and latitude as possible to achieve the film look, and I realize this process begins in camera. Thanks in advance for any input.]]>

Nikon D5100 compared to Panasonic GH2 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1195/nikon-d5100-compared-to-panasonic-gh2 Sun, 16 Oct 2011 02:30:09 +0000 LPowell 1195@/talks/discussions
* A swiveling, side-hinged LCD screen with 920K pixels
* 1080p & 720p video at 24, 25, and 30fps, H.264 format

While the semi-pro D7000 provides numerous refinements for still photography, it lacks the D5100's 1080p25 and 1080p30 video modes, as well as its swiveling LCD screen. These omissions make the D7000 less well-adapted to DSLR video purposes than the D5100. However, the D5100 has its own shortcomings:

* Auto-focus works only with AF-S G-style lenses.
* Aperture can only be set in-camera, not by lens aperture ring.
* Manual exposure settings do not work for video recording.
* White balance cannot be manually set in Kelvin degrees.

Compared with the GH2, both D5100 and D7000 cameras lack several key features:

* No histogram display during video recording.
* No visible exposure meter in Live View mode.
* No 50/60fps video modes for slow motion.
* Each video recording is limited to 20 minutes.
* Firmware has not yet been hacked!

In most other respects, the D5100 works similarly to the GH2, and its 20Mbps, B-frame-enabled H.264 encoder produces image quality comparable to an unhacked GH2. On the surface, the D5100 would appear to be a high-quality, semi-automated DSLR that doesn't quite measure up to the GH2's video capabilities. In several respects, however, it surpasses the GH2's weak spots:

* Highest dynamic range of current crop-sensor DSLRs
* Lowest high-ISO noise of current crop-sensor DSLRs
* Imperceptible banding from 14-bit RAW image sensor

DxOMark test comparisons here:
http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/Cameras/Compare-Camera-Sensors/Compare-cameras-side-by-side/%28appareil1%29/698|0/%28brand%29/Nikon/%28appareil2%29/677|0/%28brand2%29/Panasonic/%28appareil3%29/630|0/%28brand3%29/Panasonic

One more notable feature: The D5100's Nikon AF-D lenses can be shared with the GH2.

It was this lens compatibility factor that led me to consider the D5100's merits as a backup video camera. For mobile filming purposes, I had built a pair of shoulder mount rigs with traditional follow focus and matte box. I quickly realized that Micro 4/3 and Canon FD still photography lenses are poorly suited for this purpose, and that for proper focus ring rotation with a follow focus, I needed to use Nikon F-mount lenses. I chose the following set of moderately-priced lenses, all of which have manual focus rings with hard stops and fixed outer lens barrels that neither extend nor rotate:

Rokinon/Samyang 35mm f1.4
Rokinon/Samyang 85mm f1.4
Tokina AT-X 235 Pro 20-35mm f2.8
Tokina AT-X 270 Pro 28-70mm f2.8

These lenses work beautifully with the GH2 in all but two situations - low-light video shooting and portrait photography. For that, I needed a camera with less noise at high ISO's and finer color depth than the GH2's 12-bit RAW image sensor. Hence, the Nikon D5100.

After using the D5100 along with my GH2 and GH1 for a while, I came to some general conclusions about their ISO settings. With video footage, I'm quite intolerant of high-ISO noise, and have placed strict limits on each camera's maximum usable ISO:

GH1: ISO 400 or less, 800 when desperate
GH2: ISO 800 or less, 1600 when desperate
D5100: ISO 1600 or less, 3200 when desperate

Recently I ran controlled high-ISO tests at 1080p24 on all three cameras mounted on a tripod. I used the same lens, the Tokina AT-X Pro 28-70mm f2.8, set at f11. To produce the same field of view on all three, I set the lens to about 50mm on GH1 and GH2, and to about 65mm on the D5100. On the GH1, I installed the 100Mbps Max Latitude Native 24p patch. On the GH2, I installed cbrandin's 66Mbps AQ2 patch. I used the light meter (set to sunlight) in each camera to set exposure at ISO 1600. This produced videos that were reasonably close in exposure levels. More significant variations were visible in the three camera's color balances, which I adjusted to match more closely in each camera (the GH1 really needs its green toned down to match the GH2). I then imported each video file into Premiere CS55.5 and combined them into the following video, with GH1, GH2, and D5100 clips in order:

I also exported a still frame from each clip, which I center-cropped at 100% resolution:

Looking for GH2 1080i50 low quality patch for live use https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14065/looking-for-gh2-1080i50-low-quality-patch-for-live-use Sat, 14 Nov 2015 05:08:48 +0000 FW200 14065@/talks/discussions I have a live event coming up which I need to do in 1080i50, so I want to use the GH2 as a wide shot with a HDMI to SDI converter into a switcher. The recordings on the camera won't be used, but offcourse the HDMI out has to be clean which is only possible when recording. When using a 32GB card and the minimum standard GH2 bitrate of 13 I could go for 5 hours, but the event is about 8 hours.

An alternative option is to clear the camera and restart recording but I was wondering if there was a lower quality patch I can use to stretch the recording. As I understood it the quality of the HDMI output and encoders are not linked, so the recording can look horrible as long as the HDMI out is clean.

WorkHorse https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11079/workhorse Wed, 20 Aug 2014 05:27:17 +0000 apefos 11079@/talks/discussions WorkHorse patch for GH2 hack, the result of developing after my three previous threads here in the Top Settings (check last posts to download the final versions):

This is the best thing I loaded to my GH2. Stable, reliable and excelent image quality in all modes, works for cards with 24/30/36/45MBps constant write speed or above depending on the version loaded. Best option is to use 45MBps cards and above, which I used for the tests.

setg is the recomended version, safe and great quality. seth and seti are for lower speed cards, but does not have same quality of setg. setj has more aggressive settings for even better quality.

four versions: (use setg if you have proper card, it is safe and avoids all mosquito noise and texture mud in the high bitrate modes)

setg: for cards with constant write speed 36MBps and above, I frames compression = 3

seth: for cards with constant write speed 24MBps and above, I frames compression = 4

seti: for cards with constant write speed 30MBps and above, I frames compression = 3.5

setj: for cards with constant write speed 45MBps and above, I frames compression = 2.5

The base is FlowMotion 2.02 from LPowell because he did a great careful job to tweak the quantization, matrices and tables and get perfect image quality in all modes with quiet camera or camera movements.

The modifications are in datarate and gop to make it completely stable and reliable without stop recording in all modes. For best image quality use the 24H, SH, FSH and HBR. The 24L, H, FH does not have the same quality and are for save memory space and for you to try in lower speed cards if needed.

The bitrate is very well distributed among the I, B and P frames giving a fluid random texture and noise in all modes and isos, The gops and datarate are well balanced to each other with the benefits from the quantization, matrices and tables from FM202.

In the setg 24H, SH, FSH and HBR, the texture is beautiful, noise is homogene, no macroblocking, no mosquito noise, no texture mud. Great use of the 8 bit codec in dark areas, excelent high iso performance which cleans ok with neatvideo and with a small amount of film grain you cannot tell it was shoot in high iso. Optimal results for blu-ray output and big screen projection.

720p 60p upscaled to 1080p works great for slow motion, just use your skill to denoise, sharp and upscale it. Apply film grain to your taste. If you like the feel of the original noise, just keep it, or just remove a little bit of chroma noise keeping the luma noise, and no need film grain.

No stop recording in all tests with setg. tested with green grass under sun and shadow and also tested in all modes with the four Stray's colour death charts. Tests done with 6400 iso which is very difficult to the hack to handle and it worked ok. Tests also done in the end of card space (3 minutes left) and no stop recording also. Sandisk 32GB SDHC 45MBps was used.

The audio has Pasadena settings, from FM202.

Spanning was not tested with this patch. Also it needs transcoding with 5DtoRGB free software before editing to avoid the diagonal pattern (rain). It is clean after converted to Apple ProRes. I Converted to the LT version with great results and smaller fle sizes.

If somebody wants to test spanning I recomend to use the lower bitrate modes and tweak the TOP and BOTTOM datarate limits in the advanced settings for testers in PTool.

Enjoy!
