I started filming with camcorders because way-back-when that was all there was. When we moved to 4K, we had the Lumix cameras, but also the Sony ax100 and the even-better ax700. Both these camcorders has some of the best lenses and sharpest 4K images I have seen in an affordable, compact body that could record unlimited video and be fitted with a monster battery. The mega zoom on these Sony camcorders is astoundingly good.
I don't see any real updates to this line, in fact I don't see any 8K prosumer camcorders on the horizon.
This is a shame because just the zoom rocker alone on such a great lens is incredibly useful for the work we do.
Is this the end of the camcorder?

JVC 4K cameras, including GY-LS300 - 4K for $2995, GY-HM200 and GY-HM170 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11756/jvc-4k-cameras-including-gy-ls300-4k-for-2995-gy-hm200-and-gy-hm170 Thu, 13 Nov 2014 20:31:07 +0000 bozfx 11756@/talks/discussions image

Press release:

JVC launches 4KCAM product line

London, 12th November 2014 – JVC Professional has today launched its new 4KCAM product line, comprising three new handheld camcorders and a camera system. The GY-HM200 is a versatile, full-featured 4K Ultra HD camcorder with HD streaming and the compact GY-HM170 delivers 4K Ultra HD images in an economical, palm-sized camera with professional features. The GY-LS300 handheld 4K camera and GW-SP100 camera system – previewed at the recent IBC2014 show – each offer 2K/4K recording; the GY-LS300 is a Super 35mm 2K/4K camcorder that accepts a variety of interchangeable lenses, while the GW-SP100 is a 2K/4K mini camera system featuring remote head and recorder.

When JVC launched its ProHD product line, JVC made professional HD production affordable. The new 4KCAM product line follows that same tradition, with new cameras that make ultra-high definition 4K economical for cinematographers, webcasters and broadcasters, corporate and live event production teams and independent filmmakers.

GY-LS300 Super 35mm camcorder

The GY-LS300 records to non-proprietary SDHC and SDXC media cards in a variety of image formats including 4K Ultra HD, full HD with 4:2:2 sampling, SD and web-friendly proxy formats. It features JVC's 4K Super 35mm CMOS sensor combined with industry standard Micro Four Thirds (MFT) lens mount. JVC’s unique Variable Scan Mapping technology maintains the native angle of view for a variety of lenses, including Super 35, MFT and Super 16. As a result, lens options for the camera are almost limitless.

“The combination of a Super 35 sensor and MFT mount is a brilliant solution to accommodate the largest variety of lenses and adapters without compromising image quality and lens characteristics,” said Gustav Emrich, European product manager. “It gives filmmakers the flexibility to use high-end cinema lenses or affordable glass to capture 4K/HD footage.”

In summary

The 4KCAM product line is an ideal complement to JVC’s successful ProHD product line. All the new cameras feature dual SDHC/SDXC card slots for dual, backup and continuous recording. The camcorders also include a 3.5-inch LCD display and 1.56 megapixel colour viewfinder, each with smart focus assist functions, and offer two-channel audio recording. An ideal complement to JVC’s successful ProHD product line, the new 4KCAM cameras will be available by Spring 2015, with European pricing still to be confirmed.

Sony HXR-NX5R camcorder https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15575/sony-hxr-nx5r-camcorder Wed, 24 Aug 2016 02:35:21 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 15575@/talks/discussions

Sony is expanding its NXCAM line of professional HD camcorders with the new HXR-NX5R professional compact camcorder, delivering a range of enhancements over its predecessor models. The new camcorder offers upgraded network functions and a choice of advanced XAVC-S 50Mbps or established AVCHD/DV recording formats to help users meet diverse workflows and client requirements.

The addition of a 3G-SDI terminal supports Full HD 60p output, and the HXR-NX5R features easy-to-use direct functions and a responsive joystick, making it easier to access key camera functions without entering the menu, combined with a wide viewing angle and high contrast OLED viewfinder for image monitoring.

“The HXR-NX5R’s flexible operations, file transfer options and easy-to-use features are designed for professionals who need to quickly and easily shoot, edit and deliver high-quality content,” said Sebastian Scala, Pro Video Marketing Manager for Sony’s Professional Solutions Americas group. “It’s ideal for corporate or event/wedding production, newsgathering, documentaries, online content creation, nature, sports and more.”

Users can take advantage of the camcorder’s advanced network functions, such as built-in Wi-Fi and FTP wireless connections. Compatibility with Sony’s Multi-Interface (MI) Shoe avoids cabling with easy integration between the HXR-NX5R and Sony’s UWP-D series wireless microphones without need for cables.

The HXR-NX5R also includes the industry’s first adjustable brightness LED video light to minimize the need for external lighting equipment. The camcorder’s advanced digital signal processor (DSP) delivers advanced noise reduction and sharp detail reproduction.

Simultaneous backup recording through dual SD card slots adds increased reliability and adaptability in challenging live event environments.

The camcorder’s three 1/2.8-type Full HD Exmor CMOS sensors produces high-quality color imagery and high sensitivity, and 40x Clear Image Zoom function to double the optical zoom without losing image quality.

Complementing the HXR-NX5R is a new compact multi-function remote commander – model RM-30BP. Ideal for freelancers and small-budget productions, the lightweight remote can be handheld, placed on a table or attached to a tripod arm for operation. The RM-30BP can control most camera functions including:

  • Lens control: one push auto / manual focus, iris and zoom control
  • Camera control: recording / display functions, shutter speed, white balance – including six assignable buttons
  • Playback and multi camera control (up to 3 cameras)

The new remote can connect to the new MCX-500 for multi camera control directly from the switcher, and is compatible with the new HXR-NX5R and PXW-FS7 v4.0, with plans to introduce compatibility for other Sony camcorders.

The new MCX-500 is an all-in-one switcher system ideal for live events or corporate productions, and designed to work alongside the NX5R and the RM-30BP for multi-camera operation. The MCX-500 sends PGM/PVW tally signals to each HXR-NX5R. This feature allows operators to know which camera is selected for live, allowing content creators to handle projects that previously would have required more assistants or a larger team.

The following is planned availability for the new products:

  • HXR-NX5R – September 2016
  • RM-30BP – October 2016
  • MCX-500 – January 2017

Best 264 or 265 Camera for under $5K https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/18042/best-264-or-265-camera-for-under-5k Sat, 21 Oct 2017 11:08:58 +0000 DrDave 18042@/talks/discussions There's a lot of cams out there--what do ppl think is the best one for under $5K? The catch? Must be able to record either h.264 and/or h.265 (including all variants like Sony). Raw and so on is a plus, and would be nice to have in addition to a compressed format, but for long events it's a deal breaker.

Panasonic HC-V700 Camcorder Review https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7309/panasonic-hc-v700-camcorder-review Fri, 21 Jun 2013 00:37:27 +0000 QuinEtiam 7309@/talks/discussions I bought the Panasonic HC-v700 Camcorder based on this review:

http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/panasonic-hc-v700-camcorder-review/conclusion

For me the 1080/60p and the telemacro mode are the two best things about this camcorder.

I shoot for Microstock and Vimeo, I can't tell you a codex from a follow-focus. I point/shoot and hope it looks good.

The 1080/60i mode has weird interlaced kinda lines, not sure if it's my workflow or what.

I've owned the GH1, Sony A55, Nikon P500 and Gopro Hero2 and this Camcorder produces a better image.

Here's a Time Lapse I shot, just sped-up to 800% in Motion5.

Grizzly shot a full zoom, slowed from 60p to 30p.

Telemacro shot.

another one

60i shot

There's a 180 photo burst mode that is kinda neat...

I have shaky hands but I think someone could make the zoom work smoothly

Apparently the updated Panasonic HC-v720 model is slightly better. http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-best-camcorder-is-the-panasonic-hc-v720/

For $460 it's a pretty good Camcorder. I think.

The camcorder is 15 months old and still within its 3 year warranty. The camera is in perfect condition, no scratches or damage whatsoever. Fully functional and has been a perfect performer for quite a few jobs now. Original box and all cables / manuals

Individual Items as follows :- (subject to additional shipping costs)

  • AC160 = £2300

All items are based in Peterhead, Scotland, UK and will ship to most countries

If you are interested in any or all of these items then please PM me. Please note PAYPAL will be required for transaction and items can only be sent once payment has been received.

The reason i am selling these items is that we wish to downsize our operations into micro four thirds format for all our cameras and the sale of the AC160 is to generate enough money to purchase another GH3 with lenses.

If you are wanting an excellent performing camcorder for ENG work that is capable of producing stunning images then this should be a serious consideration to save some money.

Thanks,

Can the GH3 replace a Traditional Video camera for Amateur work? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6331/can-the-gh3-replace-a-traditional-video-camera-for-amateur-work Tue, 05 Mar 2013 11:16:18 +0000 mpgxsvcd 6331@/talks/discussions I have been shooting indoor climbing competitions for years with Micro Four Thirds cameras(GF1, GH2, and now the GH3). I don’t shoot professionally. I simply record the event and share the videos with anyone who wants to see them.

I thought the videos were good in the past. However, the lack of image stabilization, accurate Continuous Auto Focus, and a good wide aperture zoom lens were always mentioned as limitations with my videos.

Finally with the GH3 I think we are over that hurdle. The video below was shot entirely hand held(No tripod or monopod at all) by 1 person in continuous Auto Focus mode with the 35-100mm F2.8 lens. I also only used one battery and still had some juice left after more than 4 hours of filming.

I would say that the focus was spot on for pretty much every clip. Even the focus pull at the beginning from the guy’s Ipad to his son climbing worked perfectly. That was a one take shot. If I didn’t get it right I couldn’t ask the guy and the climber to go back and do it again.

I simply slid my finger from the Ipad to the climber on the camera’s LCD screen. I think it gave the video a very nice effect.

I had other lenses with me like the 25mm F1.4 and the 14mm F2.5. However, I never felt like I needed them. At F2.8 I was almost never above ISO 3200 even with the darker lighting they used for this round.

I think the IS was terrific in the 35-100mm lens as well. Yes I would rather have had the OMD’s 5 axis stabilization. However, I think this is the next best thing. Try holding a camera up for 4 hours straight with a 200mm 35mm equivalent focal length and see how shaky it is without good IS. I also like to take images while I record video and instantly upload them to the web so that spectators can follow along with the action with real-time pictures. With the GH3 I put it in the real time wireless upload mode and shot at 1080p @ 60 FPS in the stills mode. That way I could take stills during video and instantly upload them.

The only issue I had with that is that every time you press the shutter button to take a still it will initiate a focus adjustment. That actually made the focus go off more times than not. After noticing this I just decided to save images directly from the videos in playback mode(Press pause during video playback and then save an image). The camera will upload those images in real time as well.

I have tested the quality of images recorded during video recording and images saved during playback and they are indistinguishable in my opinion.

I also mount my GoPro 3 Black on top of the GH3 and shoot simultaneous wide angle 720p @ 120 FPS video. However, I scrapped all of the GoPro footage because it simply was not up to the caliber of the GH3 video. It is great for super slow motion but the 120 FPS mode indoors produces so much noise that it would not mesh well with the excellent video from the GH3.

I also was impressed with how well the youtube encoding turned out. I normally post to Vimeo as well because it is better for compression. However, in this case I thought the 1080p youtube encode looked great.

I didn’t alter the video at all. I did not do any color grading or post processing on it. I shot in scenery mode with -2 Contrast, +2 sharpness, Zero Color, and -5 Noise Reduction and simply pieced the videos together with a cheap($50) program called AVS Video Editor.

It was really nice to be able to produce the video with the footage as it was shot in camera and still get what I thought was a decent result.

There were plenty of other professional film crews there with much more sophisticated equipment. The little 11 year old girl in the last clip is probably the 2nd best female climber in the country(At 12 years old) and she has a film crew that follows her around everywhere she goes. I wonder how much better their footage looks?

So what do you think? Is the GH3 finally the camera that would make you put down the traditional video camera if you shoot both stills and video?

I have an old vixia hg20 i would love to get more use out of. I'm not familiar at all with the Gh2 hacking, but I do know they both use avchd. Does anyone more knowledgeable than me care to contribute their thoughts?

VizTools reveals HandiZoom: Convert Canon DSLRs in a camcorder https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2852/viztools-reveals-handizoom-convert-canon-dslrs-in-a-camcorder Fri, 13 Apr 2012 09:49:25 +0000 Manu4Vendetta 2852@/talks/discussions But only for Canon. :(

Wanna shoot really serious video of the sidewalk on your DSLR, but can't get along with those dicey standard controls? Then maybe VizTools has a solution -- or at least a working prototype it's readying for NAB. The HandiZoom can be operated with only one hand and does motorized zoom with adjustable speed settings, as well as various other primary controls. It hooks up to compatible Canon DSLRs using USB and a rail system, with the aim of making the camera feel more like a traditional news shooter. Check out the video after the break, and then maybe throw down a few more pennies to pair it with one of these.
