Actually I put 170M bitrate and the small shootings I made really passed through with no errors! Since I am still learning about those settings, I would like to ask someone to analyze the data and see if I really got it. Annexed goes my patch.

I based my settings over Driftwood cluster v6 settings.

Gh2 noob easy hack https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16530/gh2-noob-easy-hack Thu, 02 Mar 2017 05:08:16 +0000 Erlucios 16530@/talks/discussions Hi, I've just bought a gh2 at low price with a 14-42 only for video purpose. I need a simple hack that remove the time limit and that is reliable. I'm not searching for high bitrate, I like to use 1080 50p and 50mb because I send videos to local tv. Can someone suggest me a hack with this features? Or can someone suggest me how to hack the original firmware by Panasonic? I'm able to use ptool.

Differences between original video and Youtube/Vimeo video https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15810/differences-between-original-video-and-youtubevimeo-video Wed, 28 Sep 2016 15:33:26 +0000 Brian_Siano 15810@/talks/discussions A lawyer friend of mine asked me an interesting question. She wanted to know if there was a way of determining whether a video acquired from an online source (say, YouTube or Vimeo) was the original video, i.e., what the camera shot.

I said that services like YouTube and Vimeo usually re-compress the video for Internet playback, so if one captured the playback, it'd definitely be different. But, some services allow people to download the original uploaded video.

So, I'd like to ask everyone: Is there some characteristic (like bitrate) that we can check to see if the video is the "camera original" or if it's been processed by something else?

A Few Questions About: Hacked Bitrates, Auto ISO, EV, Modes https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9493/a-few-questions-about-hacked-bitrates-auto-iso-ev-modes Wed, 29 Jan 2014 22:14:07 +0000 Heatshiver 9493@/talks/discussions I bought a GH2 mostly for the hacked patches. I have spent hours researching to try to learn what to do and how to use the camera for video purposes. I am hoping that someone can help answer a few questions as most of my information tends to originate from this site:

Setup - In order to achieve the higher bitrates I had to use M from the dial atop the GH2. The camera icon with the M would not allow this. The tradeoff was Auto ISO with M, and adjustable ISO with the camera icon with the M. I use mostly Canon FD lenses.

1a) Bitrates - I have tried a few hacks with varying success. The best I have got is about 100MB with Flow Motion v2.02, however, most of the shots I got with this hack seem to be from 70MB-90MB. I tried Flow Motion, Driftwood's Moon T7, and two Driftwood hacks (176MB & 220MB) from a pack made by the user Sohus on this forum.

Is it common to be well below the stated bitrate amounts?

1b) AVCHD vs MJPEG - I never seemed to get very high bitrates when using 1080i, despite the hacks stating to be much higher. They would range from 15MB-40MB. To achieve higher bitrates with Flow Motion, I used MJPEG which boosted them much higher.

Shouldn't I be achieving high bitrates with AVCHD?

2) Auto ISO - Whenever I use M (from PASM) the ISO would always be set to Auto ISO. I could adjust the ISO when using the camera icon mode (with the M), but then the bitrates would suffer. I tried changing the ISO before shooting, but Auto ISO would kick in no matter what.

How do I change the ISO while in M mode?

3) EV - I know that EV depends upon shutter, aperture, and ISO, but I can see the EV when I push the Display button so I was hoping there was still a way to change it.

Am I correct to assume that because I am using Canon FD lenses I cannot use EV? Even if using a Panasonic lens, how do I change the EV (I tried, but failed).

4) Modes - I have only been able to use the hacked bitrates - and only to a certain degree - by using M with MJPEG.

What modes should I be using to use the hacked patches? The camera icon with M? High Bitrate? 24P? 1080i?

Sorry for all the questions. I am not unhappy with the camera, but I really want to know why the bitrates are not working? And moreso, why the Auto ISO can't be changed (as I don't like the amount of noise it can introduce)? Thank you!

GH2 AVCHD spanning https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1047/gh2-avchd-spanning- Wed, 28 Sep 2011 07:01:41 +0000 sohus 1047@/talks/discussions
What we know:

@KAE's 65M settings spanned (PTool 3.61)

After the release of PTool 3.62, spanning became more of an issue (at least it appeared to). Does this have something to do with the AQ settings that were opened up?

With PTool 3.62D, I have confirmed the following settings to be spanning:
@CBrandin 44M/32M at 24L setting (32M) --> GOP12, 32M, AQ4 (44M setting is not spanning)
Stock settings

Let me know if you know other settings with good quality and reliability that do span.

These two examples are extremes in terms of bitrate so I am pretty sure the bitrate alone is not the sole cause.

Driftwood's setting has no AQ set and the iFrames are smaller than most other settings (around 6MB instead of 8 - 11 MB) for most other settings. It also has no P & B frames (does the codec still need to work as hard?). Furthermore, it is GOP1 instead of GOP 3/6/12/ It would be nice if we could pin down what affects spanning: bitrate, AQ settings, GOP settings, memory card speed, scene detail (extreme: death chart). What makes that KAE's setting spanned with 3.61 but @CBrandin's 66M setting does not span? Is there someone who has an idea about this?

Ideally, I hope we can create a setting (ideally a 24L setting ) that spans at a decent bitrate (say 44M - 66M - 88M).

Looking forward to your thoughts and experiences on this matter. ]]>

GH3 Data rate and colour management compression https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9174/gh3-data-rate-and-colour-management-compression Mon, 23 Dec 2013 06:05:35 +0000 Wotsisname 9174@/talks/discussions Hi all,

I am confused about the 50mbps / 72mbps date rate that the GH3 supposedly records at.

My footage, recorded as H264 MOV files in either of these high bit rates, is listed in FCP as between 5.8mbps and 8.5mbps. Analysing the footage with cinema tools reveals the same data rate - not the 50 / 72 it should be.

If I convert the files to ProRes I get the higher data rates - around 30 - 60mbps. Although this is closer, and sometimes in excess of the data rate I want, am I not merely up-resing the footage? The new date rate might be higher, but if it is not what the camera recorded, the information isn't t there.

I am also confused about the colour management. My h264 footage has a colour profile of 1-1-1. Is that the best I can get? I read somewhere that the GH3 will record 2-4-1. How do I set that?

Again up-resing to prores 422 or 444 will not introduce colours that are not recorded in the first place!

I look forward to hearing people's thoughts.

Hello everybody, I got a very strange problem with a hacked GH1. After several experiments with all kind of settings now it seems that I cannot stop the camera creating bitrates over 100 Mbit/s anymore, doesn't matter how I change the settings with PTool and what firmware I use. Sounds really stange, but even when I return to the official firmware of Panasonic, the framerates are boosted beyong 100 Mbit/s in hightly detailed scenes, so even the fastest SD cards sometimes could not write fast enough. Other things, like 30min restriction, went back to normal after reinstalling the official firmware.

I'm already using PNY class 10 32GB with 100 MB/s and Transcend class 10. MY body has Serial-Number WE9KC001772.

Any suggestions?

Where does the 'extra' data come from when transcoding? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7827/where-does-the-extra-data-come-from-when-transcoding Mon, 19 Aug 2013 14:06:56 +0000 zm15 7827@/talks/discussions I wasn't sure what category this fit in exactly....

This is something I've never quite understood, but have always wondered. Forgive my basic knowledge here, but I've tried to research this without a specific answer as to what is going on.

When I convert from an .MTS file to ProRes422 HQ, the file get's huge. Why is that? Where is that extra data coming from if it's not there to begin with? i.e. higher bitrate. I understand the codec has a standard bitrate it will always maintain, but why do it if the original file bitrate is so much lower?

For example, a stock GH2 mts for me streams at about 22 Mbits/s, I convert it to ProRes422 HQ, that same file is now playing at 216 Mbits/s. - With no discernible image quality difference.

What is going on in the codec that makes the file so huge? Other than workflow issues, why would you want to transcode from MTS? Does converting it to ProRes (or another codec) 'Unpack' the data in a more efficient way?

Why not use something like ProRes422 LT if you're starting from a much lower data rate like a native MTS file provides?

Now I wat to offer my products as download files in .mp4 format.

Now one has to try to find the oprimum bitrate setting, to keep the quality as good as possible for the customer and, on the other hand, keep the files as small as possible, to make the download shorter. I know both contradict each other. The smaller the worse quality etc.

Now what bitrate would you suggest for

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hack and bitrate question https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5599/hack-and-bitrate-question Fri, 28 Dec 2012 08:45:52 +0000 Tatum 5599@/talks/discussions Hi,

Well, I would like to know if someone could help me to know if my hack is working well. I was using this last month the 88Mbps United hack. The first problem : when I check the bitrate for the different video, it's never the same : I can have 38Mbitps, 44, 88... I was using a SDHC card 32Gb 45MB/s class10. I check the bitrate by right click on video and check the details (in Properties) in Windows.

I wanted to try the Flowmo v2.02 hack to test a higher bitrate. And something stable. The installation seems to be OK. I'm using now a 95MB/s SD card Extreme Pro. Well, the bitrate is now really low (38Mbits max).

I'm recording in 24H mode.

Someone could explain me if I'm checking the bitrate in the good way? Have we an other way to check if the hack is working? Why have I all these fluctuations in my recordings?

@rajamalik @thepalalias @Benibube thank you for the comments guys. @cjdincer

rajamalik, @coors thanks for testing the setting(s) guys; rajamalik Congratulations for your little b...

Releasing the setting, after very long time working on it, the name and some info see 1st alinea:

I know it was/is a challenge (AQ4 and Q8 in the same setting) for most detailed and lower compression setting and want everything constant bitrate-style and rajamalik asking for the most detailed one every time but here is the release of the "OBS AQ4-Q8 161M-setting exTReme-KAYSERI A-GraDetail" setting, the setting shows (due to using lower compression in the setting, but I believe so you see more), maybe say high ISO, a little bit more noise/maybe artifacts, I did not used 3rd party matrix, but the goal is to get every bit (in this situation pixel) what GH2 is seeing/recording, out of it and see everything yourself when playing back and in post too, and cbr-style bitrates too; (do the rest/editing in post).

Okay it's logical to say when you have an very detailed and low compression setting, on high ISO you see some more noise/artifact etc. but you get everyhing out of the gh2 I believe. But I believe, if an "matrix master" can make a matrix especially for this or similar setting then we get an setting with some reduced noise/artifacts directly on the sd-card itself. But matrix by the way is a subjective matter therefor it is up to you to judge or not judge things by matrix way but settings way. And I did not used third party matrix for the setting.

But, on the other hand: maybe there will be enthousiat users to get/shot/capture, you name it, this way and do rest in post, I think and believe it is maybe some personal taste and this setting is on paper very good for low detailed scenes or for someone always looking for it or exactly want details and seeing that little bit more.

The setting gives you constant bitrate-style bitrates and for example 720p50 give you around 100Mbit-range bitrates, this is high in comparison with some other gop-1 720p50 settings/ and some of the other gop-1 720p setting are not working reported earlier by others I though. Don't forget 1080iFSH(50) is available too and also to try for slow motion with deinterlacing in post for 1080p50, maybe this setting is better then other 1080i also, who knows. (This is for some of you as a fan of deinterlacing 1080i to 1080p50 in post, instead of 720p50 give a try too.)

Suggestion: Maybe, from scratch, a matrix master or a matrix maker can make a matrix to also temper some noise/artifacts, high ISO etc. especially for this setting, but also this setting is for people who get the most details out of gh2 and loves to do things in post...

Setting itself, "OBS AQ4-Q8 161M-setting exTReme-KAYSERI A-GraDetail":

(for me unbelievable to let the setting work with AQ4 and Q8 in the same setting at the same time, "All to detail and low compression" at a such high setting, especially when you know that settings for some mode influences the other mode, but I've got them work together for:)

  • working (/or say, I tested) for the modes => 1080p24H, 720p50SH, HBR, 1080iFSH(50), 80%24L but, with such high bitrate setting it was not easy to get, all the modes above, working
  • for all the modes I've written above, constant i-frames-style (+ b-frames for 720p50), cibf-style, except for 80%24L though it has high i-frames between around 360KB to max around 780KB, average around 600KB, and constant bitrate-style, cbr-style, for all the modes I've written above too, (including for 80%24L mode)
  • tested with manual lens, (auto-lens check for yourself)
  • there is a time-limit 3:45min but every mode is working for me with my setup (sd card and manual lens), so recording and also in cam playback available for, maybe including but not limited to (does mean other modes such as 720p60 needs testing, test for your country, I tested the PAL), the modes from above
  • sandisk 8GB SDHC 95Mbits/s card

some bitrates I've got during testing, setting for 1080p24 is high to the 150M range, but see others very good ones: - 720p50 100M (for slo-mo see 1080i fsh(50) mode too, for using deinterlacing in post) - 1080i FSH (50i) 100M (especially for people who want 1080p slow motion with deinterlacing) - HBR 100M (I think very good one for hbr) - 80% 24L 100M

1. Get the fastest sd-card wich present at this moment.

2. Make firmware.
In ptool enter this settigs
E1 Quality=200
E1 Table=4
E2 Quality=200
E2 Table=4
E3 Quality=200
E3 Table=4
E4 Quality=200
E4 Table=4

3. Shoot
Of course choose on your camera 720p MJPEG mode.
Then try to shoot, if record time is > 15 sec, that mean it's ok (this is my guess), note what bitrate you have got
Shoot every time same scene!

After, enter this settings (Every Quality setting is higher by 100)
E1 Quality=300
E1 Table=4
E2 Quality=300
E2 Table=4
E3 Quality=300
E3 Table=4
E4 Quality=300
E4 Table=4
Try to shoot, if record time is > 15 sec, it's ok, note what bitrate you have got

Repeat this until the errors start to happen, after you should take last successful settings, and start new tests, but now you should test with litle steps, let plus every Quality settings in every step by 10, for exemple:
You have got successful settings
E1 Quality=600
E1 Table=4
E2 Quality=600
E2 Table=4
E3 Quality=600
E3 Table=4
E4 Quality=600
E4 Table=4
And you further actions:
E1 Quality=610
E1 Table=4
E2 Quality=610
E2 Table=4
E3 Quality=610
E3 Table=4
E4 Quality=610
E4 Table=4
Do it untill the errors start to happen

Shoot every time same scene!]]>

I only have typical cards, class-10 (Transcend, real speed - 16Mbyte to write and 16Mbyte to read). I almost do not do postproductions, but only store the original recorded video, as it is. Can you recommend the best settings to PTools? :

  1. 720p/50fps c B-Frames with bitrate up to 34Mpbs with the best quality.

  2. 1080p/24fps with the best possible quality with two options - 24Mbps (24L) and 34Mbps (24H)

  3. 1080p/25fps with the best possible quality with bitrate up to 34Mbps (HBR)

  4. 1080p/30fps = 1080p/24fps on the quality of each frame, but just with more frame rate and bit rate - up to 34Mpbs(HBR).

I tried switch to B-Frames in 720p, but always have error messages for bitrate limit exceeded (I set max bitrate to 34Mbps). Although the recording with bitrate up 36Mpbs with a 1080p/24 error does not happen.

What hacked bitrate does "High Bit Rate" (HBR) adopt? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2648/what-hacked-bitrate-does-high-bit-rate-hbr-adopt Wed, 21 Mar 2012 19:25:03 +0000 dualreality 2648@/talks/discussions This is my first post so I'd like to first thank the Personal View team for such a tremendous resource. I bought a GH2 in January and have been blown away by its capabilities.

I have been playing with various hacks and have a question regarding the High Bit Rate mode (HBR). If I apply a firmware hack, what bit rate does the HBR adhere to? For example, in the Driftwood AQuamotion v2 .ini file, there is the following information:

Video Bitrate 24H=100000000 Video Bitrate 24L=88000000 Video Bitrate FSH/SH=68000000 Video Bitrate FH/H=56000000

But "HBR" isn't in there. Does HBR adopt one of the above bit rates instead? If so, which one exactly?

I'm using a European model GH2 (PAL), I don't know if that should make any difference to my question.

Many thanks.

GH2: big loss of bitrate after 3.64 update https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2353/gh2-big-loss-of-bitrate-after-3.64-update Tue, 21 Feb 2012 14:15:34 +0000 wildlark 2353@/talks/discussions Newbie here again. Followed all the instructions for updating firmware 1.1 and 3.64 to the letter. Then I shot some cinema 24H footage which all looked fine but showed 11 mbps - instead of 44 mbps in the 3.64 update checked box. (Did not check any other boxes) So instead of doubling my bitrate, it was halved.

I tried several times with different exposures and lenses, same result. So then I did a clean reinstall of firmware 1.0, same problem, likewise with firmware 1.11 and finally back to 3.64 with one check box marked against AVCHD for increase bit rate to 44. I went carefully through the entire process twice with all the firmwares, uninstalling and reinstalling so cannot figure out what happened.

I note that both 24H and 24L in cinema mode came out the same - 10-11 mbps. (Should be respectively 24 and 17 according to the manual.) On the last try after the second reinstall I got 15 mbps on cinema 24H and 12 mbps on HBR mode. The camera is a week old, working fine, the footage looks OK, so is there something I am missing with the camera settings or interpretation of the data?

I noted in another post somewhere here (cannot find it now) that someone else had a similar problem but managed to retrieve the bitrate after reverting to firmware 1.0. I am not sure if they did that working with V1.0 and 3.64 or just reverted to the factory settings of V1.0.

What should I do? Thanks in advance.

Editing Codec : Prores/DNxHD/Aquamotion/seaQuake/etc. https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2098/editing-codec-proresdnxhdaquamotionseaquakeetc. Tue, 24 Jan 2012 00:35:40 +0000 Nityananda_SCSMath 2098@/talks/discussions I would like this thread to be a discussion of what is the appropriate required "flavor" or bitrate of an editing codec for a certain hack.

For instance, I am recording using the 100Mbps Aquamotion v2 hack, and I want to transcode to normal Prores 422, which is about 115Mbps for 1080p24. I don't want to transcode to HQ (220Mbps) or 4444 (330Mbps) if I don't have to. But am I losing quality? How much? I would rather have my file sizes be nearly half and have 98% of the quality of the hack, but I wouldn't make that sacrifice if I'm only getting 70% of the hack's capable quality. So some input from those who are more knowledgeable would be good.

Is this correct?

Aquamotion v2 100Mbps -> Appropriate Editing Codec -> Prores 422 or DNxHD 145

seaQuake 176mbs -> Appropriate Editing Codec -> Prores 422 HQ or DNxHD 220

Of course this thread should be an open discussion of different hacks and editing codecs not just relevant to me as the "Original Poster," I'm just starting things off.

Hacked GH1 - AVCHD transcoding...wont go above 15mbps https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1122/hacked-gh1-avchd-transcoding...wont-go-above-15mbps Thu, 06 Oct 2011 20:54:59 +0000 Ecoleica 1122@/talks/discussions How to get higher bit-rates and true 24fps with Gh13? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1402/how-to-get-higher-bit-rates-and-true-24fps-with-gh13- Wed, 09 Nov 2011 17:57:42 +0000 kronstadt 1402@/talks/discussions
(long time reader, first time joiner/poster)

So I came back from London with 4 hours worth of lens-test footage - mostly night-shoots and hand-held. This was my first shoot with my Gh1 re-born as a Gh13 after I applied the hack with LPowell 100mbps settings, with Overall Bitrate set at 108,000,000. I shot everything in FHD AVCHD, on 32GB class 10 Transcend cards. As far as I can remember, my Gh13 never crashed or frose.

The footage looks great, but it's not as "mind-blowing" as I expected.

Once I came back I got a software called Mediainfo (free from SourceForge), so as to check bit-rates, fps etc (great simple software). And I was pretty upset to find out that most of my videos are in 25fps (NOT 24fps or 23.976fps as I expected) and have bit-rates ranging from 15 to 20mbps. Is this normal??? I mean where's the 100mbps? or at least the 50mbps? Am I missing something?

So , how can I make those videos be capturing in TRUE 24fps with bit-rates as high as 40, 50, or even 86mbps, or even higher???

Many Thanks in advance for your advices and suggestions.

Anyway, just something to keep in mind! I'm off to test bitrates and drive configurations to find out what's best suited to my post-production setup.]]>
