I'll attach an image of what my sensor is showing me in live view. Have you ever seen anything like this before? My mother-in-law dropped the camera, and now it has this weird banding effect. I'm not sure it it was there before but more subtle, as I applied the hack after the drop, but rolling to a stock firmware doesn't help, so I don't think it's that. Help!

Production tips to get rid of artifacts and digital limitations https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6901/production-tips-to-get-rid-of-artifacts-and-digital-limitations Tue, 07 May 2013 11:34:05 +0000 lolo 6901@/talks/discussions Hello!, i want to start a thread for everyone to add their tips and tricks to get rid of the commpression issues, if someones add his own, please use the same format, here are mine:

Banding:

example: i´m shooting a sunset with the gh2

  1. set the proyect settings to 16bit
  2. double the layer
  3. on the upper layer isolate the banding area, can be rotoscoped, or keyed out, in this example is easy to key out the sky as it is only made of one color
  4. on the bottom layer use a blur effect

--pros: it truly gets rids of the banding

--cons: is useful only for soft areas with not much detail, but then again, banding almost always appears only on these areas

Dynamic range:

example: im shooting an actor on a bedroom, and a window is in frame, therefore i´m in backlight against the sun, so either i blow up the window or i underexpose for the actor, unless i increase the light of the bedroom, i have to choose, here is a trick:

  1. Camera must be stationary (over a tripod)
  2. Shoot the scene, exposing for the talent
  3. Without changing the frame, shoot again with no actor, exposing for the window
  4. Mix both shoots on the editor, rotoscoping the window against the actor.

--pros: increases the dynamic range of a camera, gives more information for color grading

--cons: the camera shouldnt move, and rotoscoping is tedious

GH2 Banding https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/202/gh2-banding Thu, 09 Jun 2011 06:02:07 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 202@/talks/discussions Official GH2 "Stalin" hack development topic.]]> Newbie looking for CFL advice https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10846/newbie-looking-for-cfl-advice Sun, 20 Jul 2014 21:31:30 +0000 Brian_Siano 10846@/talks/discussions Here's the background. I did a shoot a few weeks ago, using a GH2 and the Cake patch, to shoot interviews. We set up a lighting rig using three LED panels and umbrella stands. While we were shooting my camera's screen showed a set of green bands running horizontally across the image. This was new to me, but I reasoned that the adjustable LED panels might be causing it-- you know, refresh rates and alla that. So I switched to 100-watt incandescent bulbs for the rest of the shoot.

Well, the footage shot with the LEDs was fine, no green bands. But the 100-watt bulbs weren't as bright. So, it seems to me that I should use more powerful lights, and I'm thinking CFLs equivalent to 200-watt incandescents.

So my question is: what color temperature should I look for? Floods or standard configurations (for use with white-umbrella stands)? Do they make dimmable high-power CFLs, so I can adjust the lighting more delicately? (And if I did this dimming thing, would there be problems like flicker or banding with my GH2?)

Sorry if this has been asked before, but the info I found was in many different threads, and I figured, let's assemble it all in one post/thread.

Nikon D7100 noise banding effect in video https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9565/nikon-d7100-noise-banding-effect-in-video Fri, 07 Feb 2014 06:16:45 +0000 loop_1 9565@/talks/discussions Hi, in this days i used my new D7100 for some tests... good camera, good sharp, all good!

But there is a problem!! :-O

In the attached file you can see a test screenshoot (from a video frame) where in the underexposed areas (like the blue) there are some noise (but not much) and many lines, like small banding... this at 400 iso...

why this? IT's a D7100 problmem? Anyone have this issue?

GH2 Issue Horizontal Brown Lines https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7174/gh2-issue-horizontal-brown-lines Wed, 05 Jun 2013 16:53:48 +0000 tdan84 7174@/talks/discussions Hi People,

Bought the GH2 last week and after an weekend filming and shooting photos, i noticed today strange Banding on the LCD and on the viewfinder. Most visible with very fast shutterspeed.

Is this a damaged LCD or damaged sensor? Anyone with the same problem?

Problem is visible with stock 1.1 firmware and also when i hack.

Thanks in advance.

Banding - Avoiding It and Fixing It - Current Consensus https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5745/banding-avoiding-it-and-fixing-it-current-consensus Fri, 11 Jan 2013 02:00:50 +0000 matt_gh2 5745@/talks/discussions I've had some banding issues on my GH2- not a lot, but sometimes, so I was searching through the site to try to figure out how to avoid it (or minimize it) when shooting, and also how to fix it in post if you need to. I was hoping to see if anyone basically knew the definitive current consensus, but hadn't seen too much on how to avoid it. I also saw a few proposed solutions (convert to 5DtoRGB, apply dithering/noise, add a second layer that's blurred), but there was some debate, so was hoping to see what people have found works for them when it comes to avoiding and fixing banding. Thank you

GH3 lines or banding at high ISOs (3200 6400) in video mode https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5738/gh3-lines-or-banding-at-high-isos-3200-6400-in-video-mode Thu, 10 Jan 2013 12:04:49 +0000 djhessler 5738@/talks/discussions I'm curious if anyone is getting lines or banding in high ISO's with the GH3 in video mode, I get horrible lines/banding that honestly make my gh2 more pleasing to the eye. I have attached a file with file of 6400 ISO to make my point, of course I would probably never use 6400 but even at 3200 the lines are noticeable, any one else have this issue?

UPDATE: lol I always end up finding answers to my problems, well as it turns out, I was testing the high iso feature with a 14-42 X lens and that was causing those lines, I slapped a manual lens with no IS and no electronics and now I see how clean my 3200 setting is, so people watch out with those Panny lenses :-)

Strange Flickering/Banding? Issue https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5682/strange-flickeringbanding-issue Sun, 06 Jan 2013 22:59:18 +0000 bostonmike 5682@/talks/discussions I've heard of a banding issue with the GH2, but what is really is odd is that I've had this camera for over a year and used it in every lighting situation. I have never experienced this until last week. Sure I've had a little noise when there isn't proper light, but never anything like this.

You can see it really bad on the statue image, but you can also see it on the parking meter image if you look towards the center of the video...and this was lit well. The odd thing is I took a similar video of the statue, but zoomed out a little and no bad effect. I also took some shots the same night in similar conditions as the statue shot and they came out a little noisy, but no unsightly bands or flickering strips like this. These effects are happening with different lenses, so its not a lens issue.

The only two things I've been doing differently lately is using a B+W ND .6 filter (had it on during the parking meter video) and after all this time I just discovered the Tele EX button (which according to the manual does not degrade image quality). I can't image the ND .6 filter would push the camera to produce this banding, especially in broad daylight.

I have used the Terraquake hack since I bought this camera and its been so good that I haven't really had any need to change it. I never mess around with the ISO. I always light well enough to keep it down to 160, or switch to a faster lens when needed instead of raising ISO.

Oh well, going to head back to the same spot in a few days and take video without ND filter and with Tele EX off and see if this is causing the issue. Wasn't sure if anyone else was familiar with this.

GH2 at iso 12800 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4171/gh2-at-iso-12800 Tue, 07 Aug 2012 14:51:02 +0000 ShineHunter 4171@/talks/discussions I'm new to all this, but I'm a quick learner. I'm seeing large blue and smaller darker band when at iso 12800. Also the noise seems a lot more than normal for this camera. You guy's know your stuff, is this all normal or do I have a faulty GH2?

How to provoke banding? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3231/how-to-provoke-banding Wed, 16 May 2012 19:43:13 +0000 karl 3231@/talks/discussions This may sound like a crazy question, but this evening I tried to compare low light results of GOLGOP3 and M6 Sports settings, and one aspect I wanted to test was the "banding issue" (after having read some postings on this phenomenon and watching a recent EOSHD video showing the "banding" problem).

Now the strange thing is that I failed to reproduce the issue, even when voluntarily shooting very low light scenes at ISO 12800. There was, of course, lots of noise in the clips, but no clearly recognizeable banding.

So I wonder: What did I do "wrong" that I could not reproduce the banding issue? What settings can you "recommend" to reproduce the banding issue?

Horizontal and vertical lines on GH2 footage - problem https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2424/horizontal-and-vertical-lines-on-gh2-footage-problem Mon, 27 Feb 2012 19:29:55 +0000 katig 2424@/talks/discussions I have a problem with new GH2 (model WE1G) - fixed horizontal lines while tilting and vertical lines while panning. I am aware of famous banding issue but this is not it. I am also aware of gradient banding, also not a problem. As you can see on my footage (GH2 WE1G, CANON nFD 1.4@2.8, HBR25p, ISO 160, 1/50, ORION DRIFTWOOD av.95Mbps, LED 5600) when I start tilting on one-color surface (white wall for example), these dark horizontal lines appear. It is easier to spot it when out of focus. Also, not so pronounced, but when I start panning you can see vertical lines (specially at the and of clip on out of focus table footage). I tried every possible setting combination (f-stop, iso, shutter speed, film modes, other patches (sanity, flowmotion, quantum x2...), lights (yes, it is visible at daytime on the sky), other lenses (canon fd 24, 35-105 and panasonic 14-42). To make a long story short, in every situation when filming uniform mid and high tones without special detail (walls, sky and similar) these lines appear - it almost feels like dirty lens but I checked that too. Maybe they even exist in more detailed footage too (like trees, stones, water...) but because of too much detail I cant see it. This is a serious problem for me. In a short period I am about to shoot a commercial and I planned to use the gh2 as main camera (instead of mark II, and because of all those great footage I see from other gh2 owners), but now I am not sure. Did someone else have same problem? Any advice?

p.s. yes that ballantine's glass is empty but I'm not seeing things. Yet :)

GH2 Color Banding Bashing https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1084/-gh2-color-banding-bashing Sat, 01 Oct 2011 09:52:54 +0000 Maxwell77 1084@/talks/discussions I had always problems with color banding with my GH2. For this reason I tried the hack. I am very disappointed that the color banding problem is still alive. I cannot use my GH2 for professional work. No way...The color banding in blue clear skies is awful. The hack was my last chance to keep this camera... The higher bitrate do not change this behaviour. Perhaps it is not possible to solve this issue. Probably the 8 Bit is the problem. Did anyone found a solution?
Best regards, Maxwell]]>

Noise. NOISE. Bad word, right? Most people hate digital noise and will do anything to avoid or remove it from their footage. The first, and seemingly most obvious choice, is to shoot at a lower ISO which tends to exhibit less noise in most digital cameras. However, as is with everything in life–generally, there are trade-offs… some you may not initially notice lurking around in your footage until you get to post.

One of these threats is Noise’s equally ugly older sister: Banding.

When the D90 and GH1 first dropped, one of the stand-out features was being able to utilize a various array of ISO increments to adjust for lighting situations. In ultra lowlight, some are brave enough to jam the ISO up to 3200. In broad daylight? Right on down to 160 (or 100 on Canon DSLRs). Unfortunately, the cleanliness and smoothness of a low ISO setting opens a gateway for banding to creep into your image.
