I want to hear your experience on collaborative editing. Are you now, or have you ever been part of any kind of collaborative editing environment? If so, what technical solutions have you been working with? I want to hear your experiences.

I personally have been a user of Avid interplay for about 10 years now.

Avid / Edius GH2 workflow 25pfs wraped in 50i (also works for Canon and other formats) https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9750/avid-edius-gh2-workflow-25pfs-wraped-in-50i-also-works-for-canon-and-other-formats Sat, 01 Mar 2014 12:43:50 +0000 fm4fan 9750@/talks/discussions Hi,

I just post a few workflow ideas for Avid and also Edius to get around some common problems.

Some cameras (eg GH2) wrap the 1080/25p in a 50i (25fps) container or do other weird stuff like show you a very strange framerate.

Workflow Avid MC6 or higher:

  • create a 1080/25p project
  • AMA link your card (don't rename your files otherwise your AMA Link doesn't work)
  • In your bin enable the "field motion" column/heading and with a click on the line(s) Avid interprets the file(s) as progressive or progressive strobe.
  • Transcode to Avid DNX and hope for the best because Avid struggles a lot with GH2 files (Avid is king with pro files but h.264 isn't pro for him).
  • When you run into transcode troubles you have to transcode the files that didn't work with a 3rd party program like usually Squared5 (doesn't like my GH2 files too), so like Adobe media encoder.

if you have files with weird frame rates

  • Open the Console (Under Tools) and type eg. "SetAMAQTForcedFrameRate true 25.00" and hit enter
  • some message appears and your linked AMA's are now 25fps (or whatever you typed in)
  • you have to type in the commando every time you start your Avid (doesn't remember it)
  • to stop type "SetAMAQTForcedFrameRate false 0"

If you have different framerates / resolutions you can mix and match them in Avid

  • work in another project on a different framerate / resolution
  • open your main project
  • import the bin(s) from the other project(s)
  • Avid will handle everything

And because I'm on field in the middle of nowhere with a small laptop I take this approach to check my files, make a rough cut or transcribe an interview.

Workflow Edius: Basically you don't have to think about anything

  • drag in whatever you like
  • change some files to another field motion
  • mix other framerates/formats,...

I don't love Edius, but you have to love some features of it like working with everything native on a small laptop or ...

hope this helps ciao, Hans-Peter

Edit: Rewrap DNxHD MXF files to Quicktime files solved via firmware update. New problem now tho. https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2216/edit-rewrap-dnxhd-mxf-files-to-quicktime-files-solved-via-firmware-update.-new-problem-now-tho. Tue, 07 Feb 2012 14:20:19 +0000 Brian202020 2216@/talks/discussions The new Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 records DNxHD files in the MXF wrapper. These files can only be read by Avid's NLE. If these file could be rewrapped into a quicktime wrapper then other NLE's would be able to read the files. Many people on many forums are trying to find a solution to this. I want to start this thread here to get more people joining the cause. The Hyperdeck Shuttle 2 is a great buy at an amazing price, and if we could get the files rewrapped or transcoded cheaply it would be huge.

Has anyone done this successfully? Or at least have any good idea's on how to do this?

Fusion for Grading https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5668/fusion-for-grading Sat, 05 Jan 2013 08:05:46 +0000 clyde_t 5668@/talks/discussions Now that connection offers easy access to the Eyeon Fusion toolset using Avid as a host app, has anyone tried grading with it? i did a little bit. i know the Fusion toolset well and it seems like a decent solution. just wondering what others think about this. i know a lot of people don't own Fusion because AE is so affordable in comparison, but I have used it for years and love it.

Avid's Scriptsync tool https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2827/avids-scriptsync-tool Tue, 10 Apr 2012 19:21:19 +0000 GOODEMPIRE 2827@/talks/discussions I've just discovered how handy it is for editing long form. Do you guys know if there is anything similar as an add-on for FCP or CS5? It looks like a good reason to switch. Although I'm totally in love with Premiere. Check this:

DaVinci Resolve 8.1.1 Lite, DNxHD and GH-2 footage https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1492/davinci-resolve-8.1.1-lite-dnxhd-and-gh-2-footage Fri, 18 Nov 2011 21:05:56 +0000 disneytoy 1492@/talks/discussions As of yesterday the main handicaps of the lite version were the limit to 2 nodes. This prevented some very essential corrections requiring 3+ notes for tracking or power windows. But now Black Magic has lifted that limitation! So now unlimited nodes, great use of CUDA acceleration. More importantly for us Windows users, DNxHD codec use to require a $500 license. But now is FREE! The fact ProRes as a writing codec is not available to us PC users, the free Avid DNxHD codec becomes an excellent alternative.

With finalcut X loosing its luster with the current upgrade, and the highly touted Resolve coming to Windows, us PC users have much less reason for MAC envy. I do have a Mac I can try Resolve 8.1.1 on at the moment but that computer isn't part of my editing workflow.

Particularly in light of high bit-rate GOP1 hacks such as Driftwood, I'd like to hear back regarding other's workflows getting their MTS files through a Resolve grading and out. I've done some transcoding tests with 5DtoRGB which supports output in 3 flavors of DNxHD. I believe it writes a .mov file. I'm not sure but I think Resolve wants an Avid MXF wrapper. Maybe someone can report back on that. Also, any other workflows to bring our MTS files into Resolve.

For now I will leave a couple links to some good tutorials to get you started. The interface is a bit non-intuitive. But, if you follow along these should get you going.

Best Mac Cross Conversion Software for 720P to 1080P https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1897/best-mac-cross-conversion-software-for-720p-to-1080p Sun, 01 Jan 2012 17:43:11 +0000 bigtuna 1897@/talks/discussions
I am looking for the best Mac Cross Conversion Software for 720P to 1080P. I shoot 1080P on the 5DMKII and want to use my hacked GH2 for slomo at 720P. I need to deliver the highest quality 1080P master that I can. What is the best method for cross converting the 720P material to 1080P ?

I have tried transcoding to ProRes 422 720P and then working with this in Avid Media Composer in a 1080P project, final results are not great this way. I have also tried converting the 720P material to 1080P ProRes - the results are not so great either.

Getting an excellent 720P final master, but what is the best way of working with the 720P and 1080P material to get the highest quality 1080P final master file ?

Many thanks indeed !]]>
