4K and UltraHD Stuff, Cinemas, Camcorders, TVs https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3741/4k-and-ultrahd-stuff-cinemas-camcorders-tvs Sat, 30 Jun 2012 20:40:35 +0000 Roberto 3741@/talks/discussions When a local cinema replaced their film projectors with only 2K instead of 4K, I was disappointed. Sony explains why.

Picture Height: the measure of viewing distance

image

When the standard definition television system was first launched in North America, engineers assumed that viewers would want to sit at a sufficient distance for the individual scanning lines that comprise the picture to blend into a visually seamless whole. In the days before pixels, these engineers figured on 60 horizontal scanning lines per degree. From this, they derived a standard viewing distance of 7.15 Picture Heights (PH). Studies by Bernard Lechner of RCA in the US and Richard Jackson at Philips Laboratories in Europe determined that actual viewing distance for standard definition TV is around 10 feet (3 meters).8 The screen size that corresponds to 7.15 Picture Heights at this distance is 28 inches diagonal. This roughly matches the larger CRT sizes of the standard definition era.

Movie theater design has been influenced by similar calculations. In the 1940s, the Society of Motion-Picture Engineers (SMPE) made a recommendation called the 2-6 rule.9 It proposed that theater auditoriums be designed with the nearest seats at two times picture width and the farthest at six times picture width. Using the Academy Aperture screen shape of the time, that translates to a minimum viewing distance of 2.67 Picture Heights.

When high definition television was first proposed, the design goal was to equal the performance of movie theaters. This dictated an increase in TV resolution sufficient to create the illusion of a seamless image at roughly three Picture Heights.10 (The actual figure is 3.16 Picture Heights.) This similarity to the 2.67 specification of old movie theaters is not a coincidence. It is by design.

Since the 1940s, just about everything in movie theaters has been transformed, including auditorium design. Through the 1990s, new theater designs moved to progressively wider-angle projection lenses, which suggests that seats became progressively closer to the screen.11 By 1994, viewing distances that had once been considered the minimum were now close to the maximum. The renamed Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) issued Engineering Guideline EG 18- 1994, which recommended that the screen subtend a minimum horizontal angle of 30 degrees for viewers in the back of the room. This corresponds to a distance of 3.45 Picture Heights (using the5 contemporary picture proportions of 1.85:1). EG 18-1994 proved to be a snapshot of best practices at the end of the era of sloped-floor auditoriums.

It was withdrawn in 2003 as inappropriate for the new era of stadium seating auditoriums, which bring the audience even closer. In stadium seating, the back of the house is about three Picture Heights from the screen while the closest seats are less than one Picture Height away.

I'm saving up for a G85, and with that I'm looking for a new 4k screen.

The screen is going to be used as a monitor for my pc. I like to have 40" +.

My priorities are:

  1. viewing angle
  2. colour accuracy
  3. NON flickering when set to low brightness
  4. latency
  5. HDR ready

My budget hovers about € 700.

Any recommendations?

GH4 laptop Requirements? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9956/gh4-laptop-requirements Mon, 24 Mar 2014 12:58:47 +0000 mpgxsvcd 9956@/talks/discussions Let me start this off with saying that I know a desktop is a better option for this. However, I absolutely must have a laptop to do my editing on the road while it is happening. I have a matter of hours to edit this footage and not days, weeks, or months.

Also I am a PC guy. I understand that some people use Macs. That just isn’t for me. I want a fast PC laptop that can handle editing the GH4 4K video for less than $2000.

I definitely need to upgrade my laptop before my GH4 gets here. However, I am not sure what specs will help me and what will just cost me more money and not really give me any benefit.

Obviously a 4K screen would be ideal to match the footage. However, is that really necessary? With a 15-19 inch screen is that extra resolution going to matter at all? How much are the 4K laptops going to be? Is 1920x1080 going to look about the same as 4K on this size screen? Do any of you have a 4K laptop already?

What Grpahics processor? I have always been an ATI person before. However, Nvidia makes great video cards as well. What is the minimum ATI and Nvidia card that will work for editing 4k footage? Is the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770M enough?

Processor. It is confusing about what processor are fast and what processors are just pretending to be fast. My understanding is that I7 doesn’t always mean what you think it means. So what processor should I be looking for? Is the i7-4700MQ the best processor to get right now?

Operating system. I really hate Windows 8. I have a laptop with it and I hate it. I really don’t want to get another one with Windows 8. Will Windows 7 hold me back in any way? I have a lot of astrophotography programs that I also run and those won’t work properly under Windows 8.

Ram. I know the more you have the better. However, will you see a difference between 16 Gigs and 32 Gigs? There is usually a significant price difference between those. Is 16GB PC3-12800 DDR3L SDRAM enough?

Hard Drive. I am using USB 3.0 external drives right now. I need a lot more than 250 or even 500 GB so solid state is not really an option for me. Is solid state that much faster than USB 3.0?

Here is one laptop I am looking at. It is an Alienware 17.3" Laptop - 16GB Memory with the components I listed above. Are there better options out there for less than $1850?

Ninja Warrior or Climbing? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16102/ninja-warrior-or-climbing Fri, 25 Nov 2016 07:16:39 +0000 mpgxsvcd 16102@/talks/discussions Some people might remember the climbing videos I posted in the past. I haven't done one of those in a long time. The kids are all still just as into climbing but I just didn't have the time anymore to put into making the videos.

However, one of the parents of a climber decided to build a pretty spectacular American Ninja Warrior course in his backyard. Here is what opening day looked like.

This was filmed with the GoPro Hero5 Black and the Panasonic LX100. Most of it is UHD/4K @ 30 FPS or 2.7k @ 60 FPS. However, some clips were 1080p @ 120 FPS converted to UHD/4K @ 60 FPS. There is one 720p @ 240 FPS clip for the super slow motion. The compression artifacts are terrible but 240 FPS is really cool for slow motion.

If you have any questions about the GoPro 5 please let me know. I know it doesn't look that much better than the Hero4. However, it still is a fabulous camera for what it is designed to do and its price is actually quite reasonable.

There is no color grading done at all. This is footage straight out of the camera pieced together and sometimes slowed down or sped up. No other changes except for just a little general sharpening throughout the video. This is the first 4K @ 60 FPS video I have done for youtube. I don't have the ability to make HDR videos yet. However, I am really impressed with the true HDR videos youtube now has.

Question for timelapse photographers https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16017/question-for-timelapse-photographers Wed, 09 Nov 2016 06:49:16 +0000 MischaB 16017@/talks/discussions Hello everyone,

I'm working on my graduation project, I want to create the following, and I'd like to hear how you think about it;

"A mobile app, with information about how to make the best timelapses, using any technique (1080p, 4k, HDR, stereoscopic 3d etc) with tips and tricks for the settings."

It will not be an app that makes the timelapse, nor will it be an app that tells you exactly which settings to use; it should be more of a reference work, a helping hand.

Now I'm trying to use the design thinking method to build this idea, so that's why I need opinions. What do you guys think? Is it worth working on? What do you think should definetely be included or excluded? I'm thinking about an app because I suppose it's nice to have it with you when you're shooting a timelapse, but maybe that's a wrong assumption?

4K HD at 15fps and 2.7K at 30fps is AWESOME for $399.99, and actually outdoes the BMCC resolution in a matchbox.

4K HD at 15fps; 2.7K at 30fps, 25, 24fps; 1440p at 48fps; 1080p at 60fps

Looks like we are in for some awesome footage coming soon! GoPro Cinema 4K is coming pretty fast, just need a few more frames and a little more time!

If Vitaliy manages to hack this baby for the few extra frames, BIG BUCKS! Lovely how GoPro manages to have a small partly useable 4K mode, while the GH3 skips it entirely...

Best way to edit 4K footage to HD output Premiere Pro iMac https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15728/best-way-to-edit-4k-footage-to-hd-output-premiere-pro-imac Wed, 14 Sep 2016 16:33:10 +0000 webarchitect 15728@/talks/discussions Greetings, and thanks to all who contribute here. I learn something almost daily. While I've read posts in several places on this topic, I've not found consensus, but have run into issues. Here's the scenario:

I'm shooting 4K with the GH4 for all the benefits including punch in, pans, etc. Final output is 1080p. Occasionally I'll mix in some HD footage.

The last project I did was 6.5 mins, but much to my surprise was really dragging down my computer. I wonder if some of you with more experience can suggest a better workflow. I'm hoping to avoid buying a new computer for another year, but will do what I must when I can. Here's what I'm working with:

Premiere Pro CC iMac (Retina 5K, 27 inch, Late 2014) 3.5 GHz Intel Core i5 16 GB 1600 MGz DDR3 AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2048 MB

To create a sequence, I've simply dragged the the first 4k clip to the timeline and let Premiere handle the settings accordingly. I edit, then export as HD.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and advice!

4k+ video editing workstation. https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15617/4k-video-editing-workstation. Tue, 30 Aug 2016 11:56:21 +0000 Tommyboy 15617@/talks/discussions The never ending pursuit……………
The goal of this post is to build a custom PC solution that renders 4k+ footage with ease. I want to determine if this solution is more suitable than getting HP Z840 workstation.

In my own experience it is always better to go thru the process of building your own workstation to educate yourself on the latest best practices.

Hence my questions to be asked:

  • Vendor build workstation or custom build one?
  • CPU choice Xeon or I7 (Skylake generation)?
  • DDR 2133 or 2400 registered vs. unregistered memory modules?
  • Video card NVIDIA Quadro M6000 or NVIDIA TITAN X?
  • What about: Thunderbolt 3? *I don’t think Xeon CPU motherboards have the thunderbolt 3 feature.

I know a lot of these things will depend on the amount of money one can spend. However, I’m trying to find the middle ground between the two and see what can get me thru the next 4 years.

Things that I know and want:

  • High performance 4K+ editing workstation (time is money, money you can always make but you can’t get time back).
  • New CPU 12-20 cores (Intel SkyLake) Video (NVidia Pascal) architecture.
  • 64-128 GB of DDR4 memory.
  • USB 3.1 with Thunderbolt 3
  • M.2 SSD based on NVMe Protocol (PCIe, Gen. 3, x4) in Raid 0 for OS boot up and additional SSD in Raid 0 for Media.
  • Asus motherboards are really stable and I have no complains so far.
  • Editing software to be used: Blackmagic Resolve.
  • Backup to NAS storage.

I’m going thru the research phase at this time hence this post to gather all valid points for the next workstation for video editing. If anyone is going thru an upgrade process at this time please share your thought and experience.

Camera Upgrade 4k, Blackmagic, or Not? https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14938/camera-upgrade-4k-blackmagic-or-not Fri, 08 Apr 2016 17:26:43 +0000 AnamatisRmG 14938@/talks/discussions Let me keep this short. I've secured $5000 funding for a camera upgrade. I've been using an FS100 for 3/4 years and have enjoyed low light and 60fps capabilities. I've been freelancing and running my small prod company for the same amount of time and my commercial is reaching new levels, and my clientele is slightly climbing the ladder.

The big question is : Do I need to upgrade to a 4k system to be able to compete next year and the following 3?

If so do I go the Big Ursa route? Or the Ursa Mini 4.6 k. (I may be able to acquire a Big Ursa V1 for $3800)

Either way I'm looking at pairing with an A7s as lowlight isn't a huge muscle with these cameras.

If 4k isn't necessary than I'm looking at an FS700 as over crank is a big component of my work and I maintain low light capabilities.

My main concerns about the Big Ursa are flying it (gimbal, crane, slider, hand held, tripod for that matter)

GH4 and anamorphic https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14688/gh4-and-anamorphic Wed, 02 Mar 2016 12:34:32 +0000 Vpro 14688@/talks/discussions Hi to all !

Once again thanks to the ones that use their brain and take time to create some crazy good things !

I have a question about 4K photo mode.

For those who don't know, it enables to record 1:1; 4:3 and 3:2 image.

Here are the image sizes possible:

  • 4K UHD 16/9
  • 3840x2160
  • 4K Anamorphique 4/3
  • 3328x2496
  • 4K Photo mode in mp4
  • 1:1 2880x2880
  • 3:2 3504x2336

With the combination of an anamorphic lens it allows in 1:1 for example, to shoot in 2x time anamorphic with a 16/9 ratio. (not exactly 16/9, maybe 17/9 or 18/9…)

It is awesome because you can have the benefit of shooting anamorphic without being restricted by the "cinemascope" format. This format is nice but may not be appropriate for all movies and anamorphic also has other great attribute :

  • different bokeh.
  • wider field of view.
  • flares for those who like them.

So you'll tell me what's the problem ????

When you enter this 4K photo mode and want a live output via HDMI you need to have a 422 10bit output feed. This 422 10bit option disable the recording on SD card…

And as the output is via HDMI it can only output 4K…so all the various picture sized written above are downscaled to enter in a 4K size… For exemple the 2880x2880 become 2160x2160 in a 3840x2160 so you get a 4K UHD ratio with a square image on it, and so black recorded on left and right.

If you edit in 1080 HD, this 1:1 ratio recorded by 4K HDMIwith a 2x anamorphic, is used by 100% wide and 50% height… So that's not to bad but a little bit of deception as well.

I've tried this morning with a Atomos Shogun recorder I had a chance to use at a production company.

I really plan to test with a Odyssey 7q+ but I think it will be the same because all those equipment are made to work with standards and limited to 4K…

I don't understand why Panasonic made this limitation and in the same time gives us those possibilities (1:1, 3:2…)… They don't have a higher camera to be canibalized (like Canon with 5D and C300…) and they don't sell 4K portable recorders…

SO MY QUESTION IS : May GH4 be hacked ?

to allow 8bit HDMI output with 4K photo mode ?

or to allow recording 10bit 422 on SD ?

I understand the second option may be limited by hardware of the GH4 or by the speed of the SD cards.

The benefit would be 1- having the choice of the image ratio ! 2- having the ability to desqueeze image that I think is a necessity to have a good framing for the operator or other people of the staff/ client

Am I dreaming ? Maybe…but so sad to have the perfect tool for anamorphic and having to use it in a crazy/dangerous/not precise way !

And I don't believe the feature will be unlocked in GH5…

THX for reading! Best .V

My homage to the 80'ies 3 min up-tempo synth-pop songs https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14547/my-homage-to-the-80ies-3-min-up-tempo-synth-pop-songs Sun, 07 Feb 2016 03:59:28 +0000 elkanah77 14547@/talks/discussions Tried to capture the essence of the fun, up-tempo and a bit melancholy synth-pop of the 80'ies. The decade I loved so much. I made this with a lot of old gear for the music Rolands, Korgs and Yamaha DX of course. Shot on the Sony A6000 with the kit-lens and the 55mm 1.8. Some shots are with the iPhone 6 and a 4K hack to get some movement going.

Very interesting in the following:

Sharpness:

Moire:

Cadence:

Microsoft - New World of Work - Shot on GH4 https://personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14249/microsoft-new-world-of-work-shot-on-gh4 Sat, 19 Dec 2015 11:58:09 +0000 Chris74 14249@/talks/discussions I wrote, produced and directed an advert for Microsoft Finland some months back. My DoP decided to use a GH4. I was first sceptic but after some tests with CineD in 4k on a Atomos Shogun, he convinced me that it was up to the task. All in all, I would say this is a very capable camera for professional production.
